  • I spent an hour or so this morning cleaning up this little coffin plane. It came to me some time ago in an auction box lot and has been sitting in a drawer since.
The blade had been “sharpened “; both sides, freehand so needed to be taken back about 1/4” and a new bevel established.
There was even a paper label still on the wedge. The outline where it was can still be seen. Looking forward to getting a bit of use from it. #nooitgedacht #handtools #coffinplane #swedishsteel #handplanes #handplane

  • This little coffin plane belonged to my grandfather. He made it himself from what looks like beech. Its been sitting on a shelf in my house for years. All of my hand planes are at the cabin and I needed one for a project im working on so this was brought back into service. The iron was a pain to sharpen because it was thicker at one side more than the other, so I needed to grind the bevel off square so it would sit properly. The details on this are perfect, he really had a skill for working with his hands. #heirloomtools #coffinplane #homemadeplane #oldtools

  • So I started making a high angle coffin smoother from the plans that @calebjamesmaker has on his website. So far the build is going well. The only real flaw thus far is the fact that my mouth opening is about 1/16” too wide. Before making the actual wedge I wanted to see if the plane would take shavings and it does. I still need to properly bed the iron. This is my first successful attempt at making a plane from a solid block. Technically though, the block I’m using is laminated from two pieces of wood. The lamination is the opposite orientation than what a Krenov plane would be. I didn’t want to waste a nice piece of thick hardwood on a plane that I might mess up. The plane is pictured next to my Ulmia Reform Smoother.

  • SLIDE LEFT---> I found this plane wrapped up and forgotten in a box of lanterns. What a nice surprise. It's lovely Lignum Vitae and very heavy and solid. The double iron (blade and chip breaker) us stamped warranted cast steel Ward.

  • My other find from yesterday’s trip to One of a Kind antique mall was this D. Kimberly & Sons coffin plane with a steel sole (3rd photo). I’m not sure if the sole is original or a user add-on as I can’t find a ton of information on the company, though their later planes were revered for the cast-iron insert that would allegedly eliminate cheek blowout. The company was running from 1854-1906 originally under the name D. Kimberly, adding & Sons some time later. With that in mind, along with the I & H Sorby iron (4th photo), I would date this at around the 1870’s-1880’s.
It’s in good condition for its age and I absolutely love the makers mark (2nd photo), so there’s no way I could have left it behind for $9.

  • Before and after a little restoration of an old coffin plane. It had been coated in a stain varnish. Stripped back to the original Beech. Sanded to 600 grit. Oiled and waxed. Iron is stamped Fred Craven Sheffield but i suspect this was a pseudo name for 3rd rate mass produced tools and not a bona fide craftsman. Still a lovely little tool that must be 100 yeas old. Someone took the time to make it so it deserved some TLC. #coffinplane #toolrestoration #handtool #carpentry

  • My Mom sent me this awesome coffin smoother! (Thanks Mom!). It doesn't have any makers marks, outside of the common Ohio Tool Co. double iron. I'm wondering if it might have been user made? Either way whoever this belonged to, loved and used this plane. A lot. You can see an interesting repair (three slotted screws), to fix a split at the toe and it's also starting to split at the cheeks from the wedge. Overall it's a very cool plane and while I probably won't be able to put it to work, I'll still try 😉

  • SLIDE LEFT-----> D.R.Barton Rochester, NY beech Coffin smoother found at the flea market this morning for $20. I love the stamp on the front of the plane (photo 2). There was a Lignum Vitae strike button and a double iron. The photo of the plane iron logo is poor but the logo should look better after cleaning. The plane is from my N.Y. hometown of Rochester.

  • Took some time today to make this old coffin plane useable again. Still needs to be cleaned up some more, but happy with how well it works. No longer just a decoration. #moulsonbrothers#coffinplane#woodshavings#sharp

  • Snap, crackle and pop. Things were going so good too, but this is what happens when I try to multitask at my day job. This coffin plane was part of the many I picked up when I scored that killer number 8 for $40.
This is the only one of the wooden antiques that I think I would have been able to salvage. I was in the middle of cleaning up the old finish and cleaning the blade and trip breaker before sharpening and refinishing and I dropped it. I'm going to epoxy it and see what happens and worst case scenario, it's a nice looking shelf piece.
Thanks for looking

  • But, Grandma, what big eyes you have! This ladies and gents, is the real deal. Professionally made coffin smoothing planes with boxwood mouth closers are impossibly rare. This example was made by ROBERT FAURCLOUGH & CO. 72 Byrom Street, Liverpool somewhere between 1856-1883. For those unfamiliar with this feature, English pattern mitre planes (such as the rear one here) were fitted with tapered 'closers' to maintain mouth size after truing the sole, it's a cool feature that I'll cover in detail later. Mitre planes are a rare find, closed smoothers unheard of. This plane is a quite neglected but is virtually unused. Very well made with crisp detailing throughout. Needless to say, replicas will be made 👌🏻 #planemaking #rockinghorseshit #handplane #coffinplane #osmrd
