  • Today on December 12, 1913, Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, The Mona Lisa, was finally recovered after being stolen two years earlier. ••••• The Mona Lisa, also known as La Gioconda, is perhaps the most famous and recognizable painting in the world. It mysteriously depicts the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, a wealthy merchant from the Republic of Florence. The Mona Lisa was painted by one of the great Italian Renaissance artists, Leonardo da Vinci in 1504. Her facial expression is famed for being alluring, mysterious and aloof. It is currently estimated to be worth $800 million. ••••• The painting was (and still is) displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris. On the morning of August 21 1911, a museum employee noticed it was missing. Museum officials immediately launched an investigation and shut down for a whole week. Over two years later, it was recovered from Vincenzo Peruggia hotel room in Florence. At the time, Peruggia was living as a restaurant waiter in Italy, but was indeed one of the accomplices in the heist. ••••• It was revealed that the thieves had disguised themselves as Louvre janitors. Peruggia was convicted of robbery in an Italian court and spent only 14 months in jail. The Mona Lisa was eventually returned to the Louvre and is now protected by bullet proof glass.
