  • When working on something you the medium or media will allow you to. Not how long someone wants you to. You have to make the best product you can. That is why you should not rush. I am still hand stitching fabric together to get the length and width that I want. I am getting close to the width I need. I just need 5 more inches on both sides to be there. I still need add to the top and bottom some to get where it need to be. If I had a sewing machine I could work on this faster. But I would not want to machine sew this together. Just because of how hand sewing / stitching makes this look. When I get this to the right size I will start of the second half. After the second half is done I will cut both halves into a shape of an egg. Once there in the shape of an egg I will hand stitch both sides together then stuff it. It will be a big plushy egg. While working on this I need to iron this a few times with a bunch of steam. This will be the he biggest finished product thing I have made. I have add one thing bigger out of clay, but it shrunk some while drying and in both firings. The squares and rectangles that do not look straight or a perfect square or rectangle are done on purpose. That will more make sense both halves are stitched and stuffed. Everything you do has to in a way be done on purpose even if you work randomly.

  • I have been playing with the idea of how big this will get. It will be a “plushie” like egg when it is all done. I finally figured how tall and wide I want it to be. So this will be the biggest thing I have made. For how tall I now want it to be, it will be as tall as me. So I am not going to say how big that is. Not that I have a problem with my height. I am just leaving that as a surprise for now. This will have to will have to be as wide as my arm spand is. The that is the widest area of the egg looks right. Even though I know how big I want it to be I will have to make it bigger than That. That will account for the bit of shrinking it will do when I stuff the inside of the egg. This will be just one side of the eggs after I am done sewing pieces of fabric together. Also it does not matter low long you to get work done. It just matters if you feel you did your best on it.

  • Part of the process of making art designing how the piece will look. That is even if randomness is part of your process. No mater what you make what you make, it had to look like all the parts were done intentionally. Even though I am making this randomly I am still trying to design what this piece will look up close. What I mean making this piece randomly is that I am not planning which hands get which ceramic glaze color or to number each had will be put up in a specific order. I will choose the number of hand that get the glaze color(s) after I fire them in a kiln. I want this piece to look different from a distance than it will up close. These hands will be make up a wall installation piece. The hands in the picture are not all the hand I need or have all together at the moment. There for working randomly is that I like to post progress about what I am working on but do not want to be easily copied.

  • This is about my process while working on a piece. Every artist, crafter, maker, etc. has their own process of of how they go about making something. Mine has the element of randomness in it. The best was to explain it is to use this piece I am working on. For this I use different fabrics that I cut up into different sized rectangles and squares and hand sew than together. I do not plan out what the size it will be when I cut it out or if it will be a square or rectangle. I just do it. Because of that I have to figure it where a new piece of fabric will fit so I can so it to this. This will eventually be a round egg. Right know I do not know how big I want the egg to be. What you see in the picture is what will be one half of the egg. When I determine how big I want the egg to be I will have to have both halves of the fabric. Because when turning something flat into something round it shrinks a bit in size. At the same time I will have to add an extra inch or so where I will sew both halves together. I will have to think of that when I cut this into the shape of an egg. At the same time of thinking about all of this I look at each fabric to see if it is see-through or not. Normally it would not matter with me. But for this it does. If it is even a bit see-through I fold it enough times till I can not. Then I sew it on. When I iron in between sewing on a few pieces of fabric lets me see where I may need to correct my stitches and where a new piece could fit. I also have to think how and what I will stuff the inside of the egg to make it round. That is my process.

  • I had shown this piece I am working on earlier in the year. But I took a break on making these hands because of my work schedule and then going to Japan. I got back to making more. The second picture is a close up of some of the hands. I am using a press mold that I am using as a slip cast mold. In a moment of a break waiting for a few hands to dry out enough that they can release themselves from the mold I thought about how many hands I would need to make for the idea I have for this. I realized that I need to make another mold or a few more molds with more of each of the hands on them. For this I have four different hands I am making. The mold I am using now I made when I was in college / university. It has five hands. All the hand slots work fine as a press mold. But one of the hands in the mold I designed doesn’t work as a slip cast mold. Right now I can only make all four hands one at a time. Which will take a really long time to make the amount each of the hands I need. So that is why I need to make more molds. Making the molds will be an easy thing to do. This sometimes is just part of the art making process. The reason I need a lot of hands is because I want it that people do not see each individual hand till they get up close.

  • This is a piece I am working on. This will an egg in the end. I am hand stitching or hand sewing different fabrics together. I originally started this before I had gone to Japan. But while I was in Japan a few months ago it was mistakenly thrown in the trash while someone was cleaning. The original version of this is shown in the second picture. Some of the fabrics I am using are one I have hand dyed myself. Some of the fabric I was able to get for free. The blue and white fabric that you can see I had bought while I was in Japan. I now wish I would have bought more fabrics while I was there. The reason I am using different fabrics is because I want the surface of the egg to look just like that. I really want to look like different fabrics stitched together. I do not know yet the size this egg will be. I will decide that when I decide I am done sewing this half and start cutting away some of the fabric to make the egg shape. But this I will need to get more fabrics to use so I can finish. I know where I can get some. Which that in its own leads me to my next post.

  • I will repost just the picture of this so you can zoom in a bit to look at the photograph. I took this photograph few weeks ago. I have a thing for trying to get photographs of homeless people. Because some people make fun of the for and a lot of times treat them inhumanly for being in the situation that they are in. They all have a story about how they got there. They can teach us a thing or two about life if we listen. If I do take a photograph of a homeless person I never make it staged. I just ask if they will let me photograph them. When they say yes I take the photograph as they are. For this I was trying to get a shot of the man looking sad like his dog is. But I could not. He had that happy look the whole time. His sign says “We could really use a miracle.” I think he found something to be his small miracle in a situation that most people would consider one of the most hopeless this they could be in. I wish I could have added what it was. Time we need to be more like him.

  • This is am update post on this painting. I was about to get some yellow paint that I ran out for to water down so it could help the green alien on the crackle paste looks brighter. Because I felt I made the wrong shade. But when I added the black to the crackle paste it made the green look brighter. It looks like the shade of green I had meant to make from the beginning. I am now playing with watered down whit and black to make the black areas of the crackle paste sections look like I has texture that comes through the paint. Not all the texture of the crackle paste is seen again once the paint is applied.
