  • It's been almost a year since I made the decision to drop cable.

Honestly, I would make the same decision again.

The last cable bill I got was a little over $100. $100!!! For me, that number is insane, and this is the exact face I made when I saw the bill.

Nope. Never again was I going to pay that much for entertainment.

So, what have I been doing instead? I use 4 different things that are literally my go-tos. I watch any show or movie I want, and I never pay more than $20 a month.

I am a Netflix user and I love it. Netflix costs about $11/month. However, they seem to be dropping more shows and movies and are bringing in more Netflix original content.

My favorite is my Amazon Fire Stick. Oh my gosh how it opened doors. It allows you to stream video content to your TV via an internet connection. It has over 15,000 apps including Netflix, Amazon Prime (which is another outlet I use), Hulu, HBO, and soooooo much more.

You do have to have a internet connection and the stick itself costs about $40 for the basic model. What totally changed the game and saved me the most money is jailbreaking my Fire Stick.

Now, before you yell at me, a jailbroken Fire Stick is not illegal. Just don't stream pirated content with it. It basically unlocks every available app and game you could imagine.

Want to watch sports but dont want to pay for ESPN? Yes, you can watch TV channels free of charge via apps on the Fire Stick. Mind blown, right!! Trust me, it's a game changer.

I was able to jailbreak mine watching a YouTube video, and it was pretty easy.

What are some of the ways you are getting your TV fix without the cable prices?

  • How we gave our household income a $2400 raise.

Our cable bill was $274/month including internet and wire line.
Downgraded to basic cable (local channels) including internet and wire line for $90/month.

Subscribed to Sling TV $25/month.

Subscribed to Hulu which is free for Sprint customers.

Reduction of $159/month!
That’s $200/month of gross income savings, $2400 annual! πŸ’πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ And most important my wife has adjusted well to the new streaming channels and is enjoying The Huluween month. πŸ§›πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ§Ÿβ€β™€οΈπŸ§Ÿβ€β™‚οΈπŸŽƒ Do it! You won’t regret it!

PS. I always use gross income when analyzing (what we need to earn before taxes to pay for stuff after taxes)

I get many DMs from people asking how to start their #debtfreejourney. After pointing them towards @daveramsey, FPU, and #thetotalmoneymakeover, the conversation often becomes β€œbut there is no money left in the budget to start an emergency fund or debt snowball.” First let me say, I GET IT! This was us πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈ The income coming in was never enough to cover what was going out...and we have NEVER had expensive taste or a frivolous lifestyle! I struggled with the question, what in the world could we possibly cut!!?? It wasn’t until I looked at everything we were spending and realized that in order for us to cut the budget, we were gonna have to feel it. It was gonna hurt. But it would give us the ability to START.
β€”
So the claws came out...Here’s what I cut in those first 90 days of budgeting:
1️⃣ Switched cell phones. I was paying $150/month for ATT and still owed on my phone. I sold my smart phone on Craigslist to pay off what I owed, then I switched to Cricket and now pay $45/month. I used the free flip phone I got for signing up until I could save for a refurbished iPhone. ($55 savings)
2️⃣ Cut the cable. We paid around $200 for a bundle. Now we just have Netflix, Sling TV, and internet for $90 combined ($110 savings).
3️⃣ Canceled ALL subscriptions! I had a few subscriptions that individually did not seem expensive, and even a couple I didn’t even realize I was paying for! Together it totaled $40. I canceled all of them ($40 savings).
4️⃣ Stop eating out and cut your grocery budget. We used to spend $1000 on groceries, and eating out. Now we spend $500 on groceries and $0 on eating out ($500 savings).
β€”
Those budget cuts ALONE immediately saved us $705 per MONTH! That is HUGE!!! Did we feel the sacrifice....you betcha. But without struggle there often is no progress.
β€”
If you have a small shovel, are a #oneincome family, or otherwise feel like you can’t dig yourself out of debt...I’m here to tell you YOU CAN. Now start #adulting and get to work! πŸ’ͺ🏻 Love ya ❀️❀️❀️❀️

  • The holidays are quickly approaching. Take some time now to see what expenses you can cut to start saving for the extra food and gifts you will be purchasing. Cable is also something I use to look at first. From calling to negotiate a lower rate or dropping it all together, this is one that can save you lots. Plus after the holidays, it will help you have a head start on your saving/debt repayment goals for 2020! #lessstresswithjess.com #slingtv #cutcable #budget #savingmoneytips
