I like to use different colored tape on each box to show which room it belongs to (just don’t forget to make a legend!) Plus as an added bonus, it indicates which side of the box is the top!

  • HOW TO HELP A LOVED ONE WITH A HOARDING PROBLEM

This is a very sensitive and delicate matter and should be treated as one.  You need to realize first and foremost that Hoarding is not a choice one choses, it is a direct result of something bigger.  Something bigger than you may not even understand. 
Hoarding is also associated with OCD and mental health issues and may just be the direct result of why they hoard. They simply can’t control their need to hold onto things and may actually suffer acute anxiety whenever they try to throw anything away including items that are useless or should be in the trash.

When you understand just how much a person who hoards suffers mentally, you are more inclined to treat them with understanding and compassion.

You also need to understand that someone who hoards may need the help of a mental health professional while going through the clean up process to help them deal with the frightening negative feelings that getting rid of some of their possessions may cause.

  • I decided to track several habits for my mental well-being because I wanted to be more proactive about managing depressive symptoms.
.
For me, the main triggers for depression are environmental (physical clutter, unwashed dishes, overflowing laundry, unclean house) so I made it a point to do something in those areas every day.
.
I'm going on Day 20. My dishes have been washed and put away almost every night before bed. My laundry is caught up (including towels & sheets). The bathroom gets cleaned 2-3 times/week, but the shower/bathtub gets squeegeed and wiped down almost every day and scrubbed down once a week.
.
I've been religious about my daily push-ups and sit-ups, but struggling to get in 2 minutes of daily cardio.
.
It dawned on me that saying "2 minutes of cardio" required my brain to make decisions, causing friction. What kind of cardio? A walk? Stairs? A jog? An on-demand video?
.
So yesterday I replaced "2 min. of cardio" with at least 10 sets of stairs a day. Yesterday I did 30 sets. This morning I did 21. I can always add more cardio, but on days I don't I will have at least done something to get my heart pumping.
.
I used to struggle with the dinner dishes. I now do as many dishes as I can before dinner's done cooking. After dinner, the dishes get rinsed right away and placed in a sink of hot, soapy water.
.
Reducing laundry friction: 1) Start placing all the empty hangers to one side of the closet. 2) When you take laundry to the washing machine, take the empty hangers with you so you'll have them when the clothes come out of the dryer. 3) Put your clothes in the dryer when you know you'll have time to fold them and hang them when they're done so they don't get wrinkled. 4) Take a minute and put your clothes away right away.

If you struggle with procrastination, let go of the mental chatter and just start doing the thing. Nothing sabotages a goal faster than spending all your time thinking about doing it or not doing it.
.
Are you resisting any goals? Is there anything you can do to reduce friction so you can get to work accomplishing them?

  • It's a Do All the Things kind of day. We fought over breakfast (if you ask for apples, please just eat the apples), did some school (today's color is brown), drew on the window with dry erase markers (I thought she would be so into this...but she wasn't), played a pom pom toss game (another meh for the Beeb), cleaned up all 2,547 pom poms scattered on the basement floor (begrudgingly on Beeb's end), tidied up toys and attempted to declutter (which means Beeb had to touch everything that went in the giveaway box), and ended with some leftover Dollar Tree Christmas crafts (finally a win).
.
I feel like my days are spent trying to find a balance between being a good housewife and a good stay-at-home mom. If I neglect one for the other I always feel some sort of guilt. I see moms that appear to have it all together (you showered before going to the bus stop? How?), but I know they have their struggles too. Comparison is the thief of joy, right?

So, like my gratitude journal reminds me daily, I am letting go of the guilt of not finishing the meal plan, or the guilt of making Beeb play alone for a little while, or the guilt of having her clean laundry stay in the basket for a week...or two (let's be honest, it's almost three now).

Putting things down to deal with later because it's either too hard to deal with or lack of time.⁠

The clutter creep can be slow (and sneaky 🙈).⁠ However it happens, it happens and we have a choice on whether to take action.⁠
Taking action doesn't have to mean allocating hours to declutter, it can start with a decision to be more aware and take small actions regularly.⁠

✔ do a quick review of paperwork before it enters the house and get rid of excess⁠
✔ wait 24 hrs before making a purchase⁠

We all get so used to our surroundings that it becomes all a bit too familiar. But the guru herself, Marie Kondo, says if you're having guests around and want to clean your home up, the best place to start is by literally placing yourself in their shoes. Talk a walk through the front door and through every room looking at it with fresh eyes.

Her big tip is to make sure that every item has a specific place that it goes. And everyone in the house should know where that place it. The remote doesn't just hang out in the living room somewhere, maybe its home is in a specific drawer or on a side table next to the couch.

But the guru herself, Marie Kondo, says if you're having guests around and want to clean your home up, the best place to start is by literally placing yourself in their shoes. Talk a walk through the front door and through every room looking at it with fresh eyes.

    Her big tip is to make sure that every item has a specific place that it goes. And everyone in the house should know where that place it. The remote doesn't just hang out in the living room somewhere, maybe its home is in a specific drawer or on a side table next to the couch.
