  • According to Daoist beliefs, today is the day to pray for your misfortune to be dispelled. Why so? Because today is the birthday of the God of Water (水官) as it falls on the 15th day of the tenth month on the traditional Lunar Chinese calendar.

In contrast to a human birthday, the god will grant you wishes on the day commemorating his holy birth. Some also suggested that by sincerely praying to him on this day, all your sins and misfortunes can be deleted from the ‘spiritual records’ and you are free to turn over a new leaf.

As one of the oldest gods in Daoism, the water god has two brothers, the gods of heaven and earth. The god of heaven is in charge of giving blessings, the god of earth grants absolution to wrong doings, while the god of water dispels disaster and misfortune. Together, they form the Three Holy Emperors (三官大帝) of Taoist religion.

This birthday celebration is also known as Xiayuan Festival (下元节), where the believers visit their local temples to burn incense, pray and make offerings consisting of paper ingots, representing gold and silver, stuffed in red paper bags.

Believers carefully label their names on each bag - in case the god gets confused with such an influx of gifts, and forgets whose wish he should grant. The bags will be placed around the main statue in the temple for a rite of blessing performed by Daoist monks, and afterwards, burned for the gods to enjoy.

This festival is not that well known and is a traditional Taoist celebration held in the latter part of the year. It is therefore selected to perform the Hsieh Ping An – Thanksgiving for safety and well being ceremony in the local temples to show gratitude to the gods for the safe year and good harvests. Surely, we all should know the benefit of being grateful for what we have.

⠀

Been taking some time to organize old archive before year's end and working on a few with new eyes.

I'm meddling around with monochrome/b&w edits, and honestly its a lot harder than color edits. Simply producing b&w photo is easy, but to truly capture the essence of the moment, and convey the emotion to the viewers, now that's hard. At least for the time being. Just need to put in more practice.

Gotta love the journey and the struggle, agree?

Any tricks that you like to use when working on b&w?
