Meet Alex, who founded the #SidewalkScienceCenter program in July 2018, and ever since then, he's hosted it in public parks, playgrounds, and other spaces several times a week to provide access to educational resources and dozens of hands-on experiments for anyone to engage with. ‍🧑‍🔬⁣
⁣
Here are a few words from Alex on what he’s currently doing to transition his business:⁣
⁣
With school closures and social distancing measures, he has had to transition this public program to a virtual format, making it more difficult to directly engage participants in the way SSC is meant to. At the moment, he is offering virtual sessions and selling science kits he designed from SSC itself.⁣

  • Excited for where 2020 will be taking #SidewalkScienceCenter! Keep an eye out for the cities we will be visiting throughout the year, and some VERY special events SSC gets to be a part of!

Along with this, we want to begin reaching out to anyone interested in getting more information about opening your own Sidewalk Science Center. We're looking for people able and committed to hosting SSC at least once a month - with preference being twice a month, or more frequently. We will work with you to set a schedule and become integrated into your local community.

Email: experiencdaliona@gmail.com for full details and how to become affiliated.

  • Tell your friends about our #SidewalkScienceCenter star party nights! We've drawn some great crowds this week, and with the new year swinging into full gear, there are lots of exciting things to see up in the sky!

Have you noticed the bright dot above the sunset in the last few weeks? That's the second planet from the Sun, Venus! Over the next month, as it swerves around its orbit, Venus will drop lower and lower into the sky, instead of rising, and soon it will become the Morning Star, joining Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, and briefly, Mercury as planets visible before sunrise!

Orion's Nebula is also a stunning object witness: gas clouds and dark shadows surround a cluster of infant stars...if you've never seen it before, come out for a look!

Remember, Thursday through Saturday, we are at the Bradenton Riverwalk playground & splashpad with the telescope and Sidewalk Science Center. See you there!

  • Not a pale blue dot: this royal beauty is Neptune.

At 2 billion miles distant, it is twice as far away from Earth as Saturn, and a mere 1/5 the diameter of Saturn's rings (Earth is 1/20th the diameter). It is so distant from Earth, light itself takes 4 hours and 10 minutes to reach us -- one way.

Being a planet, it does not twinkle like the stars surrounding it in the sky. Looking at it, you see a pinprick of deep blue light that is totally undisturbed by the atmospheric turbulence that shudders the stars and their infitessimal streams of photons that have traveled hundreds or even thousands of years to be seen by us.

  • Our #TransitofMercury viewing at the #BradentonRiverwalk on November 11, 2019 was a success! We watched start to finish, from 7:29am to 1:04pm, as the planet Mercury slid across the face of the Sun relative to our place in space here on Earth!

We learned about why planetary transits happen, when future ones will happen, and got to discuss what we might see from other planets in the solar system! Everyone who attended received one-of-a-kind stickers to commemorate the day, too!

We live in such a fantastic place within our solar system, to be able to view events such as this. Imagine what we might see from Mars or beyond as humans begin to explore the solar system in the next decade! Will YOU live on Mars one day? Maybe!
Thank you to everyone who came out to witness this celestial geometry that won't happen again for 13 years! You saw a phenomenon that will last a lifetime!

Remember that #SidewalkScienceCenter is hosted by Alex Martin every Friday and Saturday at the Bradenton Riverwalk playground & splashpad, and #StarPartyThursday is every Thursday if skies are clear. See you at the next!

  • Don't forget! We host #StarPartyThursday nearly every Thursday at the Bradenton Riverwalk playground and splashpad! While Jupiter has been getting too low in the sky to effectively see from our location, Saturn is still high up and visible!

With the winter constellations right around the corner (currently rising at about 11pm, so give it another month or two!) we'll be able to explore objects you've only see in photographs, such as the Orion Nebula!

We have a future to create.

  • You've never seen a rainbow quite like this! We used a glass triangular prism to create a rainbow on the wall, and then darkened the image, leaving only the colors! INCREDIBLE!! This is the light that enters our eyes, that we perceive as white light. When light passes through a medium such as water or glass, it slows down and bends, which causes the different wavelengths to scatter is slightly different directions, creating a rainbow.

The three ways we can interact with light are through REFLECTION, where light bounces off a surface. Look all around you, and all the color you see on objects is due to reflection! REFRACTION is when light passes through a medium such as water or glass and bends direction. DIFFRACTION is when light passes through tiny, tiny gaps and spreads apart as each wavelength hits the gap at a different time and bounce away from each other.

