- [NEED HELP FROM ALL MY BERKELEY/BAY AREA FRIENDS!]
It took me a while to write this post, but it's finally here. I want to share my experience at an "orphan village" in Rwanda back in 2017. Rwanda has a heartbreaking history of a genocide, from which Emmanuel, my Couchsurfing host, lost his parents when he was only 2 weeks old. He grew up in an orphanage until Rwanda closed down all orphanages in 2012. The orphans were then sent to foster families that could only offer a place to stay, often too poor to provide food, education, and support. Currently there are ~200 children in this orphan village.
These little souls greeted me singing their favorite songs, clinging for hugs and attention, and following me everywhere on dusty roads with bare feet. When I was leaving the village to visit a nursery school, they accompanied me to the village entrance, stopped and stood there, endlessly watching me until I disappeared. While their unconditional love and welcome warmed my heart, the brutal reality left me feeling powerless.
Fast-forward 2 years - it is now 2019, and I feel ashamed. Ashamed that I've been forgetting about these kids after returning to my busy daily routine at Berkeley as if nothing had happened. Ashamed that I haven't done anything in return for all they've given me. Ashamed that I've only been listing excuses that I won't be much of a help, ignoring that small actions can make a change. To be honest, I thought I was saving a lot by spending $25 per day during my world trip; with this $25 per MONTH you can provide food, health insurance, and education for a child. So I finally decided to do the least I can for now, to remind myself not to let this experience sink under my privileged life
I'll be sending a package with my old clothes to Rwanda around early May. If you have any clothes that you no longer wear, or if you plan to move after graduation and need to throw some clothes out, please let me include them in my package! Even one t-shirt is greatly appreciated.
Shoot me a message to arrange a time to meet up! I'm leaving Berkeley for good on May 18th, so it'd also be a good excuse for a quick catch-up over coffee😉
