  • ship trunk story: This is a life story that I really want to know more about ... how did it end?

I found 3 trunks at the flea market the other day -- I decided quickly that they were all coming home with me. I was so excited, I mean, how often do you come across THREE trunks all black and all with a price tag that I was happy with?! ⠀⠀⠀⠀
You see, I've always had this curious obsession with ship trunks - who were there owners, where did they travel to and where did they travel from? Did they leave loved ones behind? How long did they have to save to buy this trunk and buy a ticket to their destination? What did they decide to pack and what possessions did they sadly have to leave behind? Was their entire life inside of this trunk? Were they planning on coming back home and never made it?
⠀⠀⠀⠀
I'm sure each one could tell a story! ⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I brought them home I started to open all of the linen lined drawers inside and the very first one had this small black leather deposit book stamped The Citizens National Bank in Waco Texas. The opening deposit is dated Dec 3, 1932, for the amount of $91.19 and the last deposit is dated May 2, 1936. The signature on the opening page looks to read in her finest signature "Mrs. M Ethel loafer". As soon as I saw the book I could see the small hand-cut photo of this little girl. Her eyes are so sad -- was this her daughter? Her sister? Did she know she wouldn't see her for a very long time or possibly never again?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There is this quote I recently heard from David M. Eagleman and I remember feeling so sad when reading it -- it seems appropriate for this little gem that I found inside of this trunk, and in honor of Mrs. M Ethel Loafer, I've spoken your name, I hope it's not the last time and I only wish I knew the end of your story... “There are three deaths. The first is when the body ceases to function. The second is when the body is consigned to the grave. The third is that moment, sometime in the future, when your name is spoken for the last time.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • After months of unsuccessfully trying to paint the flowers I love, I’m starting a new approach. >>> Perfectionism prevents me from even trying most of the time. I’m just going to spend a little time every day painting the things around me. My goal is not realism, but illustration. I’m going to do it quickly, not giving myself a chance to “fix” this and that, with the end result being lobbed in the trash. >>> Today’s subject: a mug that belonged to my paternal grandmother Magdalene, whom I never met. She died while my father was around 19 years old. It means a lot to me, and I use it to hold my paintbrushes out of reach of the littles, or sometimes drink coffee when I’m especially trusting of my dexterity.

  • The Flying Houses Carousel is the nation’s oldest platform carousel. Since 1884, the Flying Horses Carousel has delighted visitors in the town of Oak Bluffs.

Constructed by Charles Dare of New York Carousel Manufacturing in 1876, it is one of only two Dare carousels that still exist. Originally operated as an attraction on Coney Island, it was moved to Oak Bluffs in 1884 and includes stationary carved wooden horses with manes and tails of real horse hair and inset glass eyes. Each horse is brightly painted and fixed to the rotating platform by a metal post.

In the 1870s, when the Flying Horses Carousel was designed, summer recreation in America was expanding. At its peak, Coney Island, the most famous of the country’s amusement parks, had 25 carousels in operation – including the Flying Horses Carousel.

The carousel was acquired by Vineyard Trust in 1986 to prevent it from being dismantled and sold piecemeal to collectors of antique carved horses. The Trust undertook an extensive restoration of the Flying Horses, returning the carousel to its original appearance, complete with the historic panel paintings that were done by a Dare factory artist.
