  • A few weeks ago, @them reached out to me because they liked a photo on my page (my profile pic) and wanted to repost it as part of their #oneofthem series. They also wanted me to provide a story about my experience in the queer community to go with the photo. Only a snippet of the story got published and I'd like to share the rest of it with you:

"I came out as trans about a year ago. I first felt it when I was about 9 but didn't have the courage to admit it to myself until last spring. I just didn't *feel* like I was trans/part of the community because I had never seen a transgender man that I felt I could really relate to. The media has failed with representation in that regard. [My feelings of inclusion didn't change] until I was on the internet one night and saw a story about another guy's transformation and he reminded me so much of me! He worked in a similar industry as me, he loved to go to the gym like I do, he kind of looked like me, and he just seemed like a completely normal, happy guy. I saw so much of myself in him and his success story is what made it finally click for me.

Now that I'm out and visible, I want to use my platform to be what that guy was for me to other people who may be questioning their identity. I want them to see that you can achieve happiness after all of those years of fear, self-destruction, and terrible thoughts. You can be out and still have a strong support system. You can be out and still get a great job. You can be out and finally get to a point where you look at yourself in the mirror and love who you see in the reflection. And I just want to show the rest of the world that trans people are just like everyone else. In fact, we've been through hell, so I'd say we're a bit stronger."
