  • I had such a nice day today!

After a few months of not seeing each other, Alma and I had a much needed catch-up! We tacked up Scarlett and Brave and ventured out into the woods.

I've not had much time to dedicate to Scarlett recently, and she almost told me off for it! The first 10 minutes or so was just her messing around, leaping forwards and then refusing to move. God, that sassy mare 😂. We eventually made up and she decided she could, in fact, walk alongside Brave normally. That poor boy was just confused, he kept glancing at Scarlett and trying to be friendly but she was having none of it and stuck her nose in the air.

I love Scarlett but sometimes she's just ... 😂. I think I should work on conditioning her a bit and allowing her to get out more as she's just getting crabby. Hopefully we can enter another endurance ride soon!

Alma and I chatted about everything and nothing, it was so good to see her again and we made plans! We ended up at Mistfall Lake and let the ponies splash about in the water. Brave made a little game of trying to soak Scarlet and I as much as possible! 🌊💦 Alma couldn't stop laughing as we were swamped in the mini tsunami. All of a sudden Brave started dropping to his knees, as if to roll, and then it was my turn to laugh. Payback! Alma had to jump off and quickly pull him up so he didn't roll! Alma's soggy boots were the joke for the entire ride back.
Squelch squeeelch 😂 💦👢

  • The Final Day of our Epic Endurance Ride!

Today was both a harrowing and celebratory event. You see, the ride route was set to travel through the same area that was burned by the Greydew Wildfire a few weeks ago... Revisiting the site brought back some traumatic memories.

Scarlett and I were both shattered this morning. This 4 day event has really taken a toll on us both - everythibg hurts and aches but we were determined to finish! I can only thank my specialised tack that I'm not in even more pain - when riding in English stirrup irons you can literally lose all feeling in your feet! The weather today looks better than yesterday, but we're going up high! I dressed up with a thick jumper, comfy leggings, fluffy boots and a windproof face warmer scarf!

We set off from Crescent Moon Village at 6am, we'll need a lot of time to complete today's challenging route! We've opted to go over the mountains, as it will cut a bit of the time. Scarlett and I have done a lot of conditioning prior to this, and with the mountains around Mistfall I think we can handle the slopes.

We walked out of Crescent Moon Village, heading up over the stone bridge and began climbing. To start with was a long, gentle incline - you must be careful on these whilst Endurance Riding and don't let the gentle slope fool you. I kept Scarlett in check and to make sure she didn't steam up the hill and wear herself out. She was huffing and puffing by the time we made it to the top - but boy the views were worth it! I felt like we were on top of the world. It was ever so slightly misty up there on the mountaintop and a brisk breeze whistled past my ears. I love the amazing places that endurance takes you. 🏞

We trotted through the flat mountain pass, admiring the scenery. This mountain must be volcanic, as we passed some bubbling hot springs. There was a slight smell of sulphur in the air, basically it smelt like rotten eggs! We carefully navigated the steep drops and rocky underfoot. We actually had to jump down across a small chasm at some point! Scarlett was ever so brave, she was almost cocky trying to show off. We lept down and I had to quickly gather Scarlett back up as she stumbled.

  • It was a wild and wet one today!

Day 3 of the Watcher of the East Endurance Ride! After the scorcher yesterday I was hoping for some more nice weather.. But nope! It was overcast and ominously grey once I opened the curtains of my hotel room in New Hillcrest. Oh well, I'm no fair weather rider!
I was up and in the barn at 7am. I stick with the rule of "Never try anything new at a ride", so I kept to our trusted feed schedule. I happily gave Scarlett her breakfast of beet pulp mash, humming all the way.I can't wait for another day on the trails! She greedily stuffed her face and ate like a machine. That girl 😂.
.
Since the weather wasn't looking up, I put on my long red waterproof coat, hoping it would just cover my breeches enough to keep my legs dry! I really need to invest in some waterproof trousers... After Scarlett ate her breakfast I went about preparing her for the day, grooming and checking her over for sores. Next I tacked up, at least today Scarlett seemed a bit more enthusiastic and seems to have realised that we'll be on the trail for a few days!
I mounted at 8:30 and was ready at the starting line. Today we are riding through the Mirror Marshes, then up along the fields outside New Hillcrest until we reach Butter Hill Manor. Here we will break for lunch before continuing on our ride to Crescent Moon Village, via Shipwreck Shores. I'm planning on keeping it slow today, to let Scarlett recover before the monstrous ride tomorrow!

