  • Dusted in eye-popping cobalts, cyans and sapphires, Uzbekistan has an incredible tangle of history to unravel and hidden sites to uncover. From its former Persian rule and key location along the famed Silk Road, to which is owes much of its grand architecture and culture, to a short period under Soviet rule, this jumble of traditions is a treasure trove waiting to be cracked open. We veer you through Uzbekistans great sites, mingle with their nomads and cross into the autonomous Karakalpakstan Republic - a lesser known region often over shadowed by the other 'stans'. Karakalpakstan was once a rich delta feeding from the Aral Sea, part of the Silk Road and also a place of great Islamic learning. Now it barely survives. Almost completely deserted, the small republic provides a fascinating experience to the well healed traveller showcasing how regions can go from prosperous to destructed.

Wind back through Uzbekistan as you stay in hidden villages, live with locals and embrace the stunning scenery. Spend an evening under the stars in a yurt, deep in the Kyzyl Kum desert where the night sky will be one of the clearest and most spectacular star gazing experiences you may ever have. #crookedcompass #followadifferentpath #silkroad #uzbekistan #centralasia #5stans

Travel by land over the border to Tajikistan, the land of mountains, dotted with sapphire lakes and snow capped peaks. Stone villages scatter through the valleys, urging you to explore this landscape of sheer beauty. Travelling through Tajikistan is not easy. Roads are poor, hot water is a rarity and the locals are only just starting to warm to travellers. A destination that offers a true glimpse to a rare and remote way of life, Tajikistan's serene beauty will not disappoint.

  • KURDISTAN - the cradle of civilisation and home to more archaeological and historic sites, including the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, than any other region on earth. Countless citadels, shrines, churches mosques and ancient temples dot its landscape, not to mention the oldest known bridge, ancient aqueduct ruins and there are even Neanderthal caves!

Stand on the site of Alexander the Great's historic battle with the Ruler of Persia, Darius III. Let your imagination run wild as you learn of this site that has never been excavated - what wondrous artefacts lie beneath this battlefield where as many as a million men fought for the future of the known world and the title Lord of the Earth. This is truly a fresh and largely unexplored region - perfect for those with an adventurous soul. #crookedcompass #followadifferentpath #kurdistan #iraq #iraqikurdistan #asia #centralasia #culture

  • RELEASE AN ORANGUTAN: One of the most exclusive experiences in our suite of tours, is the rare opportunity to release a re-habituated orangutan back into the depths of the East Kalimantan jungle.

Your journey follows through the stunning Hindu temples of Prambanan before setting off for a train journey through Central Java. In the old Dutch city of Malang, you have the opportunity to stay in the Former President Sukarno's residence. Experience a magical sunrise from Mt Bromo, a haven for nature lovers, with its volcano, craters and sand plateaus as well as its breath-taking serene savannah. Then for the true highlight... Orangutans, the only great Ape in Asia and the worlds largest tree climbing mammal, find their native habitat under great threat. Crooked Compass is working with Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS) founded in 1991, with the support of Government Organisations and international businesses.

We have joined with BOS to offer for the first time ever, to provide travellers with access to join the release program. This is not a group tour. It's about individual desire to help, learn and assist in releasing Orangutan deep into the jungle into protected areas. This is a once in a lifetime experience. Its very well controlled and you will work and be under the guidance of the team release leader and the head vet.

Your journey after 10 days, finishes in Balikpapan where you have the opportunity to extend and explore the remote Black River and its endemic wildlife or fly to your next destination.

