  • In my “real” life, I teach communication classes to college students. My passion for teaching and favorite topic is Perception and most importantly, critical thinking. I tell my students if they can truly grasp these ideas then it will change their lives. So I’ve decided to teach these skills through Instagram as well, just for fun. 😉 this is a photo of a flower that I took while walking my dog. How big do you think the flower is? Compare it to something, ie a penny, a tennis ball, a frisbee, etc. I’ll give you the answer in another post. Now, how does this apply to critical thinking? Let me tell you a story. I was working last night, at the airport, and there was a very rude guy who really hurt my feelings and my heart. I was so mad after helping him and being degraded and put down. He was such a jerk!! I talked it out to coworkers and friends for the last part of my shift, then I can home and was up until way too late because I was still upset about it. But then I thought- Kim, you teach this stuff, now figure it out. So I got out my journal and starting working through it. “He was a jerk!” I wrote using strong adjectives. Then I asked myself, “Is that true? Is he a jerk?” Well I don’t know.... he sure was acting like one. But the reality is- he may be a nice guy for all I know. Maybe he was upset about their crying baby, or maybe they were on their way to a funeral or to visit a sick friend or family member. Maybe he’s dealing with a million little things and he feels like his world is falling apart. I’ll never know. The reality is that he was rude and he took it out on me. That’s a fact. That doesn’t mean that how he described me is the truth. In fact, his opinions of me have zero reality in who I am as a person. And that, my friends, is an example of thinking critically. Looking at it from another perspective. Consider the source. Look at facts. What’s the truth? This concludes Kim’s Critical Thinking Tuesday haha. Have you had an experience like that which put you in a bad mood or a funk? #desert #criticalthinking #communicationskills #kimscriticalthinkingtuesday #flowers #arizona #walk #jerk #grumpy #differentperspective #communication