If you've been to #SidewalkScienceCenter, you've used diffraction glasses and seen rainbows EVERYWHERE!

What other cool science can you find in the world?

I've been hiding pictures from you, but now you can expect to see more pop up here and there. I traveled to Colorado from October 1 to 8 both to travel, and to host #SidewalkScienceCenter for a few days!

Since moving out of Pennsylvania, I've made it my goal to take at least one big trip per year as both a service to self-care, and to encourage me to work harder and make these trips happen. It's tough, but so far I've achieved what I need to each year.

In August 2017, it was Oregon for the solar eclipse, and a couple weeks later, a road trip to Savannah, Georgia, where I'd live for 14 months until moving to Florida in late 2018. In June 2018, it was my trip to Finland, my first time leaving the country, to speak at an international conference on science education and ecology.

Now, October 2019 brought me to Colorado. I had a brief passing stay in Colorado Springs 12 years ago, in 2007, visiting Garden of the Gods and Pike's Peak before heading to New Mexico for 3 weeks. So this trip offered me the opportunity to explore more of the state, renew those memories of #GardenoftheGods and #PikesPeak, meet some online friends (#ShoutoutToCheryl @animedia_science), and, of course, to provide a free science education experience to people on the street!

I hope you enjoy going along with me in this video journal. Where will I go next? Who will join me there? What are you doing to meet your own goals?

Here's to all our endeavors, because we have a future to create.

  • [Photoset 2 of 2] Last week, we took Sidewalk Science Center to the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder, Colorado for two days to tour the program in its first city off the east coast! Figuring out where an on-the-street science education program like SSC is one of the key factors to consider when bringing SSC to a new location. Over the course of a single day, moving the table 50 feet resulted in a wave of participants we hadn't seen the day before!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, and we hope you had a great time at our Sidewalk Science Center! The goal is to bring Sidewalk Science Center to cities all around the country and world! Engaging with communities is one of the greatest rewards SSC has brought!

In the 15 months since we began this program at Forsyth Park in Savannah, Georgia, SSC has proven time and time again to be one of the most versatile public science education programs in the world. Friday, October 18th will mark the 100th session of SSC since July 2018, and the 25th star party since June 2019.

We hope to see you again, and if you know anyone who might want to host their own Sidewalk Science Center, get them in contact with us! We are beginning to look for independent ambassadors who want to provide science education in their own communities on a monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly basis.

We have a future to create.

  • Last night's Sidewalk Science Center was one of the busiest we've had all summer! With completely clear skies, and Jupiter, the Moon, and Saturn in a straight line across the sky, the star party couldn't have gone any better! We also got to see Ptolemy's star cluster, with about 50 stars visible through this telescope, it's an awesome sight to see!

Our newest educator, Robert, held his own helping participants through science demonstrations while Alex worked the telescope! His flow is smoothing out, and he's eager to host SSC by himself while Alex travels to Colorado to host SSC in Denver, Boulder, and Colorado Springs!

We're excited that this will be the first time two Sidewalk Science Centers will be hosted simultaneously! Keep an eye out, and tell your friends in Colorado!

  • This girl is quickly becoming our resident astrophysicist-in-training! She's attend Sidewalk Science Center three times in the past month to use the telescope, and last night, she had the opportunity to take control in her own hands! She learned how to guide the telescope, locate objects, and track them with the remote! She even found Jupiter & Saturn *almost* all by herself 🔭😉 maybe she'll have a telescope of her own one day!

Remember, Jupiter and Saturn are beginning to set earlier and earlier, so there's only one or two months of good telescope viewing for them. Then we'll have to wait until next year before they rose again! So come on out to SSC every Friday and Saturday (weather permitting) and get your viewing in, as well as partipating in all the science experiments we have!

See you there!

  • Experience Daliona is developing a star field guide as part of a program revolving around star parties at our weekly #SidewalkScienceCenter nights, and we need YOUR help!

The sky tends to be light polluted. HEAVILY. So oftentimes only a few distinct objects stick out to people, if they look up at all. Right now one of those objects is Jupiter, and another is Saturn....IF you notice Saturn, that is. But if you live in a town with lots of light pollution, it can be hard to track down other stars and constellations in the sky unless you deliberately go somewhere dark.

Fortunately, dark skies aren't always out of reach. Simply knowing where to go, even moving 100 feet, can change your entire night of stargazing.