Travel dates will be determined depending on orangutan release dates - please express your interest with your 'window' of dates. #crookedcompass #followadifferentpath #orangutanrelease #orangutan #conservation #templesvolcanoesandorangutans #wildlife #borneo #indonesia

Grinding rocks together to create paint, using broken side mirrors of cars and rubbing pig fat into their skin so they don't burnt are all part of what you will see wandering the fields before the festival starts. Simply surreal. #crookedcompass #followadifferentpath #mounthagen #png #papuanewguinea #festival #culture

  • TRACK SNOW LEOPARDS IN INDIA: This epic adventure takes you to Hemis National Park, Ladakh - India's most protected Snow Leopard area with expert trackers on hand to trace the cats’ scents, trails and markings, this journey will keep the pulse racing as you follow every sign of their movements whilst exploring some of the world’s most spectacular scenery. This snow leopard trek offers you the chance to track these ‘ghosts of the mountains’ and their prey through the snow, with the ability to witness these sadly diminishing but stunning creatures in their natural environment - and to capture all this through your camera lens.

Since Snow Leopards are generally found at elevations between 3000-4500m, this trek takes you through stunning Himalayan alpine and sub-alpine zones where vegetation is sparse and temperatures are extreme. Snow Leopards are most active at dawn and dusk and show a strong preference for cliffy habitat with moderately to very broken terrain, rocky outcrops and ravines. They are opportunistic predators and are known to take prey up to three times their own weight, though a large part of their diet comprises of small prey like marmots, pika, hare, birds and domestic livestock. #crookedcompass #followadifferentpath #snowleopardtracking #snowleopards #india #hemisnationalpark #ladakh #leh #conservation #wildlife

  • HIDDEN IRAN: A world away from the cities and deserts of Iran are the beautiful Alborz Mountains. Rising up from the Caspian Sea, a lesser explored region becons. Experience a glimpse into a quieter, greener and more traditional side of Iran.

Travel to Alamut, one of the castles on Freya Stark’s route in her 1930s classic book, ‘The Valley of the Assassins’ before visiting the impressive Roodkhan Castle. From the traditional village of Masule, you will begin a series of walks into the hills and high plateaus of the Talesh Highlands taking in a combination of the stunning mountain scenery and visits to the nomadic Shahsavan.

  • Discover the raw beauty of Venezuela's deltas, waterfalls and remote communities. On the banks of the third largest river in South America, the Warao Indians, the guardians of the Orinoco River, still live virtually untouched by the modern world. They are one of the oldest ethnic groups in the world.

Venture further into Canaima National Park to experience some of the worlds most ancient scenery. Bordering Brazil and Guyana, this national park is distinguished by its numerous tepuis, massive flat-topped mountains that rise from grassy savanna and are often covered in mist. Fly over the 979m-tall Angel Falls waterfall flowing from Auyantepui mountain into the Cañón del Diablo, a steep canyon surrounded by tropical forest.

Venture off the coast to Venezuela's little-known Los Roques. Home to over 50 coral islands, numerous low reefs and sand flats, each islet has powder-soft, white sand beaches, set in shallow emerald and turquoise waters. The perfect way to wrap up your Venezuelan experience. #crookedcompass #followadifferentpath #trailsofvenezuela #southamerica #venezuela #angelfalls #latinamerica #waterfalls

  • We are beyond excited to announce our partnership with @untrashy_ With travellers becoming more and more conscious of their impact when travelling, these guys are leading the way in helping reduce plastic waste. What do they have to say about their purpose? #untrashy is a movement to change attitudes and behaviours surrounding single-use plastic by providing stylish and affordable sustainable alternatives. As responsible travellers, it's important that we minimise our footprint on the countries we visit, especially those with limited recycling and waste management infrastructure. The #untrashy range of travel cutlery, cups, food containers and drinking straws means you can take what you need and 'refuse single-use' while abroad (HACK: the organic cotton produce bags are perfect for packing small items such as socks and underwear so they are always easy to find in your luggage - you're welcome!). #untrashy donate 10% of profits to marine conservation projects. You can also join the team for local beach clean ups and more! #followadifferentpath #crookedcompass #zeroplastic #sustainabletravel #conservation

  • Welcome to Kings Canyon - Northern Territory, Australia.

