  • Here’s a scorpion I mounted on commission last week. This species is relatively large and can reach 3.5 – 5 inches when they meet adulthood. When trying to recognise this scorpion, they are generally black all over with long, robust claws and a fat body.
If you would like a similar specimen please send a direct message.

  • Even as an Ecologist and avid observer of all things natural, I sometimes let my immediate reaction to nuisance ‘pests’ in the garden make me reach for a spray to control them. Very rarely and only ever if these pests are in exponential numbers. HOWEVER......I am taught lessons by nature and by observation every time i’m in my garden. These Hawk moth caterpillars have been ‘going to town’ stripping my Cissus Ellen Danica leaves and leaving giant caterpillar 💩 everywhere. I mixed up some pyrethrum to spray them and before I could do that- observed an Assassin bug nymph killing a small caterpillar. I also saw the deflated body of another caterpillar on the ground underneath the vine- the assassin bug injects the caterpillar with chemicals that liquify the insides so that it can suck up and digest its victim. Needless to say, that taught me a lesson, I didn’t spray anything and just ended up picking off other small caterpillars by hand rather spray them. If I had sprayed the vine, I would have killed these beneficial insects as well. The balance of predator/prey relationships and respect to natural life webs is crucial to understanding ecosystems. We can’t expect our gardens to be pest free and every plant to be intact and 100% healthy and free of holes or chew marks from insect damage. Every living thing on this planet must consume to maintain their bodily functions and stay alive. If we observe and understand the relationships of different species within a garden, we are then better equipped as gardeners to maintain ecologically ‘healthy’ gardens with a balance of different species and relationships. Thank you Assassin bug nymph 🤗

It's a good pet.
I kept 8 specimens alive as pets, but once I decided to leave home for two weeks and left them a piece of chicken. When I came home, there were only 4 of them 😬. So, I should be more responsible.

  • Short Horned Gaudy Grasshopper; 🦗
Scientific name : Neorthacris simulans
It belongs to Pyrgomorphidae family of grasshoppers in the order Orthoptera commonly known as the gaudy grasshoppers. They are short horned, flightless grasshoppers. Pyrgomorphoidea, and contains 29 genera and at least 70 species and subspecies. They do not develop wings and are flightless. Grasshoppers are herbivorous insects. To distinguish them from bush crickets or katydids, they are sometimes referred to as short-horned grasshoppers.

If you love nature, you don't have anything to do and you are feeling alone during the quarantine, try to search for some arthropods within your home. In fact, if you know where to watch, you can find a lot of them! Start from your balcony, where you may find some of them, like ants, hemipterans and spiders (photos 1, 2 and 3). If you find nothing, try to look at the window panes, where you can find flying insects, like dipterans and beetles (photos 4, 5 and 6). If you fail again, look at your home walls, where you can can find other insects, like small beetles and lepidopterans (photos 7 and 8). As a last chance, look in the corners of the walls, where spiders are quite common (photo 9). If you look closely, you will find life around you, and maybe you will feel less alone!

32. Family Passalidae – Bess Beetle

Who do you see?! 😳 Bess beetles look mean, but their jagged jaws and stocky build are adaptations for a wood-boring lifestyle. As is common among wood-eating insects, bess beetle guts harbour microbes that help to break down ingested wood. These beasties are also among the few beetles that live in family units, caring for their young!

As you may notice, for my Insects in the Mist series, we are back to beetles! Following on Friday's rove beetle, enjoy the charismatic scarab superfamily.

Coleoptera: Passalidae: Passalus sp.

  • El vientre del escorpión 𝘉𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘴. 10x, ∅2cm.

27. Family Uraniidae – Scoopwing Moth

Scroll down my profile and revisit the day-flying moth #uranialeilus I posted last year. Now, examine this Scoopwing Moth. This is Urania's nocturnal cousin! Same family, different subfamily and habits. It is not flashy, but has its own kind of flair: Scoopwings are named, obviously, for the intricate scalloping of their forewings. They are predominantly tropical and very hard to spot against a natural background, just like their distant relatives, the geometers or measuring-worm moths.
