  • 🚨Long Post Alert 🚨
Growing up, I was the middle child of three kids. Both of my siblings had a somewhat privileged upbringing; my older brother got a lot of stuff given to him and my younger sister was the only daughter. My parents decided that they would pay for her college education, so I had to find my own way. I grew up with a father who served 31 years in the Army, so the thought of joining the Army had always been a possibility for me and was encouraged by my father. Having the experience of talking to my dad about the different programs just made sense. Being able to use tuition assistance and the reserve G.I. bill played a major factor in my decision..

At the time I was 17 and the year was 2006, when there was intense fighting overseas so I figured my mom was going to be the harder sale so I went to her first. To my surprise she was very supportive, but it was my father who took a little more time to convince. During his time in the Army my father served as a recruiter so he knew I would need a parental consent formed signed. He wanted me to wait until I was 18 so I could make the decision on my own. Regardless, I was able to convince him to sign the form for me and I joined the army as a junior in high school..

I came into the Army as a 91 Bravo (wheeled vehicle mechanic). One of first my assignments was with an engineer unit where I was able to go to Honduras and do humanitarian work building schools, hospitals, and roads. It was actually the same unit my dad was the First Sergeant of a few years back. A lot of the Soldiers that were privates when my dad was there were now Staff Sergeants and Sergeants First Class which made it very interesting..