We set off at a steady walk, and in true Jorvik fashion the foggy morning changed to a light misting of rain to add a bit of shine to the trees. As we entered the Mirror Marshes the fog closed in on us, obscuring any view past 50 metres. We made sure to stay well on the path, away from any potential boggy bits! I've ridden through bog before, and let me tell you it isn't fun! It's a nerve-wracking experience , all you can do it pick your route then confidently push forward and pray. Thankfully we didn't encounter any bog. I allowed Scarlett to trot on along the misty trail, stopping by a nearby stream for a drink. By now it was definitely raining. In fact, pouring and we were not even close to the midway point!

  • Never forget to have fun!

As you can see from the photo above, Scarlett and I are VERY serious whilst at rest stops.

ANYWAY... On with the story!

As you may know, today was Day 2 of the Watcher of the East Endurance Ride. Having arrived in Fort Pinta last night, Scarlett and I were well rested after our shorter ride yesterday. Today the route followed the coastline of South Hoof Peninsula, briefly resting for lunch at the Hermit's Cottage before carrying on through the Sunset Isles.

I awoke in my rented room in Fort Pinta and checked the weather - looks like another sunny day! After showering, and slurping down some coffee to wake me up I stumbled into the stables to check on Scarlett. Other endurance riders were already preparing! Opps, better get a move on! I swung open Scarlett's door and she just gave me a look of "Why are you here again so early". You'd think she'd clue onto the fact seeming as she's not in her home stable, but we've never done a multi-day endurance ride! She usually gets away with a rest day afterwards, so she was not prepared for when I started tacking her up! If looks could kill.... Someone please save me from Scarlett! I love her but she can be terrifying sometimes. 😂

I checked everything was ready, double and triple checking my saddlebags. I've switched out her saddlepad today for a black one, as the hot weather yesterday caused my red one to be covered in sweaty junk! Ew. I also attached a red front saddlebag, to carry extra snacks and electrolytes as today's ride is longer!

We boarded the route 4 ferry to South Hoof at 7am. Everyone was chattering excitedly, the ride over was lovely and peaceful as we watched the sun rise over the waters. Soon enough the high cliffs of South Hoof were looming on the horizon, it's almost time!

Once we docked and disembarked, it was time to go! I mounted up and we were off on leg 2!

  • Today's the day! Scarlett and I completed Phase 1 of the Watcher of the East Endurance Ride!
.
.
Today promised to be a warm one, with the sunshine burning off the mist in the early hours of the morning. I was up and getting Scarlett ready at 6am, today is actually a fairly relaxed start as it's the shortest distance. I planned out our timings last night, how long it will take to reach each checkpoint and therefore the speed we should keep up! We're aiming to average 7mph! Scarlett was whinnying right until I got her breakfast! I packed my lunch, stopwatch, GPS, first aid kit, easyboot and hoof pick in our saddlebags while waiting for her to eat. Then it was onto grooming and tacking up. I've decided to keep using the bright red Specialized Euro-Light saddle as it seems to suit both Scarlett and me!

We were waiting at the starting line at 8am, you could just see streams of sunlight appearing behind the castle. I hand walked Scarlett for a good 10 minutes before mounting up. She was quite fidgety with pre-ride energy - picking up on the emotions of all the other horses and turmoil happening around us . She even threw in a few leaps just to check I was sitting secure! 😂 Soon the starting bell went off and Scarlett charged forward! Whoa girl, we have a lot of miles to cover - let's keep it in check!