We're planning for this field guide to be a map of the most recognized objects and constellations under a wide range of light pollution, from the darkest skies you can get, to the middle of a city. As long as you can see stars in the image, no matter the light pollution, it's useful for our needs! Knowing "landmarks" in the sky can help orient you, and from there, lead you to other stars and objects! It's meant to encourage people to take that extra step, find that one dark road, step behind those trees, and Look Up.

Submissions end December 31, 2019 (let's throw New Year's in there, eh?"). Take your pictures of the sky, anywhere you want, under any conditions, and send them our way.

The field guide is planned for publication and release in late Spring 2020.

  • Hi everyone! I announced this earlier today but I'm making a dedicated post so I can make periodic reminders.

I'm developing a star field guide as part of an @ExperienceDaliona program revolving around star parties at #SidewalkScienceCenter nights.

The sky tends to be light polluted. HEAVILY. So oftentimes only a few distinct objects stick out to people. Right now one of those objects is Jupiter, and another is Saturn....IF you notice Saturn, that is. Fortunately, dark skies aren't always out of reach. Simply knowing where to go, even by moving 100 feet, can change your entire night of stargazing.

I'm planning for this field guide to be a comprehensive look at the stars under a wide range of light pollution, from the darkest skies you can get, to the middle of a city. Knowing "landmarks" in the sky can help orient you, and from there, lead you to other stars and objects! It's meant to encourage people to take that extra step, find that one dark road, step behind those trees, and Look Up.

  • 📢 AMAZON RAINFOREST DONATION INITIATIVE📢

We have set up a page on our website providing links and information to various conservation groups fighting to protect the Amazon, the rights of indigenous peoples, and other conservation organizations.

For Alex's own part, using this page, you can purchase his books in either paperback OR pdf-format ebook (for half cost), and he will donate $5 USD PER BOOK SOLD to any of the listed organizations.

His science-fiction books, the foundation of Experience Daliona & Sidewalk Science Center, are thematically linked to environmental, geopolitical, and other relevant issues - especially upcoming Book 4, Belvun, being published October 2020.

Even if you don't buy a book, the links to each organization are provided for your own research and awareness and ability to donate directly. Please share this around to spread the message.

  • Last night's Sidewalk Science Center was the first time SSC has ever been planned into a family's Florida vacation! It was so awesome that they found us more than a month ago, and they got super lucky that the clouds parted for a night of planet watching, after it had been POURING the entire week! You can't ask for better luck than that!

Thank you to everyone else who participated! It was funny how, as soon as the telescope came out, a crowd surrounded us in anticipation. Such an awesome moment! When we looked at Jupiter (center picture) its moon Europa was coming out from behind it (the dot to the upper left side of Jupiter in the picture). So cool! As the night progressed, it moved farther and farther away!

We'll be back out at the Bradenton Riverwalk Friday and Saturday next weekend. See you out there!!

  • Sidewalk Science Center got a temporary upgrade last night! Thank you to @bishopsciencefl for allowing us to borrow an 8 inch refractor telescope from the planetarium, giving us all the opportunity to see Jupiter, the Moon, and Saturn larger and clearer than ever before - even the Great Red Spot on Jupiter! The evening clouds cleared out as soon as we arrived!! To top it off, a bright meteor shot through the sky and broke up into several pieces, leaving bystanders dazzled as they waited for a chance at the telescope!

During the 3.5 hours we were at the Bradenton Riverwalk last night, about 200 people stopped by! We *are* looking to invest in telescopes that can continue providing these incredible views beyond the standard 2.5 inch telescope we usually bring out. If you would like to help us reach these goals and more, support us on Patreon for as little as $1/month - link in our Instagram bio and on the tab menu on our website at www.ExperienceDaliona.com

Next week, we'll be introducing our newest educator, who began training last night! Come by and meet him on the Riverwalk next week!

Check out our Facebook page for our schedule - we try to be on the Riverwalk EVERY weekend.

Contact us if you're interested in having us for community events, school nights, in-classroom programs, private parties, and more!

  • Before taking off for New York today, I hosted the 83rd session of Sidewalk Science Center on Thursday night! Had an AMAZING turnout, and lots of repeat participants who came just to see what was new!

With special astronomy calendars to pass out for free, fossils, a new diffraction visor from the future, and spectacular views of Jupiter and Saturn, there was so much to celebrate last night!

Sidewalk Science Center will be absent the entire next week (still looking for team members, if anyone knows someone willing to volunteer every week/month!) but the week of August 4th, we have SEVERAL school and community events, as well as regularly-scheduled SSC.

If you know a teacher, tell them SSC is FREE to hire for back to school nights!

See you in two weeks!

