The battle between one-and-done athletes and those who like to squeeze in another attempt before the Monday deadline is revisited every Open season. But who should reign supreme? ⚔

To put it simply, YES re-doing a workout is totally worth it. When taking on an Open workout more than once, elite athletes usually gain a few extra reps here, a few less minutes there. But what makes re-doing a workout effective?

1⃣ “Getting into the groove” is a real thing. The nervous system understands the movements better and can transfer through the combinations more seamlessly on a second attempt. This reduction in neural stress means a higher output capacity, therefore improved performance.

2⃣ Athletes can refine their pacing strategy. Did they blow up faster than expected? Or did they actually have too much in the tank when the buzzer rang? A first test run enables review and refinement.

3⃣ Learning from mistakes is a huge way to increase reps and decrease times. Maybe the athlete placed the bar in an inconvenient place for transitioning but didn’t realise until they were well into the workout.

4️⃣ IT’S FUN! We all know the post-workout endorphin rush, and the rush is even greater when you’ve bested your previous self. Athletes are competitive animals who always strive to perform at their very best. Who wouldn’t want that feeling of victory when you know you’ve done better than yesterday? You have to train today anyway!!