We managed to slow to a trot by the end of the Castle Driveway, settling into a more relaxed pace. Ride your own ride. Last endurance race we got caught up with the front-runners for a few miles, but managed to settle and still come first. Once Scarlett gets her head in the game she's good to go! I can't wait to see how she fares over this multi-day ride as it will really reveal whether she thrives throughout the week, or if she baulks and prefers single-day rides.

This part of Silverglade isn't particularly scenic, but I enjoyed gazing off towards the mountains in the distance. We routed past Silverglade Village, heading east towards the crossroads. The sound of birdsong lulled us into a steady rhythm, we even saw some deer in the edges of Hollow Woods! 🦌

  • Pre-ride vet check for our Endurance Race!
.
.
Well this is certainly the fanciest location we've ever completed a vet gate at... I was so sceptical when the stewards invited us INSIDE the castle, but seems they've got the entrance hallway all fitted out for this event!

After a bite to eat for lunch, we queued for vetting. I love meeting everyone at these events so I chatted people while waiting 💜. Soon the vet called our number and we were up!

I was nervous as we stepped inside; I was eyeing the huge, scary horse eating red-carpet! I thanked all my lucky stars when Scarlett stepped on without batting an eyelash. Phew. This sassy queen sure picks her moments though, which just means she's saving it up for later!
The lovely vet examined Scarlett, starting with her eyes and teeth and then running her hand along her back and legs, picking her feet up. Next she took Scarlett's pulse using a stethoscope. I always stand back and let the vet do their thing here - as even fiddling with your horses nose will make them to take uneven breaths and cause their heart rate will fluctuate. Luckily all my ground training with Scarlett has paid off and she stood relaxed, while still keeping an eye on what the lady was doing back there! Scarlett's heart rate came back more than fine, at 37 it was well under the maximum limit of 64bpm.

Next we had to trot out 30m, taking us outside and down the driveway. She trotted up nicely, I had control whilst still maintaining an active trot. Wohoo! Passed with straight A's! Finally I weighed myself and my tack and we were free to go!

After our vet check was complete, I let Scarlett back into her stall with some dinner! You always gotta feed after vetting, as eating will raise their pulse rate. There's a buzz around camp at the moment, and we're going to have a barbeque later!

Earlier today I had Scarlett's vaccination certificates checked and collected our route map - which is up above as the second photo. We're ready to go first thing tomorrow morning! I'm nervous as this is our first multi-day ride, but I think we're ready!
Good luck to everyone and see you on the trails!

  • Scarlett and I have arrived in Silverglade!

This morning was a long packing venture - making sure I hadn't forgot anything for our 4 day ride! Electrolytes, check, temporary corral, check, 100 sponges, check.... The list went on and on 😂. Eventually I wrangled everything into the truck, including one prancing Scarlett. She's hyped, I can tell!

The drive from Dundull to Silverglade Village was boring as ever, I just entertained myself playing Yellow Car and various other games. After a couple of hours we were rolling into a small farm near the castle. Let me tell you now, that castle is impressive! I haven't really had chance to explore it before.
I unloaded Scarlett and put her in the stall I've rented for a few days at Steve's Farm - before heaving all the stuff in too 😂. Thank god a few of my friends have offered to drive my things between the checkpoints of this endurance ride and help crew for me.

So tomorrow is the official start of the WotE Endurance Event! The vet check is happening in the castle entranceway! I'm so excited! After I unloaded Scarlett I took her for a walk around to stretch her legs; we decided to take a cheeky selfie with the castle in the background 😉. I'm planning on going for a short ride around Silverglade later this afternoon to get our bearings and settle Scarlett. Right now she's eyes on stalks with all the new sights and smells. She's been nickering at every horse she's seen all afternoon... There's a lot of horses 😂. I know that she'll be fine once we get going though.

