  • I’m really enjoying reading my way through the Penguin Classics Collection 📚 I’m halfway through the short story “The Marquise of O—“ (1808) by Heinrich Von Kleist ☺️ I know very little about the background of this author, but it seems to be “transposed from true events”? I think...
.
A widowed Marquise in Italy is raped by five soldiers, but rescued by a Russian Count, who in turn after the fighting calms down, implicates the rapists which has them all shot [executed].
.
Then he, himself, is supposedly killed in action. But miraculously returns to the Marquise (who as a widow now lives with her father) and asks the family for her hand in marriage.
.
The family is in shock because even though the count saved her life, they feel it’s moving too fast and that they should get to know one another better so they invite him to stay as a guest in their home after his trip to Naples.
.
The count however explains that when they presumed he was dead, he was actually fighting for his life, wounded, and seeing visions of the Marquise as a swan (he gets a bit graphic in his description at the dinner table) and forgoes his military duties to begin staying with the family immediately. He is crazy about her.
.
At this point the Marquise is a bit taken back, both “attracted and not attracted” and reminds her family that after her late husband passed away she vowed to never enter a second marriage and to never fall in love again. Her mother encourages her to consider his offer though, because they as parents see many good qualities in this man very quickly.
.
That’s where I left off... however there’s one more catch.
.
In the opening of the story, she’s placing personal ads looking for this count... because she’s found... that she’s pregnant... symptoms which were occurring one month after the rape.
.

  • book_106 : Aesop

  • Dziś przychodzę do Was z kolejnym debiutem literackim, którego bez wątpienia możemy umieścić w gatunku fantastycznym przeznaczonym dla młodzieży.

What I love about books: if they are written well -but more importantly, from the heart - they reveal truths that cannot be hidden. No sleeve, no book cover is able to hide the true beauty in every word written upon the pages of our beloved books. We see the best, the worst, and even the extraordinary: that ordinary people are capable of beautiful things.

Let’s do something beautiful in this world. Read and share these lessons with the world starting with our hearts on our sleeves! 💞

Abrazo enorme ♡

  • These are a few of my favorite things. ✨⁣
⁣
Finally got some Christmas decor up in our house & it’s making me so happy! I’ve been LOVING this book which is also making me so happy! It’s a little cheesy, but honestly that’s exactly what I want around this time of year. It definitely reads like a hallmark movie! ⁣
⁣
Fun fact: this is the only holiday mug I own... I know I know. 😭 But I gave it to my grandma when I was young. She’s no longer with us & I think of her every time I use it. ♥️

  • Cari Readers! 😄🇮🇹🇬🇧
.
La conoscete?
L’avete letta? .

A beautiful alien saga, yes, that's right!
.
SPOILER !!!
.
A particular thing about this series, apart from there being some very peculiar, original and also very good aliens, which unfortunately are abused by those in the government who know about them.
Is that the protagonist Katy, is a reader and blogger!
Yes, exactly!
When I started it years ago, I smiled and found myself very much in her.
Katy is a crazy lover of books, almost every weekend she gets packages 👇👇

  • This is a collection of L.M. Montgomery’s Christmas stories. Despite the title, only one is about Anne, but it’s one of the best stories ever: Matthew seeing to it that Anne has a fine dress with puffed sleeves for her Christmas concert. That story had me in tears, thinking about Anne and Matthew and Marilla and how they all needed one another. Then, I pictured Richard Farnsworth’s Matthew in the Wonderworks Anne of GG mini-series and remembered watching with my mom, sisters, and cousins and I was really overcome. The stories that follow are treasures as well — old-fashioned tales about people showing kindness and generosity to neighbors and strangers, stories about forgiveness and hope. Basically, this short audiobook — enjoyed via @askelmhurst and @hoopladigital — was just what I needed during this busy season. #book #booklife #bookstagram #reading #readingrocks #audiobook #audiobookstagram #audiobooksrock #lmmontgomery #puffedsleeves #anneofgreengables

  • I cannot say how much I love this story. I first read it a couple years ago and fell in love; now I’m listening to the audiobook (that’s how I revisit most of my classics nowadays). North and South takes the best aspects of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens and weaves them into something so powerful and beautiful.