Scale the towering Kings Canyon to catch the sunrise across Watarrka National Park in the Northern Territory. Watarrka National Park has been home to local Aboriginal people for more than 20,000 years. The 105,200 hectares of land is under the custodianship of the Martutjarra-Luritja people and contains three Aboriginal living areas: Lila, Wanmarra and Ulpanyali. The park contains more than 600 species of plants and numerous native animals. It is culturally significant to Aboriginal people and continues to be a place of traditional observance, customs and ceremony.

Australia Day is a day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation and a day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the generations to come. But most importantly it is a day to acknowledge the original custodians of the land, our Indigenous Australians.

  • Often forgotten and far from the hype and predictability of what is commonly known as the ‘The Gringo Trail’ (the sites comprising of Cusco, Puno and Machu Picchu), are the isolated and lesser discovered verdant Northern Highlands of Peru. Home to many Inca and pre Inca ruins, an Andean adventure awaits those travellers who are looking for something a little off beat.

Exploring the Temple of Pachacamac in Lima, the largest Mud City of the Americas, Chan, built by the Chimu tribes, the lush rainforest and the Fortress of Kuelap in Chachapoyas (the country's second-most thrilling archaeological site after Machu Picchu) as well as a rare mystical cleansing Shaman experience are just a handful of the many outstanding experiences you will have in the Kingdom of the Sun with us. #crookedcompass #followadifferentpath #forgottenperu #chanchan #chimu #inca #trujillo #northernperu #peru #latinamerica #southamerica

  • In a different world to Turkey’s bustling seaside resorts, the exciting lands of eastern Turkey offer adventure, rich cultural experiences and breathtaking scenery. Beginning in the lush mountains of the Black Sea region, travel across arid plains, past crumbled villages and deep blue lakes.

The tangle of ancient and current cultures will intrigue you as you visit evocative, historical sites such as the ancient Armenian capital of Ani, the Byzantine masterpiece that is Sumela Monastery, the Ishak Pasa Palace, the architecture of Mardin and many seldom visited spots such as Lake Çildir and the remote Georgian churches and fortresses in the northeast. Mount Ararat at 5137m dominates the Iranian border and Lake Van, vast and mountain encircled, feeds the plains near the Iraqi frontier.

With its broad vistas and dramatic scenery, its ubiquitous borders, and a fascinating history and culture, this trip gives a truly varied insight into a part of Turkey rarely seen by foreign visitors. #crookedcompass #followadifferentpath #easternbordersofturkey #eastturkey #turkey #europe #asia

  • Kidepo National Park is one of Africa’s most isolated parks based in the far North of Uganda, bordering Southern Sudan and Kenya. Kidepo has a variety of elusive predators such as the Aardwolf, Bar-eared Fox, Caracal, Cheetah, Hunting dog, Striped Hyena as well as a variety of Elephants, Lions, Leopards and Rothschild Giraffes. Over 450 species of bird have been recorded in the park, of which 58 are birds of prey and 14 that are endemic to the region.

Kidepo is also the home of two authentic tribal villages, the Karamojong and Ik people, who you will meet, share stories, learn about their unique culture before setting up camp and staying the night. The Karamojong are a proud warrior and cattle herding culture that have shunned modernising, whilst the Ik People are the first inhabitants and most marginalised people now pushed to the mountains of Kidepo and finding new sources of food and income after having to abandon hunting. Get off the beaten track and come visit Africa’s best kept secret with Crooked Compass. Experience what few people do, the greatness of Kidepo Valley National Park. #crookedcompass #followadifferentpath #uganda #kidepovalley #africa

  • Off the beaten track...Naturally! Usually it's our customers wearing our Merino gear in amazing places. This time we've had an incredible experience travelling through Northern Mongolia and staying with the nomadic Tsaachin tribe - reindeer herders. The Tsaachin peope don't stay in the traditional Mongolian gers, but live in urts, similiar to the Native American teepee - quick & easy to pack up and load on their reindeer to move to the next camp. Even though it was summer the temperature was pretty chilly but we were very warm in our traditonally heated urts & in our Merino gear..... and even warmer was the welcome by the Reindeer Herders and their families.
