  • Rebuked: Anesthesia for Transphobia (Part Three)
~~~~~
However, Mr. Payne forgot one very important piece of context, and this is where the report from The Williams Institute becomes vital. See, according to the report that Mr. Payne most likely used to find out the frequency of suicide attempts among trans people (although he never mentioned that these were only attempts, not successes), trans people also experience homelessness at a nearly 70% frequency, and about 60% have been disrespected or harassed by law enforcment. At least 50% have been harassed or bullied at school. 60% of trans people have experienced a doctor or care provider refusing to treat them due to them being transgendered. About 65% have suffered physical or sexual violence at work, and about 70% have experienced the same at school. 57% have suffered through being ostracized by their own family. Most, if not all of this, does not hold up for any racial groups in the United States, so Mr. Payne's argument is as disingenuous and misleading as it is disgusting. Mr Payne then calls "transgenderism . . . a deleterious psychological affliction," and finally makes an unapplicable theological point that serves only to undermine this already unsound argument, and blaming societal problems on "the feel-good politics of liberals." This argument is so nonsensical that it could be called adorably incoherent if it weren't also unabashedly bigoted and unapologetically transphobic. #trans #transgender #lgbt #lgbtq #bigotry #transphobia #thefederalist #danielpayne #suicide #mentalillness #awareness #race #discrimination #posterity #delusion #article
  • Rebuked: Anesthesia for Transphobia (Part Two)
~~~~~
Mr. Payne brings up some publications which attributed these rates of attempted suicide to discrimination, but Mr. Payne has two counterarguments for this: transgendered people "are mentally ill and need serious treatment," and the claim that transgendered people disproportionately attempt suicide because of discrimination "doesn't hold up when applied to other minority groups." The first counterargument is easier to address: Mr. Payne says that his claim of transgendered people being mentally ill is "not a moral or ethical judgement", but rather, "a fact," is simply bollocks. That logic implies that anything which isn't a moral or ethical judgement must be factual, an idea that is demonstrably false. If a person were to claim that glass is made out of strawberries, for example, that would not be a moral judgement, an ethical judgement, or a fact. It would be false, and that is what Mr. Payne's claim is as well. The truth is, no credible psychological institution currently considers the state of being transgender to be a mental illness or disorder. In fact, the American Psychological Association has a dropdown on their "transgender" page as part of their FAQ, labeled "Is being transgender a mental disorder?" The first sentence of said dropdown states, in full: "A psychological state is considered a mental disorder only if it causes sognificant distress or disability." The dropdown further says that "identifying as transgender does not constitute a mental disorder." The dropdown also distinguishes between gender dysphoria and transgenderism, snuffing that poor argument before it is even made. So, with that terrible point addressed, let's move to the next counterargument. Mr. Payne links to a piece by Stephanie Siek which shows that black people tend to report seeing a lot more racial discrimination than any other racial group in the United States, the other groups being listed as 'latino,' 'white,' and 'other.' #trans #transgender #lgbt #lgbtq #bigotry #transphobia #thefederalist #danielpayne #suicide #mentalillness #awareness #race #discrimination #posterity #delusion #article

  • Rebuked: Anesthesia for Transphobia (Part One)
~~~~~
On July 7, 2016, an article for the Federalist was published, called "The Transgender Suicide Rate Isn't Due To Discrimination." Spoiler alert, the article is transphobic drivel, and transphobia has already been addressed on this page, but for the sake of posterity, let's look at the problems in this specific article anyway. This article was written just a few days after "Chealsea Manning—who became a male-to-female [. . .] allegedly attempted suicide." So, now that context is given, the real point of the article can be given. The point of this article is to give context for the "alarmingly high suicide rate" among transgender individuals, although Mr. Daniel Payne, the author, put the word 'transgender' in double quotation marks, despite him not quoting anyone, meaning he is in fact insinuating that transgenderism isn't real. This insinuation seems pointless however, because later in the article, he explicitly calls transgenderism a delusion anyway, so it's anyone's guess as to why he tries to stuff his transphobia under the proverbial rug. Anyway, Mr. Payne writes that transgendered people have a suicide rate that is "north of 40 percent by some reliable estimates." However, despite linking sources elsewhere in his article, Mr. Payne never links to his source for this claim. While there is no way to know, Mr. Payne is most likely giving the "Findings of the National Transgender Discrimination Survey," as published  by The Williams Institute, and that's important, so remember that for later! Anyway, this report does find that transgendered men and women both have a suicide attempt rating north of fourty percent, so rather than being pedantic, let's simply press on instead. #trans #transgender #lgbt #lgbtq #bigotry #transphobia #thefederalist #danielpayne #suicide #mentalillness #awareness #race #discrimination #posterity #delusion #article
