  • Repost: Saw a pretty amazing thing tonight at the gym. This firefighter was on the stair climber in full equipment, including his mask and oxygen tank. After about a half hour, I saw him finishing and taking his gear off so I went over to tell him how much I respected what he was doing. I figured he was training for a firefighter exam, but when I commented on it, he exclaimed, "110 floors! Took me 30 minutes, 10 seconds." 110 floors... OMG. It's September 11 and he had just climbed the equivalent of 110 floors like the firefighters did in the World Trade Center. Apparently, this is a tradition that many firefighters do to honor the 343 firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty that day. It's a helluva tribute! • Many in our newsroom felt last week’s September 11 observance was an especially heavy, emotional one. But Jen Maxfield’s story managed to warm the heart. Its about the caretakers at the Memorial . And in many ways it was inspired by the late great NY columnist, Jimmy Breslin. Find out how in The Debrief podcast. • What is a GORUCK event? You could say, “a team-building endurance event modeled after special operations training.” You could also say it’s (event duration) hours of PT, movement, and punishment for a patch. When I think of what GORUCK events are, I think of moments like this. It’s coming together, sometimes with complete strangers, to accomplish a common goal. Whether that be a specific movement for a specific duration, or, simply, holding on ‘til it’s over. It’s going beyond your self-imposed limitations by putting others before yourself. By putting yourself under weight so your teammate can catch their breath. By hoisting your teammate on your shoulders so they can get off their feet for just a moment. So, what’s a GORUCK event? It’s a duration of time when you learn to be selfless for those around you, and through that selflessness, pushing beyond anything you once thought you were capable of.

  • Fresh off a 24-hour shift at Fire Station 3, Alex Mickschl stands tall on the edge of a rocky cliff overlooking I-90, waving a large flag. For 17 years, this patch of wind swept land is where Alex remembers and honors his fellow brothers and sisters who died on 9/11. "I do this to remind people, but not just the of the tragedy, but how we came together after it happened," said Alex.

In 2001, Alex was a new hire with the fire department, and his daughter was just a few months shy of her first birthday. On 9/11, Alex vividly remembers watching the terrorist attacks unfold on live television at home, with his sweet daughter in a bassinet near by. "I remember thinking there was nothing I can do because I was so new on the job. But I had to do something to show respect, and this is what I came up with," added Alex.

On the first anniversary of 9/11, Alex appeared on a bluff near 5th and Arthur and started waving a four by six foot flag, in his full uniform. "I don't want people to see me, Alex. It's all about being a firefighter since that's my calling. It's about honoring brother and sisters in uniform," said Alex.

Every 9/11, Alex waves the flag four hours in the morning and four hours in the afternoon. Standing out here gives him time to reflect. "In my head, it doesn't feel like 18 years since 9/11. When I think of the firefighters, my brothers and sisters, I get emotional...I get into a zen space of trying to be at peace," said Alex.

Time is perhaps best reflected in the eyes of Alex daughter, Alexandria. A little girl and a bassinet is now a teen with big dreams to join the military and be a firefighter, just like her dad. "I couldn't be prouder," said Alex.

In addition, sixth graders from Mr. Simmons and Ms. Olivencia’s class did an outstanding job singing “God Bless the USA.” Well done, Tigers.

  • The 9/11 ASL video clip that I shared here on Signed With Heart last year- I didn’t know it was a part of a documentary video until today when I asked a Deaf ASL teacher if she knew of any good ASL videos related to 9/11 I could share on Signed With Heart and she told me about “9/11 Fear In Silence” so I looked it up… and the first two minutes of the documentary was the same video clip I posted last year- I watched a part of the documentary (you have to buy the DVD to watch all of it) and thought it was interesting- a couple of Deaf survivors sharing their experiences- and I wanted to share with you guys. If you’d like to watch a part of it too (9 minutes long)- you can visit http://jadefilm.com (@jadefilms_projects). Thanks, Missy (@missykeast), for sharing about the documentary.
.
My heart goes out to all those families and friends affected by the tragedy of 9/11.
.
Thankful for all the men and women who has served and continue to serve fighting and protecting our country.
.
I’m reminded that every day is a gift- to not take a new day for granted… to walk in love… to be patient… to be kind…  to make the most of each day… and to enjoy life too. 😌
