  • Today is 21 November 2019. Happy 95th birthday to Christopher Tolkien.
When I first reading The Silmarillion in 2005, the texts "Edited by Christopher Tolkien" didn't attract my attention. My only concern was, "How the heck can I read this?" My English skill at was subpar and the book was not a light reading. But the first descriptions attracted my attention, and I dove straight to the opening chapter. I got swept away by the beautiful descriptions of Valar. I got emotional in a lot of parts while wondering whether specific words in a sentence should be a verb or noun. I often went back a couple of pages because I lost track. One year I spent to finish that book, but how satisfying it was.
.
.
It took a few years before I read other works edited by Christopher. A friend offered to buy and send me The Lost Tales and the Unfinished Tales. Another new experience, because that was the first time I read Tolkien-related books with notes and commentaries. "There is something more than reading the stories!" I thought. Again, the name Christopher Tolkien appeared, and I started to pay attention. It was also the first time I saw the evolution of works, something that I somewhat understand from a creative process, but never actually saw until I read The History of Middle-earth series.
.
.
I started to browse deeper about Tolkien. I hunted down other Tolkien books. I read biographies, letters, and some nonfiction books by Tolkien scholars, slowly realizing the huge role Christopher has played on keeping Tolkien's legacy alive.
.
.
I rarely made a lengthy post for someone mainly credited as the editor, but words cannot explain how much I respect Christopher. Internet and swiftly changing conversation in pop culture have resulted in some "interesting" comments about him. But he has shown the dedication not all can imitate. Even after receiving the Bodley Medal in 2016, along with Prof. Mary Beard and Dame Maggie Smith, he stays humble.
.
.
Happy birthday, Christopher. Being unable to meet you in real life kinda hurts, but hopefully, you realize the huge appreciation from readers like me.

  • Mathematical genius and codebreaker Alan Turing was born #OnThisDay in 1912.
🏳️‍🌈 💻
One of Britain’s most original thinkers, Turing made his first major contribution to science at just 24 with his paper ‘On Computable Numbers’.
Turing also wrote one of the first practical designs for a stored-program computer, later named ‘Pilot ACE’ and now on display at the Science Museum, that was the fastest machine in its day.
He contributed to breaking the Enigma code in 1941, helping to end WWII. 🏳️‍🌈
💻
Despite these accomplishments, Turing was never fully recognised in his lifetime due to his homosexuality, which was then a crime in the UK.
We now think of him not only as an extraordinary mind, but also as an LGBTQI+ hero.
🏳️‍🌈
💻
We explore the story of Turing and the Bletchley Park codebreakers in our upcoming, free exhibition Top Secret.
