- Yamoussoukro, #cotedivoire 🇨🇮 The Basilica de Notre Dame de la Paix is a beautiful yet bizarre monument, much like the capital city it’s based in. It cost an estimated $300 million in a country that has been beset by poverty and conflict. Its construction doubled the country’s debt. Each of its 7,000 seats has in-built air conditioning. Enormous speakers are carved into the concrete pillars. Around 7,000 square metres of stained glass was imported from France. Based on the Basilica di San Pietro in Rome, it was built in just three years — between 1986 and 1989 — and it’s technically the largest basilica in the world. But Pope John Paul II asked for the cupola to be slightly lower so that the Vatican’s was still higher.