Who else is competing in the Endurance Ride this week? :D

  • Strike a pose 😎

Today was a lovely sunny day, so Scarlett and I went out for a long adventure! I thought today I'd try out a Western-style Endurance saddle, that my friend kindly loaned to me! Scarlett seemed to like it, so I'm going to have a tough decision on which saddle to use in our next endurance race, I'll be keeping a close eye for any sign of rubbing!

Anyway, we stayed out for about 4.5 hours, doing some slow-pace conditioning. We ended up by the riding hall and I got off to let Scarlett cool off, that's when I snapped this pic! Whilst at the river I also put our ground-tying training to test and Scarlett stayed put! She's such a good girl 💜 The weather in this region of Jorvik has been unseasonally warm and they haven't had much rain recently, so the river was a lot lower than usual! They seem to be having a regional drought between Golden Hills and the Graydew Mountains. Scarlett and I sure didn't mind today as it was nice and warm for our ride! I love days like this, just you and your horse exploring nature 💕 Scarlett's getting a lot fitter as well, and she's becoming more keen to leave her friends behind and venture out!

I would love to enter Scarlett in our second endurance competition, or competitive trail ride together, so let me know if you see any posters about!

• Today I decided to start teaching Scarlett to ground-tie!

This is a rarely taught skill in English disciplines, so I decided to trek up to the South Mistfall Ranger Station to get a bit of assistance.
You may be wondering, "What is ground tying?".
Well, basically it's teaching your horse to stand still on command when they're not tied to anything. My thinking is that this is a necessary skill for my endurance mount, Scarlett, as you never know when you may need to jump off on the trail! Imagine dismounting to say, help another rider, and then you just see your horses backside disappearing off into the distance 😂. No thanks! It should also help with the figeting problem that Scarlett has when I'm mounting up.

So this morning we headed up to the Ranger Station, it wasn't far, and they taught me how they train the ranger ponies to ground tie! I then tried it out with Scarlett, starting by standing near, facing her and asking her to return to where she was originally standing if she shifted. I'd then reward her for standing still. It took a while for her to get the hang of it, she just wanted to wander off! I got a bit better at anticipating when she'd want to move and she seemed to learn quicker!
After a while she seemed to figure out that life was easier if she just stood still. I then took this opportunity to move away from her. Typical clingy Scarlett decided to follow me, but I caught her before she took more than a few steps. She can be such a sheep sometimes 😂🐑 It was hard to keep her attention on me whilst trying not to prompt her to move! The weight of the leadrope to the ground is a good signal for her to stand. However, we eventually got the hang of it and she stayed still for five minutes!

Next I'll be training her to stand even if I go out of sight or leave her for a while. This skill will be invaluable on the trail and on endurance rides, especially at vetting stations! ---------------------------------------------
.
.
A quick note from me - Thank you all ever so much for 10K followers, I'm both speechless and honoured 💕.

  • Scarlett arrived today!

If you read yesterday's post, then you'll know that I have just bought an Arabian mare - Scarlett Aphroditii. She specialises in endurance, which I hope to compete her in this season.

Scarlett was kindly trailered over to my stable by her previous owners at Goldenleaf Stables this afternoon. Apparently she was fine all the way, though when she got here she basically lept out of the trailer! I think it was just excitement. She then stood there in true Arabian fashion, blowing her nostrils and looking around. I think it will be a good idea to acclimatise her to trailer travel and new places a bit! Anyway, she soon settled once she figured out where she was. I put her in her stable with a haynet and she was content.
This afternoon I decided to introduce her to Pebbles, who will be her paddock-mate. Scarlett just seemed curious, though Pebbles wasn't too sure!! Pebbles is used to her current paddock mates, laid-back ranger ponies - and this new hot-blooded mare freaked her a bit! I calmed Pebbles down with some equine massages before taking her out to the fields. I returned Scarlett to her stable, it's too soon for her to go out!

