  • Business tip (especially in fitness): You can’t market yourself or your gym as the “hardest workout in town”

It might seem like an effective marketing tool, but this is one of the biggest mistakes you can do as a trainer or instructor. Don’t fall into this trap. I know a few studios in the city who were notorious as “the toughest workout in NYC.” Lo and behold, they rarely get mentioned. One studio even closed down their space.

When you cater to the hardcore and most extreme, you are catering to the <5%. A-type personalities that are too serious about their workout will be the hardest ones to please. They are the ones most likely to leave. A majority of your members will attend a very difficult workout “occasionally” because they are going to have to physically and mentally prepare themselves. The fewer you see them, the less your revenue. Common sense, no?

If you’re talented enough, you’ll know how to progress the advanced athletes. If you’re smart enough and well read, you should be able to have grandma take your group fitness class. There is a sweet spot that you need to find: a workout that’s challenging enough, but is sustainable for newbies to come back the next day.

The majority of your clientele are normal 9-5 working people. The gym is not their life. It’s their escape from life. They don’t need to be yelled at, they don’t need to be unable to move the next day, and they especially don’t need to get hurt

  • *Slow Clap* What a dick move by @airbnb cause my Airbnb Account was simply shut down, no explanation, nothing. I asked for a reason as I have perfect credit history etc and this was the very unhelpful reply. An example of "nyer nyer we just hate you" from a company. If I was in training to be a politician I’d expect this sort of nonsensical bullshit reply to a question and sure feels personal, maybe they hate conservation? 
Does anyone else have a similar experience? @bchesky you really must explain to customers a more concise reason than this verbal dribble I just got.
