  • We had been watching a mommy duck sitting in a bush that the dog sniffed out and the kids thought was dead... I told them it was brooding (nesting) and I told them to stay away from it but I would periodically check to see if she was there. She always was. But it's a heavy traffic area and ducks lay eggs one a day... I really hope nothing happened to her and that she just decided to lay her remaining eggs in a safer spot... But she laid one, sat in it diligently for a week and we haven't seen it since. Afraid to touch the egg, it sat in the nest alone for 24 hours... (Ducks only leave their nests for up to an hour at a time) Finally, I couldn't take it and we stashed the egg on a heating pad in my dresser drawer. I worked all day telling the kids not to get their hopes up... But it looks like we may have a new, little family member... #definitelyalive #duckegg #rescue #rehabilitate #embryo #candling #moreresearchneeded

  • Babies! It's day 9 (I could be off a day or two so maybe day 10-11?) and I candled the three eggs I know are fertilized. The video is kinda hard to see because I have to candle them in the pitch black closet and all the eggs are brown, making it harder to see inside.

BUT...they are moving!!! Little flutters and jumps!
Hopefully, you can make some of it out. The third egg showed the least movement and was hard for me to make out.

I'm going to try to leave them alone. It takes 21 days for them to hatch. So hard to wait!! Fingers crossed I'll be posting newly hatched chicks on April 30th. Send good thoughts!!

  • I posted a video on our Tales From the Mutiny Facebook page today that I took Apr 9th. It shows our young Leeloo (a blue laced red Wyandotte) sitting on some eggs. Hens can get broody but that doesn't mean the eggs are fertilized. Well, today I was able to candle the eggs. I used a flashlight to illuminate the eggs to see inside. Out of the 7 eggs she's sitting on it looks like 3 are definitely growing chicks.
I will candle them again in a few days to double check. In the meantime, I see a lot of reading in my future in preparation for some new chicks. All 3 fertilized eggs are brown so the moms are either brown leghorns, a Rhode Island Red and/or Leeloo...dad is the one and only Heckle, a while silkie.

  • 🐣 I’ve been playing chirping noises and momma hen clucking sounds for the eggs which makes them extra wiggly- and all three are happy, active, and expected to hatch within the week! When they’re older they’ll go to a little farm in Puyallup to live freely with other happy chickens😢💕
Their names are Vivie, Moo moo, and ______... still need a third name. Any suggestions?

  • Top: the day I shipped. Bottom: 24 hours after the egg was delivered. This shows that the air sac went from the top of the egg, to the bottom. If you look closely, the airsac is on the bottom right of the egg. This means that the Tortoise inside is not “floating” in amniotic fluid anymore. It has absorbed most, if not all of its yolk sac. The amniotic fluid and other membranes are slowly drying out. The baby tortoise is sensing gravity. With all the stuff inside the egg drying up and being absorbed, it has room to move more easily. So it is righting itself. This means it will start to hatch very soon. My prediction is within 24 hours. When it does hatch, it most likely will not have a yolk sac. If it does, it will be very small.

  • Day six chicken egg incubation: the vitilline membrane has spread over the yolk surface. The embryo has taken on a C shape. Cardiac activity has begun. The brain is starting to develop and the embryo can be easily identified, and within it, the eye and the upper and lower limbs. The amniotic cavity has formed which will protect and subsist the growing chick until hatch date. Eventually, the beak will develop a razor sharp point which, on hatch day, will puncture the air pocket at the top of the egg and allow the chick to breathe as it uses the sharp point to scissor it’s way out of the top of the egg. #themoreyouknow #egg #candling #youngfarmers #backyardchickens #growyourown #chicks #spring #farmlife #minifarm #incubation

  • It’s spring, which means time for spring chickens. I’ve got some really fun breeds in the incubator this year, and so far so good as far as fertility rate. This is day 4 of incubation, and I’m “candling” aka lighting the egg from below to reveal the contents within. Let’s call it a low-tech ultrasound. Candling is by far my favorite part of hatching chicks. My second favorite part is watching them hatch, and my third favorite part is the ninja operation of putting them under a broody chicken mama so I don’t have to deal with heat lamps, dirty bedding and the dust that comes with putting babies in a brooder. #farmlife #knowyohrfarmer #chickens #chicks #youngfarmers #minifarm #homesteading #candling #egg

  • Candled some eggs tonight. Two thirds of the chicken eggs have started and half of the turkey eggs. Looking hopeful!
