  • There were a couple of interesting sedges in the fen that I worked in yesterday. The first picture is of fen star sedge (Carex sterilis) which is unique among most sedges because it can have individual plants that produce either all male or female flowers. The second photo is of bristle-stalked sedge (Carex leptalea). #Carex #Cyperaceae #Sedges #Sedge #Botany #Plants #Nature #Indiana

  • For this #SedgeResourceWednesday I'll be featuring a book that you might already have on your shelves.
.
.
.
Wetland Plants of Ontario is by no means a comprehensive or sedge-specific book, but it does cover some solid basics (including 27 species of Carex). It is also handy being a smaller guide that covers a variety of plants, and so limits the number of books you are carrying in the field.
.
.
.
If you are interested in learning more about sedges but don't want to commit to a potentially pricy sedge ID book, this might be a good place to start!

  • Carex aurea or golden sedge is most commonly found in calcareous wetlands, disturbed areas, and open communities without strong competition. The perigynia are pale at first, then become bright orange and fleshy when mature. When ripe, I find that the perigynia have a sweet taste to them. The distinctive shape and color of the perigynia make this Carex difficult to confuse with other species. The only close relative of this species is Carex garberi. Truly a beautiful and unique Carex species. #carex#carexaurea#goldensedge#sedges#meadows#wetland#wetlands#naturelove#nature#naturephotography#naturelovers#botany#plants#plants

  • Encountered a very different kind of sedge at work the other day. Although still in the Cyperaceae (Sedge) family, Eriophorum viridicarinatum (common name: Green-keeled Cottongrass or Thin-leaf Cottonsedge) is in a different genus than Carex (true sedges).
.
.
.
Although the stem of this sedge is flat towards the base, it does become triangular towards the top of the stem. E. viridicarinatum is part of the group of cotton grasses that has multiple, distinctly stalked and nodding spikes, rather than an erect, round seed head.
.
.
.
This sedge is usually found in bogs, Tamarack swamps, and wet meadows.

  • While the city is implemeting an important sewer separation project, it's also important to consider ways to divert and clean stormwater without costly engineering projects. With the help of some amazing partners, we installed a new bioretention swale just before July 4th. BIioswales are intentionally planted rain gardens designed to accept large volumes of water and retain it long enough for plants to utilize and clean it while it recharges the water table belowground.
The illustrious Bob Henrickson from the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum chose most of the plants and brought them down to help us get everything layed out. Our volunteer coordinator, Cienna, brought a contingent of OP folks to help install plants, and Brian Byers from Great Plains Nursery brought Dalton with him to flex some planting muscles as well! What a team! Also thanks to Greenlife Gardens for getting the grading work done on fairly short notice. The contours came out just right.

Summer is less than ideal weather for planting, but it was cool and cloudy that morning. We put all 600+ plants in the ground before lunchtime! 10 different types of sedge and lots of other great plants that can tolerate standing water and dry conditions in between rain events. Plants truly are the best type of "mulch". Just a few hours after we finished, the sky opened up and dumped a beautiful refreshing rain on everything. The timing was wonderful. Check out how the four retention cells were filled the day we planted. Perfect! Stay tuned for more amazing information about the purpose of this garden and what we hope to learn from this landscape. Many thanks to the Nebraska Forest Service for the grant support, Great Plains Nursery and Nebraska Statewide Arboretum for high quality plants and people! Now we need to keep other plants out while our plants establish! More photos and videos below in the comments.

  • A side-by-side comparison of Carex flava (left) and Carex viridula (right). This was taken a few days after C. flava was picked, and so it is already turning very yellow, but they are much more similar in colour when both fresh.
.
.
.
When seen together the differences between these two sedges become apparent, especially the longer beaks and reflexed perigynia characteristic of C. flava.

  • No, this isn't a repeat post, this is Carex viridula (common name: Little Green Sedge). It is a smaller, more rare sedge that may easily be confused for C. flava (especially since they often are found together in wet sandy habitats).
.
.
.
If you collect a sample, you aren't likely to miss-ID this as C. flava or C. cryptoleptis as the perigynia are usually still 1 mm smaller on C. viridula, even at their longest.
.
.
.
The perigynia on C. viridula are also not as drastically angled downwards, although a hybrid between flava x viridula can occur, which makes ID even more fun!

1 - tamarack (Larix laricina) ... at Pointe aux Chenes, Michigan
2, 6 - marsh grass-of-Parnassus (Parnassia palustris) ... at Pukaskwa National Park
3 - female catkin of bog birch (Betula pumila)... stigmalicious! ... at Goulais River, Ontario
4 - female spike of bearded sedge (Carex comosa) - those curved beak teeth! ... near Mackinac City, Michigan
5 - mountain death camas (Anticlea elegans) - I suspect some portion of this plant is poisonous based on it's name :)... at Pointe aux Chenes, Michigan

  • Today my office was an interesting late successional bog shrub meadow and adjacent swamp woods with the very late stages of a sphagnum bog in Portage Co. The meadow was under a power line and being invaded with glossy buckthorn, reed canary grass, and numerous Rubus species with few open peat areas remaining. The ancient sphagnum bog had transitioned to an ash/maple/birch swamp woods and the kettle pond a shaded mucky pit full of swamp loosestrife and pockets ofskunk cabbage, highbush blueberry, catberry, and roseshell azalea around the margins. I was surprised to find a number of the state-listed species hanging on in the power line cut, most notably a few of the sedges. Featured photos are:
• 1. Few-seeded sedge (Carex oligopserma) [S2]
• 2. Virginia chain fern (Woodwardia virginica) [S3]
• 3. Common beaked sedge (Carex utriculata) [S3]
• 4. Flat-branched tree clubmoss (Dendrolycopodium obscurum)
• 5. Howe’s sedge (Carex atlantica ssp. capillacea) [S3]
• 6. Hay-scented fern (Dennstaedtia punctilobula)
• 7. Rattlesnake mannagrass (Glyceria canadensis)
• 8. Royal fern (Osmunda regalis) and ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris)
• 9. Boggy sedge meadow opening
• 10. Storm that chased me back to the car and proceeded to rain/blow harder than I’ve experienced in recent memory!
