  • One of the biggest issues people are facing when they come to me for coaching is they鈥檙e unable to lose weight eating very few calories per day. When I tell them they are going to need to raise them up if they want to make progress they are fearful of the sudden weight gain they might experience.

Unless you weigh 54kg there really is no reason to be eating sub 1200 calories/day. For men, going under 1600 is rarely necessary.

If you鈥檙e not losing weight at these levels then going lower is not the answer. Think about it 鈥 if you鈥檙e maintaining your weight eating 1200 calories per day, that means you鈥檇 theoretically need to eat 700 calories/day to lose 0.4kg/week.

Does that sound realistic? Sustainable?

The problem is you鈥檙e letting fear get in the way. It鈥檚 understandable. After all, if you鈥檙e maintaining your weight eating 1200 calories per day then eating anything more will result in weight gain 鈥 right?

Your fears are justified and you very well might gain weight in the interim. But remember, weight is not fat.

Any time you go from a long period of under-eating to suddenly eating more food there is a good chance you鈥檙e going to gain some weight.

You鈥檙e likely walking around with depleted glycogen reserves. All this means is that the fuel your muscles store for exercise isn鈥檛 topped off. Glycogen is water and glucose. It is not fat.

When you raise your calories by 200, 500, or more your muscles are going to soak up the additional fuel. This is good weight. Again, it is not fat.

Most people assume any weight gain is bad. This couldn鈥檛 be further from the truth. It鈥檚 all about body composition. When your muscles store that extra glycogen that means you just increased your lean body mass. This is going to benefit you in the long run. .

Berries are my favorite class of fruit because they are  beautiful, versatile and JAM-packed with antioxidants! (see what I did there?) They are sweet, yet so low in sugar and calories. When I can鈥檛 resist a delicious chocolate, birthday, or cheese cake, I鈥檒l take a few berries and thin slice of cake and eat them together to balance out the flavor and fat. Plus, they are incredible for our brain and gut health. Berries contain large amounts of vitamins C and A, essential for immunity and preventing illness. 鈦b仯
My favorite berry, and fruit,  has always been raspberry. Raspberries have  more fiber than any other food per gram and they fit perfectly on the tips of your  fingers, which my daughter loves. We call them 鈥渞aspberry manis.鈥濃仯鈦 馃拝馃徎 鈦b仯
Blackberries are also incredibly high in fiber and low in sugar and calories.鈦b仯 They are so good dipped in peanut butter (as you see me do in my stories馃憣馃徎) 鈦b仯
馃尡 馃挵 It is a good idea to get organic when you can. Their skins are thin so it鈥檚 hard to remove the pesticide sprays with washing. Frozen organic berries are an inexpensive and healthy choice.鈦b仯 鈦b仯
鉂わ笍 Blueberries are fantastic and have been linked to a wide array of health benefits including lowering blood pressure and improving memory.鈦b仯 馃 鈦b仯
馃イ馃崜Strawberries are always fab! Did you know they are the only fruit with seeds on the outside? They are low in calories,  high in vitamin C, and freeze beautifully for smoothies.鈦b仯 鈦b仯
Goji berries are hard to find fresh but dried, unsweetened goji berries are delicious and fun to use in a smoothie bowl or yogurt parfait. I use them to make yogurt or chocolate bark as well. Goji juice has also been shown to protect skin. It is so rich in beta carotene and antioxxidants that were shown, in studies, to protect from damaging UV rays. 鈥斺

How we interpret and react to information presented to us shapes many aspects of our lives. And when it comes to presented nutritional information, our interpretation and reaction will be defined by our current knowledge and our willingness to listen, or not listen.

There is an array of available evidence based, practical solutions to your nutrition goal. But there is probably a lot more unsubstantiated, impractical drivel presenting itself on your social media feed. Proclaiming why you should restrict certain foods because they make you fat more than others. Claiming certain foods cause disease. And bypassing basic nutritional concepts such as energy balance, movement and enjoyment.

So when a pseudoscientist presents cherry picked information stating that carbohydrates (or any macronutrient) is bad for you, it is time to disregard what they have to say and forego entertainment of any kind of debate. -

For most people insulin and the glycemic index will be of secondary relevance to energy balance for many health markers. If that latter is ignored prior to the formers taking centre stage of our aims, we are attempting to sprint 100m before we can walk 10m. -

When someone tries to sell you something founded on unnecessary fear mongering for a lot of money, it鈥檚 your job to stop their contorted efforts at increasing their wealth at the cost of your best interests. This comes through understanding of basic nutrition in relation to your specific goal. -

With a calm collective approach, you can then regularly shut down any prospect of being persuaded by something that sounds too good to be true. Instead carrying on on your unique journey towards your best life possible. And that will likely include patience and carbs. 馃檪
