  • Elio de Angelis🇮🇹 racing the Brabham BT55 at the 1986 San Marino Grand Prix. Designed by Gordon Murray, the BT55 was known for innovative aerodynamics which gave the car great downforce and very low drag, meaning that it was very quick in a straight line. However, in order to achieve such an aerodynamic design the BMW engine had to be tilted and a specially designed gearbox and drivetrain had to be fitted. This caused the car to suffer many reliability problems during the season and the BT55 did not celebrate much success during 1986.

Murray left Brabham to join McLaren at the end of the season and the overall concept of the BT55 seemed to form the basis of the dominant McLaren MP4/4, the car that won 15 of the 16 races in 1988. This has however been disputed by Steve Nichols, the former McLaren head designer, and Jo Ramírez, former team manager, both of whom say that Murray had very little input for the design of the MP4/4.

  • Riccardo Patrese🇮🇹 racing the Brabham BT55 “skateboard” car at the 1986 French Grand Prix, held at Circuit Paul Ricard. As Elio de Angelis🇮🇹 had tragically been killed in an accident while testing the BT55 at the same track less than two months before, a decision was made to race on the shorter “Club” version of the circuit which was much safer due to the slower average speed. Despite this, some car reached speeds of 330 km/h (205 mp/h) down the Mistral straight.

Nigel Mansell🇬🇧 would go on to win the race for Williams, while local hero Alain Prost🇫🇷 (McLaren) finished 2nd and Mansell’s Williams teammate Nelson Piquet🇧🇷 finished 3rd. Patrese finished 7th in the race while Derek Warwick🇬🇧, who had been brought in to replace de Angelis at Brabham, finished 9th.

  • Elio de Angelis🇮🇹 heads out on track in the brand new Brabham BT55 ahead of the opening race of the 1986 season at Jacerepaguá in Brazil. De Angelis was however sadly killed in an accident that occured while he was testing the BT55 at Circuit Paul Ricard less than two months later.

The BT55 struggled with engine and gearbox reliability throughout the 1986 season and only managed two points finishes that year. The designer of the BT55, Gordon Murray, moved over to McLaren following that season and the incredibly dominant McLaren MP4/4 (see third photo), which Murray helped Steve Nichols design, was based on the same aerodynamic concept as the BT55. The MP4/4 won 15 of the 16 races it competed in during the 1988 season and achived 15 pole positions in the hands of Ayrton Senna🇧🇷 and Alain Prost🇫🇷.

  • 📆 #onthisday in 1986, Elio de Angelis lost his life after a shock crash at a Paul Ricard test, in France. 
He drove a Brabham BT55 when the rear wing detached and sent the car flying. The car came to a rest and burst into flames. He only suffered minor injuries, but the sheer amateurishness of the medical teams caused him to slip into a coma. It took 30 mins for an air ambulance to arrive. 
He died of a heart attack the next day due to smoke inhalation. 
After this, a medevac helicopter has been stationed and ready at every F1 race and test session since. Medical centres were also made mandatory at all FIA Grade 1 race circuits. 
Elio's death prompted the FIA to abandon turbo engines at the end of 1988. Turbos were not reintroduced in F1 until 2014. 
Freak accidents like this often remind us of how dangerous F1 really was, and still is. Rest in Peace Elio, godspeed.

Exatamente 30 anos atrás, Ayrton Senna ganhava seu primeiro título mundial de Fórmula 1. A consagração veio a bordo do carro que é considerado o mais dominante de todos os tempos, o @mclaren MP4/4. Assim como o Brabham BT52 de Nelson Piquet sobre o qual falamos semana passada, o McLaren em questão saiu das pranchetas do mago Gordon Murray. 
Ainda nos tempos de Brabham, Murray deduziu que um chassi mais baixo que o usual poderia ter uma melhor penetração aerodinâmica e direcionar melhor o ar até a asa traseira, gerando mais downforce, de forma que o carro tivesse mais velocidade em retas e mais estabilidade em curvas. Assim, concebeu o BT55 para a temporada 1986. O chassi mostrou-se promissor, mas o motor BMW alto demais atrapalhava o fluxo de ar, além de ter sua confiabilidade comprometida devido à posição estranha em que era instalado no compacto Brabham. Já na McLaren, onde chegou em meados de 1987, Murray resolveu insistir no conceito de carro baixo para 1988. Os motores Honda turbo, além de potentes e confiáveis, eram pequenos e perfeitos para o projeto. O MP4/4 ficou pronto apenas poucas horas antes da primeira sessão de testes pré-temporada, quando Senna e Alain Prost viram o carro pela primeira vez. Apesar de estranhar a posição quase horizontal de pilotagem em um primeiro momento, Prost baixou seu tempo com o antigo MP4/3 em dois segundos logo de cara.
A combinação de carro de outro planeta com pilotos geniais não poderia dar mais certo: com 15 vitórias em 16 corridas, liderança de 97% das voltas do campeonato e pelo menos 1,5 segundo de vantagem por volta sobre qualquer outro carro em qualquer pista, a McLaren dominou completamente a temporada de 1988. O campeonato se transformou em um duelo particular entre Senna e Prost. Ao vencer em Suzuka em corrida de recuperação memorável, Senna garantiu o título sobre o rival com uma corrida de antecedência e ajudou a consagrar o McLaren MP4/4 como o melhor carro que a Fórmula 1 já viu.

1986 ГП Бразилия, трасса Жакарепагуа. Впервые на старт вышел сверхнизкий  Brabham BT55 BMW. Он стал на 28 см ниже модели 1985 года. Это было сделано с целью создания большей прижимной силы, чтобы на заднее крыло попадал чистый поток воздуха, не возмущенный горбом кузова за спиной пилота. Специально с целью реализации этого замысла двигатель BMW был положен на бок на 72 градуса. Изменили и посадку пилота - гонщики  команды теперь фактически лежали в машине. Это позволило правильно организовать воздушный поток в области заднего антикрыла. Однако изменения негативно повлияли на надежность машины.   • 📆 #onthisday in 1986, Elio de Angelis lost his life after a shock crash at a Paul Ricard test, in France. 
He drove a Brabham BT55 when the rear wing detached and sent the car flying. The car came to a rest and burst into flames. He only suffered minor injuries, but the sheer amateurishness of the medical teams caused him to slip into a coma. It took 30 mins for an air ambulance to arrive. 
He died of a heart attack the next day due to smoke inhalation. 
After this, a medevac helicopter has been stationed and ready at every F1 race and test session since. Medical centres were also made mandatory at all FIA Grade 1 race circuits. 
Elio's death prompted the FIA to abandon turbo engines at the end of 1988. Turbos were not reintroduced in F1 until 2014. 
Freak accidents like this often remind us of how dangerous F1 really was, and still is. Rest in Peace Elio, godspeed.
