  • This movie, this fucking movie. A movie has never made me more anxious or as terrified of one person as Whiplash did. Terrance Fletcher (JK Simmons) is one of the most terrifying characters to ever appear on film. The energy that JK Simmons put into the role is insane. It’s amazing how Simmons and the director (Damien Chazelle) made a music teacher/ conductor so terrifying. Now Simmons performance was not the only great one Miles Teller, who played Andrew Neiman, is absolutely amazing as well. His character Andrew is a shy kid at the start who rarely makes eye contact but then because of Fletcher he transforms into a whole new person. Teller really puts everything he has into the scenes. This movie has some of the best cinematography I have ever seen. Sharone Meir did a terrific job with this movie. The soundtrack is great as well I honestly expect nothing less from Damien Chazelle. The writing was absolutely outstanding on the movie. Damien Chazelle is one of the best writers today and this film shows why. It’s feels so real. It never feels like a script it like you’re watching someone’s life through a portal or out a window or as a bystander. This movie probably has one of my favorite endings of all time, now I’m not gonna get into too much details to avoid spoilers but it was just breathtaking. This has to be one of the most satisfying endings to any film I have ever saw. I highly recommend this movie no matter what. If you’re alive and can see and hear you have to watch this movie no questions asked. Damien Chazelle is one of the best film makers today and I would cannot wait till he releases another film.

  • (Part 1 of 2) Andrew here! The 2010’s are almost over and looking back, there sure were a great amount of fantastic films from this deacde. 2014 especially had an amazing year of cinema. I wanted to talk about one of the films that stood out to me from this year and I couldn’t be more thrilled to discuss about the psychological drama, Whiplash. This is Dave Chazelle’s masterpiece, a thrlling and tense film, also surprisingly funny, and is one of my favorite films to date.

Whiplash centers around Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller), a passionate drummer attending the fine music institution Shaffer Conservatory. After being approached by the infamous and well known instructor Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), Andrew is invited to join his class but to find out that Fletcher is actually a pretentious jerk. Competitive to prove he can make it to the top, Andrew and Fletcher duke it out in a psychological battle through music and witts.

Through phenomenal writing and acting, this movie is a fever rush of tense dilemma and drama. It exceeds at being a brilliantly crafted film revolving around music and what it means to truly become the best. I’ve watched this movie countless times and upon every viewing I learn to appreciate it more and more.

Miles as Andrew turns out to be a great performance. As we watch him struggle to pursue his passion to become the best of the best, you really feel the struggle of keeping up with Fletcher’s supreme expectations. Miles himself actually plays the drums himself in the film so it gives it more realism and immersion for the drama. However, it is definitely J.K. Simmons’ performance that completely annihilates the competition in acting. Fletcher is an interesting antagonist, one who constantly insults his students and pushes the boundaries of wanting them to be the best players he could teach. Its Simmons’ incredibly well done acting that sells the character. He gives one of the my favorite acting performances I’ve seen for a while and stands out as a hilarious and intimidating character and even pulls off being both insane and sane simultaneously.

  • (Part 2 of 2) The music is a big part of the film too, considering it is centered around jazz music. Composed by Justin Hurwitz, Whiplash has a solid list of memorable tracks, all catchy through rhythm and have important roles in the story. Certain tracks play for scenes that are very coherent with each other, making the mood more tense and conflicting. But to its core, it’s really good jazz, especially the drumming.

Neiman and Fletcher’s psychological battle with each other is incredible. You want to see Neiman succeed and prove Fletcher he’s doing the best he can whilst watching the maniac teacher push him beyond what’s expected. Their dynamic with each other has some memorable movie scenes and presents great character understanding. Fletcher especially steals every scene he’s in, with some of the best movie insults I’ve ever heard. While this is a drama, you can’t help but laugh at how much of an ass Fletcher can be and his wide range of vocabulary to make fun of Neiman and the other students.

Whiplash is an aboslute marvel and triumph in filmmaking. Its blend with music and intense chemistry with a passionate drummer and a psychotic instructor make up a film I could watch again and again. Everything is packaged tightly together and it all cultivates to the 15ish minute climax that is so satisfying and amazing to watch, it honestly gets me goosebups every time I think about it. Damien Chazelle has made 2 quality films since, but for me, Whiplash is his masterpiece and is “In a league of its own” (10/10). What’s one movie that’s stuck with you this decade? Let us know!

  • It all started with a fast and simple, non-intrusive thermal scan with this roller gadget thing at the back of my neck, and I'm able to see, from Dr Shaan's laptop screen, the graph displaying the pressure.
And honestly, it doesn't take a genius to understand a big red graph line that is tilted to one side of the neck means something unhealthy is going on at my upper cervical spine. And that is also when I know where all my migraines, headaches, dizziness, back aches, stomach influx, and hand numbness issues are coming from.
Proven from my x-ray results, my upper cervical spine is kinda screwed but not too screwed that it can't be saved. Dr Shaan helped me understand what is going on there and proceed to make adjustments for me.
So the journey from the start to get the adjustment is like:

1) non-intrusive thermal scan with that roller thingy (Computed Infrared Spinal Thermography) at the back of your neck.
2) consultation on your medical history and how our life is affected due to the condition you're having.
3) some physical test where Dr Shaan will give you instructions to move your head and hand in a certain manner. This is where you will actually realise how it affected you. Enlightened moment.
4) go for X-ray at near Lavendar MRT. (His clinic is near Kembangan MRT btw, so it's pretty convenient)
5) come back for second visit and Dr Shaan will review your case with the X-ray results then the care starts.
Fast and not too much hassle. Feeling slight different at my neck already from the first adjustment.
So if you're wondering if you should do a check with them, consider making an appointment if you're having these issues, especially if they happen frequently :

migraines
headaches
dizziness
vertigo
neck pain
sleep issues
whiplash
slipped disc
stomach problems
neurological problems

This is where you can find Dr Shaan:

  • 😡 I was rear-ended on Thursday just when I had started to feel better 7 years following the first time I was hit on the highway. He said he didn’t see me. This is infuriating. There was no fucking reason for this to occur. 😭I’m using heat, Advil, stretching and sheer determination to heal quickly. I CANNOT do this again. For now, we pray, think happy thoughts and snuggle up with the heating pad. #fibromyalgia #chronicpain #motorvehicleaccident #whiplash #driving #chronicpain #backpain

Slumdog Millionaire -2008

  • My God, what a great scene. So much intensity. Amazing acting. Remember the first time you watched this? I literally jump off the couch and yelled when the movie finished. I was so impressed.

Read the screenplay. It’s great. A really amazing example of what a young writer can do. Damien Chazelle is extremely talented, but he was so honest with this screenplay. You can feel it.

Keep on writing!

  • Similar pronunciation of word Whiplash in Thai language is "whip pa laad" means, 'be mad, be insane', which matches movie's theme.

Part of the film is based on director/writer Damien Chazelle's experience as a band student in high school. In a Q&A after a screening, Chazelle stated he was intimidated by his band instructor's presence. 🥁