Anyway, I'm very excited for this season! I'm hosting an Endurance Ride on the 12th December - check out my most recent post!
I think I will bring Scarlett along to get her used to the atmosphere without competing! I'll get to see what's she like in a temporary corral and around the buzz of the competition!

Also, who's excited for the Christmas market arriving in Jorvik tomorrow? 🙋‍♀️

  • The past few days have been amazing! I've been at an Endurance Riding Camp with Alma!

On Saturday we travelled to Goldenhills Stables, on our own, to take part in their annual Endurance Campout! Sadly Lucky has gone back to her previous owner, and I no longer have her on loan, so the camp gladly provided me with a horse! Introducing: Scarlett! Oh she is incredible; I fell in love immediately. A beautiful bright chestnut mare, with the personality to match! She's a talented endurance prospect, she can just keep on going. The camp itself was such a great experience, I met loads of other riders and we spent time conditioning and training the horses. We also had a few workshops learning about horse health, vetting and endurance tack. I've learnt so much this weekend and am so excited to put it to good use! In the evenings we would sit around the campfire, after riding all day, swapping stories and just having a good time! The photos above show me on a conditioning ride with Scarlett on the beach.. we stayed out a bit too long and ended up stargazing! What a magical weekend, it wasn't even cold as it's always warm in Goldenhills!

Anyway, sadly today was the time to leave... I just couldn't bring myself to say goodbye to Scarlett. Turns out that the owner is actually selling quite a few of their Arabians! Before I knew it I was signing the paperwork. So Scarlett is coming home to Dundull tomorrow! Alma took Salem home!

Scarlett is a purebred 11 year old Arabian Mare, born in 2007. Her owner told me a bit about her breeding & name: Since her sire was a chestnut stallion named Adoniis, the filly was named Scarlett Aphroditii. Scarlett since she was chestnut like her dam, Lady Fame, and Aphroditii - because Aphrodite was in love with Adonis. The two ii's because of the two ii's in the Sire's name. She competed in Endurance in the USA before she was imported to Jorvik last year.

This weekend has given me inspiration for my Photo Show - I will be hosting a Christmas Endurance Ride - details coming in the next 2 hours! Thank you guys so much for 5k 💕 Hope to see you at the show!

Im actually not going to do drawings from my hashtag, since its says EDITmeselli🙊, BUT I haven’t done a drawing in a while.. so half way into the editing process I deleted it and started drawing the horse instead✍🏼 I am calling this piece «The Royal Arabian»👑

  • To Finish is to Win. Today we completed our first endurance event!

Alma and I woke up early to prepare for the Edgardale Endurance Ride around Mistfall 🌲 Our horses were vetted last night and we collected our route map at the ride meeting. I rode Lucky, a 10 year old Arabian mare, whilst Alma was riding Misty. I have Lucky on loan at the moment to train and do a few endurance rides with as her rider is currently ill. She's wonderful to ride, a classic Arab who positively floats when she moves. I count on her forward-going nature and adventurous personality when out on the trails. She can be high-strung and gets attached to people very easily though! This is our first endurance event, so it's only an introductory trail of 12 miles, split into two loops.
Alma and I set off on the first loop at 7am, riding steadily into the mountains for several miles. We let the horses drink at the lake and sponged them off. We made it back to Dundull in good time and passed the vet check once they had pulsed down. Then it was off on the second half, ending near the Mistfall boundary! It was great to let them stretch out and enjoy themselves. Overall a fantastic ride and it's really given me a taste of endurance, I love it! Tiring though, I'm ready for bed now! .
.

Have you ever competed in Endurance, or want to try it? .

I adore Endurance as a discipline, as it lets you compete at your own pace - and everyone is a winner. You have your horse and the landscape is yours, find your path 🏞️🏇
