  • Why is Ashtanga such a great practice? 🧘🏽‍♀️
Practicing the set sequence each time gives the practitioner an opportunity to really see themselves on the mat. An opportunity to show up and learn to accept their body and mind in what ever way it may come. One day you may be able to come into parivrrta parsvakonasana with ease, feeling strong and confident, and the next day the pose just isn’t working, legs and hips are feeling tight, spine isn’t allowing the twist - But that is fine! As life is consistently changing so are our body’s and mind, the set sequence enables us to experience this beauty and learn to be totally ok with it. To be totally ok with where you are at in the moment. To totally accept life as it is in the moment. 🧘🏼‍♂️
The strong emphasis on the breath coupled with the set sequence gives us a space to go deep into a meditative state. Once the sequence is learnt it’s much easier to drop into this state with not a lot of thought having to go into what posture comes next. The whole process becomes a wonderful flow of breath and movement. A moving meditation. 🧘🏽‍♀️
The postures in the sequence work the whole body, increasing strength, stamina and flexibility all at the same time. And modifications allow this practice to be accessible to all. Remember that you are not expected to show up and master these poses on your first attempt, this is not the goal of yoga. Instead see this an an exploration of your body, mind and soul, an opportunity for an experience, what ever that may bring. A peak into who you really are on and off the mat...
Who knows what you might see?

  • Im on a mission to combine yoga shapes with dynamic flows and explosive movements in order to create an all-encompassing practice. The goal is physical and emotional well-being that is more well-rounded than a daily yoga practice.
Breath and relaxation are also included, mainly in focus at the beginning and end. For now, I’ll call this #playfulmovement #movementculture #ayimethod #exploration #stepupyourgame #fitnessmotivation #movement #mindfulmovement #ulm #neuulm .

Many yoga practitioners feel that their daily practice is all they need. Many people blame Ashtanga Vinyasa for their injuries too. Here’s my two cents: -

Stretching and repetition are only as good as how you compliment them. If you only do what you like and what feels good you are playing the ignorance is bliss card, until you get injured and then it’s all about finding the root cause. While it may be tempting to blame a specific event, I.e. when the injury occurred, it’s unfortunately not going to bring you very far. The true root cause is a buildup of movement ignorance, of not inquiring further and waiting for the answer to unfold itself, and that probably led you to avoid like the plague any movements that you don’t like. -

How to avoid this movement ignorance?

1) Play around with the way you move. Modify shapes in different ways. Start on a different foot. Get on and off your bike on the other side. Find out where you cannot will a movement to happen and try to bring awareness there.
2) If you have time, I recommend all yogis to do some strength training, and if possible also some #hiitworkouts to balance things out. ***Since many people cannot practice 3 hours a day, I will keep on working in ways to add these elements to my lessons. -

If you’re curious, try some of my tried and true #flows next Monday @ashtangayoga.info in Ulm. This one above needs a bit more polishing. What do you think?

  • Parivrrta Parsvakonasana/ Revolved side angle pose: It is a standing posture coupled with deep spinal twist. It needs great flexibility, balance and core strength.

Benefits- Stretches the thorax, lungs, shoulders, abdomen, thighs, hips, increases blood circulation to spine and abdomen, builds stamina, improves balance, reduces lower back pain, etc.

I’ve been working on binding with a yoga strap in my 1/2 & all levels classes these past weeks. I’ll continue to walk you through the steps but remember: 1) it takes time, 2) baby steps, & 3) have fun with it!.
•
This pose is still a work in progress for me; but, I’ve always had trouble going into a full bind in Parivrtta Parsvakonasana (Revolved side angle). I could go into it pretty easily the other way, Parsvakonasana (binding facing away from the front leg), but not toward the leg.
•
I remember when I was able to actually clasp my hands behind my back in this pose. It took months, maybe years for me to actually fully get into this pose. Once you’re able to do what you couldn’t, it’s a great feeling. Even if you can’t, it’s knowing to accept and just keep trying. It’s ok if it comes...or if it doesn’t. Be present with where you’re at..

✨NEW CHALLENGE ANNOUNCEMENT✨ #GroundingGratitude from 13 to 22 Nov
.
.
Practicing grounding ourselves into gratitude is the best gift we could offer to ourselves. It is a gift because it helps us to focus on what is important which gives us peace of mind, and it trains our minds to live in the present moment, eventually making us feel happier and feel more grateful for the miracle of life alone. .
Good news is, gratitude can be cultivated by practice, and it does not take much. As we approach Thanksgiving, we would like to invite you to join us for a 10-day challenge to train ourselves to live each day grounding ourselves into gratitude and with an open mind, begin to see all of life's gift. For each post, let's try to ask ourselves - what are the things we are thankful for? .
