  • One of the things that I love most about this parshah is that all the bigwigs of the day were upstaged by a talking donkey. ⁣
But seriously, why was she able to see the angel and the flaming sword when none of the humans traveling with her (and on her) could see a thing? Admittedly, Balaam and Balak are not paragons of virtue, but surely they're more intelligent than a donkey? The great commentator, Rashi, tells us that this is precisely why the donkey could see more than the men. He tells us, "But he [Balaam] did not see, for G-d permitted a beast to perceive more than a man. Since he [man] possesses intelligence, he would become insane if he saw demons." ⁣
Creatures of intelligence don't have the ability to see the world as it really is, precisely because of the free will that comes along with their (our) intelligence. If we could see the world for what it is, see the angels and demons alike, we could never make real choices. Yes, we would never choose to be bad again, but at the same time we could never choose to be good. If every time we were headed down the wrong path we saw the fiery sword held by the messenger of G-d you can bet we wouldn't continue down it. But then, how is that decision worth anything? It's the sensible thing to do! Flaming sword + wrathful angel = better backtrack on my decisions here... It's true that we can't see as clearly as Balaam's donkey (or any other animal for that matter) but that makes every good deed that we do, every right choice and difficult decision that we make, all the more precious. ⁣
