  • ¿La primera obra de Juan Martínez Montañés?
.

  • Color is such a powerful lens for art (+ life). The Dessert: Harmony in Red by Henri Matisse 1908. Though commissioned in blue, he painted it over in red. “Where I got the color red—to be sure, I just don’t know, I find that all these things . . . only become what they are to me when I see them together with the color red.” – Matisse

  • Last week, @kellyfcarmody brought in this brand new painting “Friday Night at the American Hotel” which she painted from life, through the window on the hotel’s front porch. The result is a beautifully warm, lively interior scene of fashionable figures. The color palette and tone of the painting immediately reminded us of interior scenes by #PierreBonnard Swipe to see an example of a similarly composed interior “Evening Under the Lamps” Circa 1903, which can b found in the collection at the @barnesfoundation .

  • The Barmaid - 1953
▫️Alan Lowndes

  • Between 1911 and 1918 Maetzel-Johannsen traveled repeatedly to Berlin. During the First World War she took classes from Lovis Corinth. After the war, together with her husband, Maetzel-Johannsen was one of the co-founders of the Hamburg Secession.
In 1921, Maetzel-Johannsen moved into her own studio in Hamburg. Here works were made, in which she emphasized the surface effect of the paintings more strongly. At the same time she was concerned with the New Objectivity, which began to spread throughout Germany in the mid-1920s. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • With Georges Seurat’s Le Chahut, 1890, oil on canvas, 170 x 141 cm, in Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo.
Georges Seurat, 1859-1891, is considered one of the most important Post Impressionist painters. He renounced the random spontaneity of Impressionism in favor of a measured painting technique grounded in science and the study of optics to depict modern urban life. He found inspiration in contemporary writing on color theory, especially the treatises of Charles Henry, Eugène Chevreul, and Odgen Rood. His technique of using tiny brushstrokes of contrasting colors, dots, which he applied so close to one another that the eye blends them into forms became known as Pointillism. Seurat made numerous, meticulous drawing and oil sketches which he used to help design the composition and determine the effects of color and light. Although his oeuvre is relatively small in quantity, he had a lasting impact on the work of Paul Signac and other peers who took his use of color theory and technical innovations further. Seurat completed La Chahut, which is an alternative name for the sexually charged can-can dance, a year before his death. During this time he dedicated several works to performances of circus and cabaret acts from Paris. Seurat captures the excitement and joyous atmosphere of Parisian nightlife in a measured composition. To evoke gaiety Seurat focused on an upward movement of lines throughout the painting. Examples of these ascending lines can be seen in smiles, eyebrows, moustaches, bows, instruments, lamps, clothing and the dancers’ legs among others. The work was first exhibited at the 1890 Salon de la Société des Artistes Indépendants. Despite its energetic subject Le Chahut was criticized as being too wooden and mechanical.

  • Happy Birthday to Stuart Davis, born #OnThisDay in 1894!
Davis would get his start at the Robert Henri School of Art, where he was influenced by the stylings of the Ashcan artists. In time, however, Davis would abandon his Realist style and subject matter, and began experimenting with abstraction; the results of these endeavors are seen here.
.
While “An Analogical Emblem Landscape,” most likely had its origins in a drawing done from observation, Davis created this semi-abstracted work with his rhythmic linear use of color, shape, and composition.

Interestingly, the areas around the nose and chin where the white paint of the background has worn away, you can still see the goddess' original profile which was traced by the first artist before being corrected and fully painted by his more senior colleague. #egyptology #archaeology #ancientegypt #hieroglyphs #hieroglyphics #maat #nefertari #goddess #arthistory #luxor

Bon samedi soir ;) #circe #art #arthistory #mythology #drink #beauty #poison #wine #winelife #ulysse #20thcentury #saturdaynight #mood #___seemysea

  • ~ The history of female sexuality : social control ~

Societies differ remarkably in what they consider socially desirable and undesirable in terms of sexual activity and in what they attempt to prevent or promote. There appear, however, to be four basic sexual controls in the majority of human societies. First, to control endless competition, some form of marriage is necessary. This not only removes both partners from the competitive arena of courtship and assures each of a sexual partner, but it allows them to devote more time and energy to other necessary and useful tasks of life.

Second, control of forced sexual relationships is necessary to prevent anger, feuding, and other disruptive retribution.

Third, all societies exert control over whom one is eligible to marry or have as a sexual partner. Endogamy, holding the choice within one’s group, increases group solidarity but tends to isolate the group and limit its political strength. Exogamy, forcing the individual to marry outside the group, dilutes group loyalty but increases group size and power through new external liaisons. Some combination of endogamy and exogamy is found in most societies. All have incest prohibitions.

Fourth, there is control through the establishment of some safety-valve system: the formulation of exceptions to the prevailing sexual restrictions. There is the recognition that humans cannot perpetually conform to the social code and that well-defined exceptions must be made. .

  • ✍🏼Título: “Corriendo por la playa. Valencia”
👨🏼‍🎨Autor: Joaquín Sorolla (España, 1863-1923)
📆Fecha: 1908
⏳Período: Impresionismo
✂️Material: Óleo sobre lienzo (90cm x 166,5cm)
📍Ubicación: Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias, Oviedo (España)
〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️

  • _______________________________________________ “Komuso, Priests of the Fuke Sect” | By: Wada Sanzo (1883-1967)
_______________________________________________
Created ca. 1950, this intriguing shin-hanga print depicts a dog and komusō, a group of Japanese mendicant monks of the Fuke school of Zen Buddhism who flourished during the Edo period of 1600-1868.
Komusō 虚無僧 means “priest of nothingness” or “monk of emptiness. They were known for playing solo pieces on the shakuhachi (a type of Japanese bamboo flute). These pieces, called honkyoku ("original pieces"), were played during a meditative practice called suizen, for alms, as a method of attaining enlightenment, and as a healing modality.
Komusō wore a tengai or tengui (天蓋), a woven straw hat or kasa which completely covered their head like an overturned basket or a kind of woven beehive. The idea was that by wearing such a hat they removed their ego. What the hat also did was remove their identity from prying eyes.
Furthermore, the government granted the komusō the rare privilege to freely travel the country without hindrance—playing the flute for alms and meditation. This was because many komusō were spies for the Shogunate; and some were undercover spies, disguised as priests.