What’s an oft-overlooked classic you think should get more love?

  • I cannot say how much I love this story. I first read it a couple years ago and fell in love; now I’m listening to the audiobook (that’s how I revisit most of my classics nowadays). North and South takes the best aspects of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens and weaves them into something so powerful and beautiful.

  • Ok first off LOOK AT THIS GORGEOUS EDITION FROM @illumicrate ! 💡 I love naked books and it is so perfect for this book. The Starless Sea is an ode to books and imagination. ✨ The entire book is beautifully written and immerses you in such a fantastically magical world. Morgenstern has such a talent for minute detail and using those specifics to fully bring you into the world. There are so many nods to great books, and I was geeking out any time I found references to places in NYC I know or books I’ve read. 🙌🏻 •

I especially loved the stories within the story. While you’re reading Zachary’s story, there are also experts from the magical books he is interacting with. 📖 This allows you to feel involved in the story and piece together mysteries that you wouldn’t have otherwise. I really just love the tone in general as well, if you liked the unique tone and phrasing in Night Circus, good news it continues here! 🗡

The only negative I have for this book is the absolute brain melting ending. Maybe I’m just not smart enough to wrap my mind around it, but it was super confusing and the world just kind of implodes at once. 🤯 Suddenly there’s no semblance of a recognizable world and it is truly a new dimension. Without spoiling, I also don’t understand the need for Zachary’s big destiny to happen the way it did. I’m also a romantic and would have liked a less mentally traumatizing ending for two of the characters even though a happy ending is implied... •

But seriously this book is art, and if you blow through it you’re doing it wrong. 🔑 I’m a speed reader and wasn’t expecting it to take so long to read this, but I’m glad I took my time and read it on pace because it’s just so FULL and it would be a shame to miss any of the details. 🐝 “Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly.” Well this is one of those Sir Francis Bacon!

  • Chapter 12. She wanted to die, but she also wanted to live in Paris. Which one do you think she chose?
⁣
First off, a hint: 😱 Happy Birthday, #EdvardMunch. That’s it. He has actually nothing to do with this post today. I just wanted to use the emoji they made in his honor. On his birthday...
⁣
Ahem. Now! Here’s the real thing. Who wanted to die and also live in Paris? That’s definitely a tricky question, but we’re talking about her, the girl who lived in a convent and dreamed of love and marriage as the solution to all her problems. She marries her father’s young dull doctor. But she gets disappointed. When she realizes she isn’t as happy as she wanted to be, she decides to borrow some money, f her life, and tryst around like crazy in the village, singing, to any law clerk or neighbor, “fly me to the moon, let me play among the stars...” (happy Birthday #FrankSinatra — I’m glad I’ve found this link here). And I’m kidding, she didn’t sing that song...
⁣
And I may be exaggerating, too. There were only two guys, actually, one of them got bored and left, the other one just kept lying all the time. But, you know who I’m talking about...
⁣
Yea, I’m talking about Emma. MADAME BOVARY! And it’s also #GustaveFlaubert’s birthday today, so... He was born on December 12, 1821. Sagittarius, I know. Smart, caring, deep, honest, wild. But also impatient, careless, boastful, attention-seeking, and brutal. You know the type. I know, I’m a Virgo, honest af, judgemental a-even-more-f.
⁣
But this has nothing to do with zodiac signs. Although I think Emma was definitely Aries. But who cares?
⁣
This post is about the book I’m re-reading. Flaubert’s masterpiece. Dude, he was crazy. Deeply committed to finding the best words to describe what he believed was indescribable. How? He thought that language was often an inadequate medium for expressing emotions and ideas, so he created a story and characters that just couldn't express themselves well enough since their very childhood. Brilliant. Lies after lies and the truth never comes up even when it does. That’s what you should expect from this amazing classic.
⁣
☕️ Now, question: do you believe that words are not enough sometimes?

  • Have you ever had a dog?

This is not my puppy (sobs) but she visited so I had to take pictures with her.
