  • The @tennesseeaquarium and a variety of other zoological institutions/conservation organizations have recently declared that 2020 is “The Year of the Turtle” to raise awareness of habitat challenges that threaten our amazing chelonian species!
.
Not only is it “The Year of the Turtle” but it’s also #TurtleTuesday! Here were have a Blanding’s Turtle showing off its characteristic yellow chin! Blanding’s are considered an endangered species in Illinois due to habitat loss. Since 2010 however, we have been helping with the @lcfpd to release of hundreds of head-starter baby Blanding’s in order to help conserve this spectacular turtle species! 🐢💛 .

  • 🐢🐢 Green Season Turtle track.
Around every 2 years females green turtles come to ashore to lay their eggs. They come 3 to 5 times per season, laying an average of 115 eggs in each nest. The eggs incubating take about 60 days.
When walking at the beach in the mornings during monitoring nesting season , that’s what you can look for it 👆👆👌 How cool is that?! #conservation #seaturtles #protectseaturtles #lovetheenvironment #wildlifeconservation #greenturtle

  • Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata). This native plant is a critical and essential resource for the Monarch butterfly as milkweeds are the only host plant for their caterpillars. I find that my caterpillars prefer asclepias tuberosa (butterflyweed) and Asclepias syriaca (common milkweed) but this is still a wonderful native plant. Why plant natives? Well, since you asked:
.
Native plants are critical because they support native insects, most of which are specialists rather than generalists and will not feed on non-natives. Insects are a critical food source for a variety of birds and other animals, particularly those raising young. In fact, almost all land birds require insects to feed their young. Even seed and nectar eating birds must feed their babies insects to ensure their survival.
.
In addition, butterflies, bees, hummingbirds and moths depend on native plants for their rich nectar and pollen. While going about their daily business, pollinators transfer pollen between flowers of the same species. These pollinated plants will then produce fertile seed. Pollinators are critical to our food supply and are responsible for the pollination of the vast majority of all flowering plants. Foods and beverages produced with the help of pollinators include: apples, blueberries, chocolate, coffee, melons, peaches, potatoes, pumpkins, vanilla, almonds and tequila (thank a bat for that one if you are a fan of margaritas!). .

It had been a constant struggle to exactly understand ourselves, have complete trust in that understanding and to convince out clients/friends - what may be good or bad for the project. We often encountered to have the new electrical lines to be chased within the historic walls, to have the most sophisticated mechanical systems of comfort, to have the most expensive fixture or fittings - ..but we hold our lines.
We don't yet know how exact all of these would ensemble to complete the shared common vision. hope we get more opportunities to express ourselves, our skills and our beliefs ...bless us

Galanthus Nivalis

This elegant flower is native to Europe and the Middle East. Many regard these flowers as a welcome sight. As one of the earliest blooming flowers, they are harbingers of Spring soon to come. They were first described in the 4th century BC by Greek author and successor of Aristotle, Theophrastus of Lesbos.

Finally took the time to paint one of my favorite wildcats: the Serval. Servals are closely related to caracals and are the only member of the genus Laptailurus. Their most notable features are their spotted coats, long legs, and big ears! These cats are native to sub-saharan Africa and live mostly in savannahs and wetlands. Their large ears can turn 180 degrees, allowing for a great range of hearing. Their long legs are for keeping their body above mud and water!

These cats are only a little bigger than house cats, weighing between 18 and 40 lbs and standing at an average of 22 inches tall. They are strict carnivores, feeding mostly on rodents, birds, frogs, and reptiles. In fact it is estimated that 80% of their diet is rodents, making them great pest control!

Servals have an IUCN status of Least Concern, but do have threats such as degradation of their habitats and hunting for their pelts. 🐆

  • Kay, one of our archaeologists and an avid birder, has added a new bird to her “life list” – the Marbled Murrelet! This small coastal bird’s numbers have declined since humans began logging its nest tree habitat in the latter half of the 19th century. Since 1990, this species has been listed as ‘Threatened’ by COSEWIC (Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada). On weekends, you’ll often find Kay using her binoculars to count birds as part of “citizen-science” initiatives including eBird, WildResearch, and the Canadian Nightjar Survey. And her passion is contagious!

