  • Taiwan is so close to Japan, yet there's not a lot of cross pollination of the cuisine, so you don't really find Taiwanese specialties in Japan, or at least I've never come across it in my explorations around Japan. But in the LA area, there are Taiwanese communities in many corners, and that usually includes eateries featuring regional Taiwanese specialties. After watching my nephew's hockey game, we found a Taiwanese shop a hop, skip, and jump away from the rink. Formosan restaurant serves up many of the items that I recognize from my visits to Taiwan, and the first thing I went for was the oiled chicken. The first thought of Taiwanese and chicken is probably any of their permutations of fried chicken (which are great), but what they call oiled chicken caught me by surprise the first time I had it in Taiwan. It's basically a confit of chicken, I'm not sure how it's cooked, but judging by the incredibly tender texture, it must be simmered in oil at a low boil for hours. I also ordered some of the greatest hits items like oyster pancake (not pictured), boiled dumplings, beef noodle soup, and the pepper steak to share with the family. I first thought I ordered too much but it was quickly devoured. When there's a teenage athlete in the mix, there's no such thing as over-ordering.

  • Focaccia with fried kimchi from Everyday Korean, page 61

Like I mentioned in my post 2 days ago, I ended up doubling my no-knead sourdough discard pizza dough recipe to make the dough for this since my stand mixer was on the fritz.

Even though it’s not mentioned in the recipe or headnote, the picture in the book looked like they had added some sliced shiitake mushrooms on top, so I threw some on mine as well.  Swipe to see the overhead shot!

I’m into it to try to trick myself as I try to opt for healthy items. Sometimes. I haven’t been to Ike’s in a while and was surprised they have quite the veggie menu! If they’ve alway had it, I didn’t really pay attention before.
Two of my favorite things about @ikessandwiches is their Dutch crunch and that each location has different sandwiches. The Mountain View location is convenient (next to Costco) and has this vegan fried chicken sando.

  • Midweek easy breakfast idea: @halfbakedharvest Coconut Banana Muffins from her new cookbook Super Simple. They really are super simple to make! I made a batch of 12 mini muffins yesterday in less an hour, drizzled honey on top, and had them for breakfast this morning. These are perfect to make in advance if you’re always on the go!

  • I've been walking Bella at least four days a week for nearly 18 months. She and I share a birthday and have a very fun and loving relationship. This week she consumed an enormous amount of treats by eating her way through an Amazon package and then through the packages within. Needless to say there were implications. She's recovering well. I am so in love with so many of the dogs in my life. I'm grateful she's on the mend.

It can be tough to find vegan Thai food, because fish sauce is sneakily in a lot of dishes. However, @copperthroatthai in the East village was very knowledgeable about what you could/couldn’t order as a vegan. All the curries are vegan, and I ordered the Panang curry, pineapple fried rice (minus the egg), fried tofu salad, and veggie dumplings. Everything was well priced and the portions were big too!   • Apple cider-miso caramels from Pastry Love, page 416

I’ve made @smittenkitchen’s apple cider caramels before, and this is the next gen version with miso added instead of salt.  I used white miso instead of red since that’s what’s in my fridge and found the result to be perfectly balanced; there’s a little tang from the cider, a little umami from the miso, but neither is overwhelming.

I thought I could save these to share with others since they keep for months in the fridge, but I don’t know how much longer my stash is going to last the way I keep digging into it!

    I’ve made @smittenkitchen’s apple cider caramels before, and this is the next gen version with miso added instead of salt. I used white miso instead of red since that’s what’s in my fridge and found the result to be perfectly balanced; there’s a little tang from the cider, a little umami from the miso, but neither is overwhelming.

    I thought I could save these to share with others since they keep for months in the fridge, but I don’t know how much longer my stash is going to last the way I keep digging into it!

  • I’m a sucker for anything involving fried tofu. Pair it with fluffy homemade steamed buns and a tangy crunchy cabbage slaw and I’m in HEAVEN! These Crispy Tofu Gua Bao are on the blog today!!! Snuck in a recipe for the buns too. Highly encourage you to try making them from scratch because you’ll never be able to go back to the frozen section kind again! recipe link in bio 🙃
