- This is a repost. I had spent twenty minutes on the original description just to post it and not have the description appear, so I'll keep it simpler and somewhat different from the original.
Today marks the 57th anniversary of Mercury-Atlas 7, or MA-7. MA-7 was piloted by Astronaut and US Navy officer Scott Carpenter, flying a spacecraft he had named Aurora 7 into orbit on May 24, 1962. The objectives of the flight were to conduct the second ever manned US orbital spaceflight to make sure John Glenn's first orbital flight was no fluke. Aurora 7 would also conduct minor scientific research. The reputation of the flight and Carpenter himself were tarnished by how the flight went, with Carpenter using almost all of the Reaction Control System (RCS) fuel in the spacecraft from the manual fuel to move the spacecraft and look out the window at the Earth and anything else he wanted to see, which was against the orders from the flight controllers in Mercury Mission Control. The automatic system was completely out of fuel. Carpenter also ended up splashing down 250 miles off target. Carpenter did however solve the mystery of the "space fireflies", which were reported first on John Glenn's flight. The fireflies turned out, however, to simply be ice being hit by sunlight. All of the problems encountered on the flight led to Carpenter becoming the first US astronaut to be rejected from future spaceflights. Carpenter took this in good stride, as to him, one spaceflight was enough. He retired from NASA and the Navy and became an Aquanaut for the Sealab program.

The clearest image of the tadpoles and flaming star nebula. Located within the auriga constellation; a group of stars in the shape of a hexagon. You can see them close to the center of the image. The constellation is home to at least 7 stars with planets.
