- Time for some ingredient knowledge 🎓… Today we're going to focus on a tricky one.
Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) ... sounds so innocent! ❓So WHY is it Blacklisted?
Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) has been at the center of preservative controversy for as long as it has been in the industry. It is marketed as a "natural preservative" however, it is commonly contaminated by synthetic preservatives such as triclosan, benzethonium chloride, and methylparaben. 🙅🏼♀️ Crunchi has chosen not to utilize GSE in any of our products due to the ongoing debate.
This one is sneaky, and is commonly used in cosmetics marketed as "natural" ... much like "Japanese honeysuckle" it sounds totally harmless! I am so grateful that we don't have to be label detectives to have full confidence in ALL Crunchi ingredients!
When reading labels, always look out for GSE along with these other commonly used toxic ingredients in “naturally” marketed cosmetics...
❌ Fragrance/parfum, phenoxyethanol, talc, PEGs, EDTA, BHT, mineral oil, Japanese honeysuckle, and loose powder titanium dioxide.
Has this one snuck by you in the past?

A contaminant that is not required to be listed on an ingredient label in the US. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It is a by-product of the ethoxylation process in which carcinogenic ethylene oxide is reacted with other ingredients to make them less harsh on the skin. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) has classified 1,4-dioxane as likely to be carcinogenic to humans. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The FDA studies showed that 1,4-dioxane can penetrate human skin. 1,4-dioxane can be reduced or removed from a product through the vacuum-stripping process. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
However, independent tests show that many manufacturers fail to do so. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
FOUND IN: Products that create suds (such as shampoo, liquid soap, bubble bath), hair relaxers, others
Environmental Working Group’s analysis suggests that 97 percent of hair relaxers, 57 percent of baby soaps and 22 percent of all products in Skin Deep may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Independent lab tests co-released by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics in 2007 showed that popular brands of children’s bubble bath and body wash contained 1,4-dioxane.
