  • I've owned this @alicelouisewaters cookbook for so long and I love absolutely everything about it. She's actually one of the reasons why I switched careers and followed my love of food – real, whole simply grown food. Her work with @edibleschoolyard is amazing and I think everyone should find ways in their communities to help give kids access to fresh foods. Children LOVE to garden, and even if it's a tiny pot of mint on a window sill, this can foster a love of food and encourage responsibility and empathy that goes far beyond the plate. 💚 #roundtable 📸: @thecharbonneautwins

What are your thoughts on counting calories? #keepingupwiththedietitian

I saw an IG post where chia seeds were grouped with a few other ‘healthy’ foods (e.g. granola, peanut butter). While the emphasis was to be placed on portion control and calories, I felt that grouping chia seeds into this category was misleading. Here are my concerns:
👉🏼2tbsp chia seeds = 120kcals, but how much of that is actually leaving your body undigested (i.e. 10g fibre/2tbsp)?
👉🏼2tbsp chia seeds are a lot to consume in one sitting = +++ fullness —> may actually decrease overall hunger/oral intakes.

✖️Category wise 2 tbsp chia seeds, which is now 80kcal, 10g fibre and no sugar, would not be the same as 1/4c granola (i.e 200kcal, 5g sugar, 2g fibre - may vary).

➕I don’t calorie count, but I do pay attention to portion sizes and the source of calories. The example above was a great reminder that we need to look at the whole food and its’ nutrients, and not just calories.

  • When starting to introduce foods to your baby, it’s important to remember their MAIN source of nutrition should come from your breast milk or formula...NOT the food they are learning to eat! I reassure parents this all the time because #BLW can be tricky and stressful! Some kids catch on great, and others (even children of dietitians!) struggle a bit.

An all too common question I get in the clinic is, how do I know if my baby is getting enough milk?? 🤱🏼

If you’re breastfeeding, good indicators your baby is drinking enough are the length of feeding (about 20 minutes is a solid session), feeding from both breasts,  and feeling for a softness in the breast once the feeding is done. Your baby should also be meeting developmental milestones, gaining weight and growing according to standards, and should have plenty of wet and dirty diapers in a day.

  • Stop ignoring your cravings👏🏼 It’s your body trying to tell you something!

You wouldn’t ignore the urge to use the restroom, or the urge to drink water when thirsty on a hot day. So why do we discredit our food cravings?
•
We usually write them off as being too bad for us or a result of us being addicted to sugar (eye roll🙄). But the reality is it’s just another way your body communicates what it needs. If you find you always crave things like desserts, sweets, or carby foods then that’s probably a sign you need to incorporate more of them into your meals! And here’s the kicker- when we regularly eat those “bad foods”, we crave them less.
•
Sometimes a craving doesn’t necessarily fill a gap in nutrition. Sometimes it’s purely for pleasure. Vitamin P (pleasure) is equally as important in our diets as getting enough real vitamins!
•
Your body wants you to eat a balanced and varied diet. It wants you to get all the nutrients it needs. Listening to a craving isn’t “giving in”. It’s respecting your body.

▪️Despite the fact that they come in a package, there are many options that are made with whole food ingredients that make life SO. MUCH. EASIER. Take it from me: You don't need to chop, puree, blend, bake, or roast everything yourself in order to lose weight or enjoy a healthy lifestyle. ⁣⠀
.⁣⠀
▪️Hummus is one of my all-time favorite convenience items! There are so many ways I enjoy hummus, but here are some of my regular go-tos:⁣⠀
✔️Doctored up with extra EVOO and seasonings (try cumin and/or red pepper flakes, or add black sesame seeds or @traderjoeslist EBTB) served alongside veggie dippers. This is the easiest appetizer to serve guests!⁣⠀
✔️Atop a base of greens along with chickpeas, olives, leftover roasted veggies, & a sprinkle of Italian seasoning. ⁣⠀
✔️Spread onto a plate to serve as the base for roasted veggies (such as cauliflower).⁣⠀

  • funny story: i was in an uber with my friend the other day and we were talking about nutrition (surprise surprise haha) and we were discussing how, whenever people find out we’re nutrition majors, the first question we get asked is “so what do you think about the _____ diet (insert diet of choice)?”

we were in an express pool, so naturally the uber had to go pick up someone else, and when they got into the uber, we were still continuing our conversation about nutrition. after 5 minutes of hearing our convo, the new passenger goes “so what do you guys think about the keto diet?”

my friend and I looked at each other, smiling, and gave our answer. this may have been a pointless story and a waste of 30 sec of your time, but i thought it was funny that we had literally just talked about that exact senario. does anything like this happen to y’all?

anyhoo, lets get back to the food: smoked salmon + avocado toast with spinach and pickled onions (make sure to add some lemon juice on top to give it that extra kick). all onto of @basecamp.bakery bread 🍞

  • Allow me to introduce you to the Pickle Pizza from @diepieyeg. A surprisingly delicious pie that will have you so intrigued you will forget it is based around salty and acidic cucumbers.
