  • Flexibility of Heterocercal Tails: What Can the Functional Morphology of Shark Tails Tell Us about Ichthyosaur Swimming?
By

Fig. 10 Comparison of ceratotrichia distribution and orientation between six canonical specimens, at 50% of the dorsal lobe length. Cross-sections are shown on the left of each panel with neural spines shown in blue, centra in green, hemal spines in purple, regions of ceratotrichia in gray, with other connective tissue stippled. The right of each panel is a corresponding lateral view showing regions of ceratotrichia in gray with lines to denote the angle of ceratotrichia in that region. The angle of ceratotrichia and degree to which they overlap the neural spines varies between the a) dusky, b) blue shark, c) the porbeagle, and d) the sandtiger. In e) the thresher shark, there are three distinct regions of ceratotrichia. The first region (i) of ceratotrichia lies just dorsal to the neural spines and immediately under the skin, and the ceratotrichia in this region run parallel to the long axis of the tail. The second region (ii) is deep to the first, meets at the midline above the neural spines, and extends in an elongate crescent to terminate just under the skin above the middle of the neural tube. The ceratotrichia in the second region are sharply angled posteriorly. The third section of ceratotrichia (iii) is a single row of widely spaced ceratotrichia that lie next to the centrum (dotted line—deep to muscle) and run roughly parallel to the long axis of the tail.

Besides locating their prey 🐸 and having an active predatory behavior, how do they dominate their prey? Venom? ☣️ Well, yes, they are mildly venomous...but really just a little 😅. Unlike most "famous" snakes 🐍, these colubrids are rear-fanged (their fangs are at the back of the maxila instead of at the front end). So...how do they envenomate their prey? In my new blog post (link in bio) I tell you more details about their behavior, venom composition, and why I was totally fine after the day one of these bit me. 🤷‍♀️ . | Strange mixture of Renaissance portrait with landscape in window, plus chiaroscuro style, plus a "Martini guy" [ Translation Note: "Martini guy" is a reference about a 90s Martini vermouth commercial, which featured a sex symbol model characterized by its sunglasses and its general style, very proud, as well as a gesture with his lips ] |

| From its sacred pillar, a demigod try to explain and convince a little fox about the dangers related with habituation to man (who irresponsibly has given some food and has played with), and that its role of wild predator should give it wary of man and make it run away, into the forest [ NOTE: although the tone of the text is something humorous, the demigod, in this case, had quite reason ] |