Here’s what the Principal of Tumakgole Secondary School had to say about the impact #Bikes4ERP has had at her school:
“All the learners who received bicycles performed exceptionally well and they all produced excellent results. One of the students even scored a distinction in Economics, with an 82% pass mark. In addition, our overall Matric results have improved tremendously, from 51,4% in 2017 to 81% in 2019, making us the most improved school in the circuit. We attribute this improvement to the #Bikes4ERP programme. Because of the bicycles, students coming from far away are now punctual and stay in class until 5pm when all lessons end. We urge ERP to continue rolling out this programme, as we have a number of students from other villages who could also benefit from this initiative.” Conserving elephants and rhinos through the alleviation of poverty. • Reposted from @tsavotrust The Tsavo Conservation area comprises 20,000 square Kilometers of dispersal area and 22,000 square kilometers of National Park, representing 49% of Kenya’s total protected land. This vast, mostly roadless expanse of wildlife provides precious habitat for an array of species and great potential for wildlife growth. It is a rare natural resource in a world where wild areas are shrinking at an alarming rate.
Tsavo is home to the largest population of elephants in Kenya - estimated at almost fourteen thousand individuals. However. Tsavo’s elephants are facing a number of threats. With a rapidly expanding human population, most dispersal areas are becoming increasingly utilized by humans with little tolerance towards elephants. Tsavo has also suffered significant elephant poaching over the years. A population estimated to be over 45,000 elephants in the early 1970s plummeted to fewer than 6,000 by 1989.
The formation of KWS and imposition of the international ivory trade ban in 1989, reversed the trend and twenty years of stability saw elephant population bounce back. Sadly, poaching has returned with a vengeance in the last decade and this has placed the elephants, particularly those with big tusks, at huge risk. Without urgent and concerted conservation action, Tsavo’s elephants and an irreplaceable piece of Kenya’s national heritage could be lost forever

  • Reposted from @tsavotrust The Tsavo Conservation area comprises 20,000 square Kilometers of dispersal area and 22,000 square kilometers of National Park, representing 49% of Kenya’s total protected land. • I’ve lived on the OP for twenty-three winters. We’ve had good and bad years, but this feel’s different. Bleaker. Grimmer. Whatever you call it, the closure of the Skagit, Chehalis and Grays Harbor rivers doesn’t stimulate a sense of hope. There are fish around, they are not going extinct this year. But they are not abundant. The runs appear similar, at least based on what I have seen, to the pre-season forecast for the region. During my time here I have always held out hope, just like any well-heeled steelhead angler – the next cast, the run around the bend, one last cast before we go. It’s a religion, really, especially for those that swing flies. But this year isn’t about the type of gear a person fishes or whether they wear tweed or neoprene. It is about the fish. You see, for the first time in twenty-three years I am really afraid. I’m afraid that I might not have another twenty-three years to fish for these fish. Not because I won’t be alive and damn ready to wade the river. No. It’s because wild winter steelhead populations in the Hoh, Queets, and Quinault are in long-term decline, substantially so. And the Quillayute is also struggling, experiencing some of its lowest runs in recent years. Overall, since 1980, the average wild winter steelhead run size has declined by 45% in the Queets and by 37% and 44% in the Hoh and Quinault, respectively. If these trends continue, the populations will be listed for protection under the Endangered Species Act, with fishery closures following close behind. We have enough high-quality habitat for these fish to be more abundant and resilient. An angler can’t simply blame the tribe, or the habitat, or someone else. Nor can the tribes blame the sport angler. We are all responsible. And if the fish don’t turn around, we all will suffer together, finger pointing be damned. The only way out of this morass, so that we don’t end up like Puget Sound, is to collaboratively come up with a vision for the region. Rather than thinking about what our fishery will look like next year, we need to think what we want it to look like ten years from now. Think now, act long-term. #wildsteelhead #conservation #orvisflyfishing
