Martin’s new DS is the MY2020 SE with the D180 engine (180bhp diesel MHEV, automatic transmission) and is only 4 months old with 1,300 miles on the clock.
.
Martin has been tempted to change his FL2 to DS for quite a while (maybe then to a new Defender a few years down the line). He had already driven a few of the late DS’ as a courtesy car and they fit all his specification much like his FL2…
.
“I liked the looks and had always been very impressed with them for the increased equipment level compared to the FL2, but had found the ride rather firm. Test driving the MY2020 showed just what an improvement Land Rover had made.”
.
Owning the DS for less than a week, Martin has already ventured onto a couple of dirt tracks and his initial impressions are that it’s just a capable as the FL2… so off to a very good start. In comparison to the FL2, the big difference is the reduction in body roll and the improved turn-in, with less tendency too understeer.
.
“I’d always thought the ride quality of the FL2 was amazing, just gliding over potholes unnoticed but the DS seems even smoother!”
.
Of course, as a newer vehicle, the DS comes with significantly more gadgets and driver aids to the FL2 and for Martin, he feels it may take him a bit of time to get everything set up just right and understand what they can do. Right now he says it has to be the ClearView mirror, something he didn’t think he would use, has never been out of function and gives a “wider and uncluttered view of behind”.
A feature that Marin had doubts about was the remote app for smart-phones, but it has alreadyproved it's worth on several of icy mornings to fire up the engine from the comfort of his home. 🌨

Martin (@life_in_cumbria ) has taken another step further into the Land Rover timeline, from his late FL2 to the purchase of a Disco Sport MY2020 SE (D180 engine). Since the DS took over from Freelander in 2014, I’ve been wanting to hear from owners what they think of the two in comparison. After all, it at big boots to fill.
The first part of this post is going to focus primarily on how Martin started with the FL2…
.
Martin has loved Land Rovers for as long as he can remember. The moment he got sports cars out of his system, he went straight for a Defender 90, kitting it out with bigger mud terrain tyres, snorkel, expedition roof rack and spotlights, chequer plate and some underbody amour. In Cumbria, this seems the perfect fit for those country lanes. However, with regular and long trips back South, Martin was soon after something more comfortable, that’s where the FL2 came in. For Martin, the FL2 still felt like a proper Land Rover and was well suited to his criteria. It was the GS model with SD4 engine (190BHP version) in Santorini Black.
.
“Having a car that could go anywhere was still important to me, but it needed to be able to get me around in comfort, whilst having room for the dogs or all my camera gear.”
The Freelander 2 took Martin and his family on many holidays all over the UK. Along the way, it took in some byways, one favourite being at Elan Valley (in the photo).
With only a few minor setbacks such as ground clearance, Martin’s FL2 did not fail wherever he took it.
.
I asked Martin if he’d recommend the FL2...
“If you want the Land Rover capability, but the downsides of Defender ownership aren’t for you, definitely take a look at the Freelander 2!”
