  • It's been a very very very big week of boat building and I finally got the new fleet on the website!
Ships are finding Captains very quickly so Matey's if you were thinking of gifting a special someone in your life a Miniature Ship for Christmas then I'd recommend having a look now to avoid any disappointment 💛

  • "Arcitectura Navalis Mercatoria by Frederik Henrik af Chapman was first published more than 200 (250 now ) years ago in 1768. This bicentenary edition of the famous work is dedicated to the memory of this great pioneer of Naval architecture who do so much to turn shipbuilding into a science." This book contains the original work plus the "Tractat on Skepps-Byggeriet" ( Treatise on Ship Building), completed several years later. The Tractat is not just explanatory text to go with the plans contained in the Arcitectura Navalis Mercatoria. It is virtually a manual on design of various types of craft of that period. A very interesting book with more than 60 fold out ship plans.

  • Here's a thing we've wanted to try for a long time, but never really had a legitimate reason to aside from amusing ourselves. Well, when your plank stock is at the shipyard and the big planer is a few miles away at a different location it's an ideal moment to give it a whirl. We were very pleased with the results!

  • One of the most important things I've learnt in my 44 years in business as a boatbuilder, was that I had to learn how to get through the lows.
The boating industry is often the first to cop it during times of financial recessions and downturns. But it always recovers. Those properties of mine have saved my butt enough times for me to be able to tell you something that changed my life: "Whatever happens, when you get to the end of you career don't end up with just a whole heap of worn out power tools to show for it." So make the plan to invest. Start now.

  • Laid the glass last night, trimmed some of the edges (transom needs to be cleaned up and the excess pleats need to be cut). Should be able to get this thing laminated soon! Fairing and paint will follow. 😎☕️

  • This is Engineer Abdullah, one of the last Dhow builders and designers in Bahrain. He works with his eye and his hands, building the boats you see behind him, from a sketch and scale model. The keel which he stands on here is laid first, by hand. A solid sixty foot piece of mahogany or teak that supports the hulls frames. ‘This is the most important part of the boat build’ he tells me. ‘If this is not perfect, she will not be perfect. I have never got this bit wrong, never’. This is dying art. There are only a handful of the old builders left and it’s saddening to think it could just vanish, leaving just the hulls on the shoreline.
