  • Promoting active and controlled dissociation

Excessive rotation of the spine, particularly trunk flexion during areas such as mobility drills can contribute to forces on the same side in the direction rotated, which can lead to lower back strain or pain.

There's a difference between just rotating your body fast and relying on passive structures, versus active and controlled dissociation.
.
By adding the addition of a block between your knees, this promotes dissociation of the pelvis and the upper body allowing active control of this movement, instead of stressing passive structures.

This addition also benefits the activation of pelvic stabilizers and trunk rotators as squeezing the block applies an isometric stability component to the pelvis.

This exact sequence occurs in many day to day activities and in areas in rotary sports from hockey, golf, baseball and thus forth.

Similar to these sports this movement is a concentric action, followed by eccentric action in the transverse plane. By executing this optimally the obliques are therefore performing the rotatory actions.

  • Believe it or not, handstands take quite a bit of shoulder flexibility to get to the fully extended position in the shoulder and be your strongest in this shape. Tuck handstand will tell you right away if shoulder flexibility is holding you back in finding strength and balance here. ⠀ 
Because you have to send the hips PAST your shoulders to find ease and balance here, that requires more opening in the upper back and shoulders. If those things are tight, tuck will be hard and feel more like you’re using brute strength to balance instead of strength AND finesse. ⠀ 
Tuck plagued me for a while and I’m now getting to the point where I like it! Why? Because I’ve focused on strengthening and opening my upper back and shoulders more! Try practicing puppy pose and wheel pose daily if you’re struggling with this like I was!

  • We all know that stretching is good for us, especially after a good workout but we are more likely to whizz off in our cars to carry on our day, allowing our hamstrings and hip flexors to tighten up. 
The same reasons for not stretching are always present: stretching is boring and painful and we don’t have time for it.
I know that if someone told me to do four stretches and hold them for 3 minutes it just wouldn’t get done. 
That’s why it’s so nice to have an accessible app like @romwod and some after class friends to get those precious 18 minutes of stretching in! Thanks guys!! It was by the way a unanimous decision - we all felt so much better after our session! 
There is no price, time or amount wise, on making sure your recovery is on point.

Lack of mobility and flexibility leads to injuries AND WE DON’T WANT THAT! Can’t stop all of our great progress because of injuries! NO NO NO!

I balance out my heavy lifting days with aerobics and deep stretching,  but most importantly I balance out my busy work week with YOGA!! My mind has to stay just as strong as, if not stronger, than my body.
.
Yoga puts me in a meditative state and allows me to shut the “noise” out for an hour and close all of those “tabs” open in my mind. I cannot stress enough how important weekly meditation is for my MENTAL WELLNESS. I have to keep the trinity strong and BALANCED. Mind. Body. Soul. This is the WARRIOR way. 💪🏾❤️🙏🏾