  • The 80th session of Sidewalk Science Center celebrating the 1 Year Anniversary on Saturday evening, and the first SSC of Year 2. Seriously considering turning the first image into a poster for the SSC table...hmmm.

This is just another full showing of how SSC connects communities. So many people gathered together and had a blast. Science brings us together. Science is for everyone. The pursuit of science is a collective experience.

To all our endeavors, because we have a future to create. --Alex

  • July 11, 2018 to July 11, 2019. A year of Sidewalk Science Center. 79 sessions in that date range with an estimated 7,500 participants.

SSC began based out of Forsyth Park in Savannah, Georgia, and is now based in Bradenton, Florida. But its influence has spread far beyond.

This collage features 423 unique pictures with more than 830 individual participants, cataloging just a fraction of the experiences at Sidewalk Science Center. Meeting thousands of people, you'd think it would be difficult to remember them all, but I pick out almost anyone and tell you the story from their visit. Some, I'm still in contact with, even two families from abroad. Imagine the impact we could have with dozens, hundreds, thousands of Sidewalk Science Centers.

Sidewalk Science Center strives to provide resources that encourage scientific engagement on a weekly basis, featuring fields of study ranging from physics to paleontology. Having traveled to 10 cities up and down the east coast of the United States, appearing on beaches, at festivals, and introduced to NASA parties like @yurisnight_fl and a @PlanetarySociety meet-up, SSC has proven to be versatile and accessible in any situation and location.

SSC has allowed me to travel more often than ever before in my life, meeting & befriending people who have already opened up amazing opportunities I never dreamed I'd have. I hope as SSC and Experience Daliona continue to grow that they, too, will open up scientific opportunities for students, families, ambassadors, and individuals everywhere, to both provide and receive these educational experiences as cheaply and efficiently as possible.

Thank you to @tayaziz_, @bailey.cake, @jarvismj, @peytunes, @jessbeees, and other Patreon supporters who have aided these efforts financially. I hope you've seen the impact you're a part of, and continue to believe in the mission.

In the future, as SSC expands, we hope to form a diverse network of educators who will be able to collaborate and develop experiences at their own Sidewalk Science Centers. This is for all of us.

We have a future to create.

  • There is always something to agree on. When @thescalex.of.science and I were setting up his #sidewalksciencecenter I walked over to the recently-toppled Silent Sam monument. A group of rough-looking bikers we're paying their respects and talking to a @wral reporter.

Alex and I had walked past them when scouting for a place to set up, and one gentleman hopped over a fence to pick up a water bottle his friend had tossed. This same man walked over to me as I looked at the flowers others had left.

The reporter shot video as we chatted because it looked so strange: a rugged biker in a jacket sporting Bible verses and touting the right to own guns chatting with a clean-cut woman with a short quoting a famous scientist.

Turns out, we disagreed on a lot. John felt the statue should be replaced, I feel that it's better banished from campus. John is conservative in his politics and I am definitely a Liberal - we are both worried about the upcoming election, but probably for different reasons. John is a Christian, and I am an atheist.

More than anything, though, we love North Carolina and want to promote the health of our community. We may each feel very strongly about our views, but we respectfully discussed these differences. It's more important to have peaceful discourse.

After talking about how he bathes his cat and why he wears a dragonfly pin on his jacket (John is secretly kind of a sweetheart), he asked if he could give me something. In my hand, John placed a small metal cross and said he hoped I would stay safe (2nd pic). I wished him the same and thanked him for being so kind.

Hopefully we can meet again to have more conversations, both to learn about how we differ and share about how we are the same.

But if you live in a town with lots of light pollution, it can be hard to track down other stars and constellations in the sky unless you deliberately go somewhere dark.

Fortunately, dark skies aren't always out of reach.

Submissions end December 31, 2019 (let's throw New Year's in there, eh?"). Take your pictures of the sky, anywhere you want, under any conditions, and send them my way.

The field guide is planned for publication and release in late Spring/early Summer 2020.

  • "We just made our first sale, we just made our first sale, we just made our first sale, the first of many to come!" I can officially say that @experiencedaliona has had someone reserve our first educational kit, Module 1: Force!

I'm pretty sure it stemmed from the rogue newspaper article the Savannah Morning News published about Sidewalk Science Center last week...that I had submitted back on October😂 but hey! It means somebody is getting it as gift for their grandkids, and that makes it all worth it!

We're excited to get this into their hands! Keep an out for when that happens. Experience Daliona and Sidewalk Science Center are officially in business, always working hard to get science education into people's hands!
