  • :: Death’s-head Hawkmoth

As mentioned in the earlier post, the name death's-head hawkmoth refers to any of three moth species of the genus Acherontia (Acherontia atropos, Acherontia styx and Acherontia lachesis). These moths are easily distinguishable by the vaguely human skull-shaped pattern of markings on the thorax. All three species are fairly similar in size, coloration and life cycle.

These moths have several unusual features. All three species have the ability to emit a loud chirp if irritated. The sound is produced by inhaling and expelling air, which vibrates the epipharynx like an accordion, often accompanied by flashing of the brightly colored abdomen in a further attempt to deter predators. The chirp of the death's head hawkmoth takes approximately one-fifth of a second. A study by National Geographic found that the epipharynx was originally built to suck up honey, but was modified to produce sound.

All three species are commonly observed raiding beehives of different species of honey bee for honey; A. atropos only attacks colonies of the well-known western honey bee, Apis mellifera. They can move about in hives without being disturbed because they mimic the scent of the bees.

The skull-like pattern and its fanciful associations with the supernatural and evil have fostered superstitious fears of these creatures. The moths' sharp, mouse-like squeaking intensifies the effect.

  • Counter conditioning dogs who are reactive on leash can be both challenging and frustrating for owners. Sometimes, we would rather avoid situations that stress our dogs out instead of working through them.
The trick is to create positive experiences out of those situations. If we rewrite the experience, we rewire the brain. 🐾
Meet Luna, a 3 year old golden retriever who's been having a tough time on leash. We started counter conditioning during out initial session and she was able to focus on her owner and even perform some basic obedience in front of other dogs! She's got a ways to go, but with the proper exposure she will be wagging her tail as she passes dogs in no time.
