“Create whatever starts a revolution in your heart”-Liz Gilbert.

If you are disappointed in our governments’ climate inaction, now is the time to speak – and nothing speaks to politicians like votes do.

@annarose_richards wrote an impassioned letter to her local MP and is urging others to do the same. The letter (which can be downloaded on her profile) outlines the environmental concerns that face Australia, politely demands urgent action from her local MP, and makes her voting position clear as dependent on environmental policies.

A single letter may not change anything – but thousands will. Politicians can’t and won’t ignore the call of voters, so it’s time to make our priorities clear to them. Read Anna’s full post and get the template letter here on her Instagram.

  • Coming back for our third semester in a row, our Ban Single Use Plastics campaign is coming back stronger than ever to continue our fight to create a cleaner and safer environment for all of us. It is no secret that we have a plastics problem in our country. Our campaign is working to create and pass a bag ban in the city of New Brunswick, making it the first large city in Middlesex County to pass a plastics ban! If you are passionate about our environment and our current sustainability problems, come learn about how to #BanTheBag at our table tomorrow at the Douglass Student Center from 2-4 for trivia. And mark your calendars for our campaign kickoff meeting on February 6th, in the Multipurpose room in the College Ave Student Center!

"... avoiding the use of plastic... reflect a generous and worthy creativity which brings out the best in human beings. Reusing something instead of immediately discarding it, when done for the right reasons, can be an act of love which expresses our own dignity." LS:211.

  • Disposable shopping bags were introduced in the 1970s to make shopping easier. Now, the average American uses 6 per week. That’s 1.8 billion bags EVERY WEEK. Daaaang.

Most of you probably own a collection of reusable bags (if not, I recommend @bagpodz). But do you remember to use them? The environmental toll created during manufacturing and shipping reusable bags outweighs the good if we never use them. So let’s get in the habit.

First, designate a good spot in your home for your reusable bags. Somewhere easily accessible and visible is best. Or leave some in your car, stuffed in your backpack, diaper bag, stroller, etc. While you are training yourself, hang one on the door as a reminder. You wouldn’t leave the house without your phone or wallet so start thinking of your reusable bags the same way.

When you forget your bags, hold yourself accountable. If you realize it as you’re leaving home, go back and get them. If you leave them in the car while you’re shopping, take your purchased items, unbagged, to your car and bag them there. Or if you forget your bags until it’s too late, I dare you to take your stuff, unbagged, all the way home. It could be the trick to get you not to forget again.

Reusable shopping bags aren’t just for groceries. Take them for every kind of shopping. They can replace any kind of shopping bag or take-out bag. My @bagpodz bags are super compact and easily stuff into a pocket or purse so I can take them anywhere.

If you find yourself with single-use bags, please reuse or recycle them. But recycling plastic bags comes with issues… the cost to recycle plastic bags outweighs their value, so most recycling facilities will not take them.

Most recycling centers ask that we don’t put them in our curbside bins. They clog the sorting machinery and cause expensive jams, which slow down the processing line and recycling efficiency. So, collect your plastic bags separately and return them to any grocery store along with all other stretchy plastic bags and films. Watch my saved story “Bags Recycle ?” to learn more about recycling plastic bags and films... because it can be very confusing.

  • Yes China! 🇨🇳⁣
⁣
Non-degradable bags will be banned in major cities by the end of 2020 and in all cities and towns by 2022.⁣
⁣
The restaurant industry will also be banned from using single-use straws by the end of 2020 and must reduce the use of single-use plastic items by 30%.⁣
⁣
Hotels have been told that they must not offer free single-use plastic items by 2025.⁣
⁣
As one of the worlds largest consumers of single use plastics, this is a BIG move for China 👏🏼⁣

  • “Plastic bags were an every day part of my childhood. From the thousands that came home with us over the years to the hundreds I’d see blowing down the street or hanging in the trees, they were just normal. I didn’t know the world any other way.

Banning plastic bags might seem like a small step given the scale of the problem. But now that I’m almost 30 in a town that has banned them completely, I had no idea how different the world could be without them. I can’t describe the sense of FREEDOM I get raising a child on a street that doesn’t have plastic bags blowing into our yard or clogging up the storm drains.

So you know what? Instead of balling up thin plastic bags into a kitchen drawer after unloading the car, my daughter gets to hang hers on a hook by the door for next time. Coming home with a trunk full of plastic would be so strange to her because her canvas bag is her buddy. She picks out her tangerines for school & packs them into something that’s her’s with a sense of pride. It makes the ‘grocery shopping with mom’ part of growing up so much more fun!”

  • A lovely day out at Healesville Sanctuary today learning all we can about the amazing ways @zoosvictoria are fighting extinction, educating visitors and saving lives of some of our poor bushfire affected animals.
We pledged to never release balloons instead only realise bubbles. Stood under a 200 year old trees, visited the animal hospital and enjoyed seeing the tassie devils play and interact.
It was a reminder of how important and vulnerable our animals are and how important it is for us all to help them. But we can all choose to plant as many trees, natives plants and seeds as possible. As well as find ways to reduce our carbon emissions, pledge to never use or buy another balloon, plastic straw or single use disposable anything again. Never use another plastic bag, compost, recycle, reuse anything and everything and enjoy getting back in touch with nature. #pledgetosave #animals #zoosvictoria #wastefree #fightingextinction #plantplants #notoballoons #banthebag #banballoons #balloonshurtmarinelife

It makes me so happy knowing that if you offer people an easy alternative to plastic they are willing to make changes. Check out the full range on our website 🍃🌱🌿

  • This may be the most boring dish on the internet but I wanted to share it because I grew those tomatoes!! ❤🍎
•
All I talk about now is how much I love gardening. This summer I've been growing tomatoes and they have just exploded with fruit. I fill a small cereal bowl every few days and they've been great snacks 😊
•
This dish is one I just threw together for the sake of lunch. It's is olive oil, garlic, dried chilli, and cherry tomatoes. Super quick and easy, especially if you are feeling carb hungry 🍝

  • Both the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment has announced that China will ban plastic bags in all of China’s major cities by the end of THIS year. By 2022, they will be banned in all towns and cites in China.

Unfortunately, fresh produce markets willl be exempt from the ban until 2025.

Furthermore, the commission states that all towns and cities in China must reduce the consumption of single-use plastic items in the restaurant industry by 30% in the next five years.

But what about the rest of the plastic China produces? In a 2010 study conducted by Jenna Jambeck, an assistant professor of environment engineering at the University of Georgia, China is reported to dump  between 1.3 million and 3.5 million tons of plastic waste into the ocean each year.

According to SCMP, China is responsible for producing one third of the plastic waste polluting our oceans.

Back in 2008, China implemented a nationwide ban on retailers distributing bags free of charge, so now it seems they are taking it a step further. But is it enough?

How about the plastic products and packaging they export? When will that be phased out?
