  • Shrovetide

#AALfabeto

"Wat Pho"
.
.
.
Wat Pho (the Temple of the Reclining Buddha) is one of the largest temple complexes in the city of Bangkok (Thailand). It lies to the south of the Grand Palace, which was built in 1782. Inside the temple there is a giant reclining Buddha covered in gold leaf, which is 15 metres tall and 46 metres long. This gigantic statue of Buddha was created in 1848 and it is still the largest Buddha in Thailand. The temple is also home to a Bodhi tree that is believed to have been grown from part of the tree under which Buddha became enlightened.

  • • York, St. Mary's Abbey •
An illustration of a seal of St. Mary's Abbey. This 11th century seal is a vesica with a design of Our Lady crowned and seated, holding the Christ child and a book. Above the child is the sun and in the left hand side is a lily. The seal continued to be used throughout the life of the Benedictine abbey until its dissolution in 1539, at which point there were one abbot and 49 monks instated.

Solon’un Mezarı(Aslanlı Mabet)

Kümbet Köyü - Seyitgazi
Frig Uygarlığı'nın İnanç Merkezi Yazılıkaya Platformu'na ulaşan antik yol üzerindeki Kümbet Vadisi 'ne; Eskişehir’in 75 km, Seyitgazi’nin 36 km güneyinde yer alan Kümbet köyü, Yamacında Kümbet köyünün kurulduğu höyükte Frig ve Roma dönemlerinde kullanılan Solon’un Mezarı(Arslanlı Mabet) bulunmaktadır.

  • There is no Planet B. Mountains of the Moon

These are the Rwenzori Mountains, or the ‘Mountains of the Moon’, as they were nicknamed by a Greek merchant called Diogenes.

The mountains lie on the border of today’s Uganda and Democratic of Congo. They peak as high as 5,100 metres, and have five vegetational zones that alternate between tropical rainforest to alpine meadows and snow covered terrain.

Geologically, these are one of the places that tell us about ancient climate change, including when the warming at the end of the last Ice Age began—namely between about 20,000 and 19,000 years ago.

Unfortunately, the impact of recent, industrial era, human-caused climate warming is now writ large on the mountains. In 1906, the Rwenzori had 43 named glaciers on six mountains covering 7.5 square km, now only three mountains still have glaciers and these cover a mere 1.5 square km.
When climate change deniers say “we’ve been here before, we’ll get through it again”, they don’t know their archaeology. There is no Planet B.

  • Pretty frequently when the topic of the Aztec or other mesoamerican cultures come up informally in chit chat I’ve heard them referred to as ‘tribes’, as well as by nerds trying to justify the conquest by belittling indigenous achievements. I feel the term tribe contains connotations of primitivity that reflects unfairly on the achievements of mesoamerican cultures . Cambridge offers the following definition of tribe; 'a group of people, often of related families, who live together, sharing the same language, culture, and history, especially those who do not live in towns or cities’. Now this may have been true in the case of the Mexica in their early history as nomadic wanderers, and the Chichimec of northern Mexico. However to describe the Mexica society at the height of it’s power encountered by the Spanish as tribal is clearly inaccurate. At the time of European arrival, the Mexica state was vast and complex. Their home Tenochtitlan was a permanent settlement, a sprawling city with huge public infrastructure works in which bureaucratic order reigned supreme, from the design of the city itself to how it was to be utilised and maintained by it’s populace. Population estimates vary but consistently fall around the 200,000 mark meaning that to while the family group still had important function in society, it is not a group made up of a handful of clans and exceeds the definition offered. The Aztec empire (along with it’s other three cities Texcoco and Tlacopan) was compromised of centrally governed city states with very large, socially stratified populations in permanent cities of size comparable to any European city at the time. The Masai, Papua New Guinean and Amazonian people are oft referred to as tribes and their societies had not achieved the same complexity as the Aztec, lumping the Aztec with them seems misinformed at best and wilfully ignorant/disingenuous at worst. This 2-day conference reached out to an audience of 70 early career researchers from ten different countries and provided the opportunity to discuss maritime archaeology. This was with the input of two keynote scholars working as directors of maritime archaeology research centres, two directors working for the HFF, and one member of the HFF steering committee.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and presented at the symposium and made MAGS2020 a unique experience of academic insights, thought-provoking discussions and networking.

In the following months Nesreen and Achilles will be collecting the symposium papers, overseeing an editorial volume on the conference proceedings. #maritimearchaeology #mags2020 #underwaterarchaeology #easternmediterranean #conference #archaeology

  • Two views of Megantereon by Mauricio Anton.
👣
Megantereon was a genus of prehistoric  saber-toothed cat that lived in North America,  Eurasia, and Africa. It may have been the ancestor of Smilodon.
👣
Fossil fragments have been found in Africa,  Eurasia, and  North America. The oldest confirmed records of  Megantereon are known from the Pliocene of North America and are dated to about 4.5 million years.
👣
The largest specimens, with an estimated body weight of 90–150 kilograms (200–330 lb) (average 120 kilograms (260 lb)), are known from India.
👣
At the end of the Pliocene it may have evolved into the larger Smilodon  in North America, while it survived in the Old World until the middle Pleistocene.

No et quedis sense plaça! 🗓 27 de febrer a les 19h al #MACbcn ⠀

  • Temple of Zeus.

It's a view from acropolis.
I feel strange about the city because Athens is ancient city and there is so many ancient greek and roman ruins, sculptures and antiques, but the city's atmosphere was really modern.
Then, I reserched the history of Athens around 19 ~ 20th.
They said that after being the capital city of Greece, the city got bigger and bigger so lots of buildings in Athens are not so old.

  • So in Reno world, this was the back of the house with the 1960s extension. It’s now gone. Just before Ciara and Dennis hit, it was hit by the inimitable trio of Mark, Dicky and Jack, the builders. Full ground excavation for the foundations for the extension starts next week. Easy... not so.
⠀⠀
One of the planning conditions for the planning application approval was that we have an archaeological watching brief, hence my question in stories a few days ago. Not many of you had experienced one but the format seems to be the same for those that did - a person sat in a van outside the house for the duration of the excavation “watching” and waiting for the unearthing of bones, pots, tunnels etc, at vast expense! This is the fun for the coming week - I’ll keep you posted....
⠀⠀
Anyone have any build war stories, making your otherwise calm and gentle builders into quivering wrecks, nervous of a skeleton nightmare?
⠀⠀
Have a great weekend x

  • When I first saw Rajon ki Baoli in October 2009, it was all dried up and i walked down to the 4th sub-level. And now, it is filled with water completely.
I am not sure if i should be happy or sad, because this is dirty stagnant water, which simply means 'Health Hazards'. This is not water level rising. This is just accumulation of rain water in a choked pit.

Rajon ki Baoli is one of the most Ornate Baolis of Delhi, built by Daulat Khan during Lodhi Era. It is now part of 100 acre Mehrauli Archaeological Park in Delhi.
