  • For those who find it at the right time in their lives, Bhutan can be a catalyst for personal transformation. The 17th century Japanese haiku poet Basho believed that travel can be a process of spiritual rebirth. He wrote that when we visit sacred sites and explore sacred landscapes, we enter a liminal space in the heart and the mind, where the old habitual self dies, and a new awareness arises. We undertake such a journey seeking to be transformed to a higher state of consciousness by encountering all the sublime influences in our travel. The multitude of spiritually significant landmarks in Bhutan, such as Paro Taktsang, makes it a place of such awakening.⁣
⁣
Paro Taktsang, or Tiger’s Nest, is a Himalayan monastery in the upper Paro Valley built in 1692. It is believed that the “second Buddha” of Bhutan meditated in the caves of the cliff in the 8th century. As legend has it, Guru Padmasambhava arrived on the back of a flying tigress concubine and tamed the tiger demon (hence the iconic name). ⁣
⁣
For those without a flying tiger concubine (like myself), the hike to Tiger’s Nest was significantly more difficult. I hiked for over 2 hours from the valley floor (already high at 7000 feet), to the monastery at 10,240 ft. I climbed the very steep trail over almost vertical switchbacks, and the monastery appeared and disappeared in an out of the trees and the mists. As I finally entered the monastery, I was able to enjoy some peaceful moments, listening to the chanting and praying all around me. It was truly an unforgettable experience and I was completely transformed.⁣

  • Dark Facade Design Crush 🏠
Victorian Townhome Residence by Todd Davis Architecture originally built in 1885 and Located in the Liberty-Hill Historic District of San Francisco. This completely renovated Victorian residence. Unlike the oft-depicted “painted ladies” of Steiner Street, whose palette of exterior hues can exceed ten different paint colors on a single home, this remodeled traditional dwelling utilizes a monochromatic black scheme to emphasize form-a rare aesthetic dialogue in the American Victorian tradition. #GentlemanModern #Architecture #Black
