  • I posted this picture on my personal page, asking this question. Surprisingly enough, many people chose the option of encouraging her to sit. So the question is, standing while doing tabletop activities, yes or no? My answer.... YES!
On average, kids sit 4.5 hours a day just in the hours of school! Now let’s take in also hours spent at home, during screen time, dinner time, car rides etc... combine all that and kids are sitting approximately 85% of the day!!! 😳 😯
Many kids, especially with adhd, Focus better when standing. The brains actually function way better, how cool? It allows the student to be able to shift their bodies and change position when they need to stay focus. A lot of issues with attention in kids today is because there is limited play throughout the day, recess being cut down always, and they are expected to sit like a robot! As a therapist, I always encourage teachers to promote movement breaks and outdoor activities. So if your child wants to stand while doing homework, let them! And watch the difference. Research shows a huge increase in attention and productiveness with those that stand while working. According to a very knowledgeable colleague of mine who is an amazing psychologist, standing is a great way for those that need that extra boost in their attention but they should be encouraged to sit during meal time as this is part of social norms.
Does your child stand while doing their homework? If your child is struggling in school and you see that at home they focus better while standing and doing homework — speak to the school/teacher about accommodating their needs and having them stand in class as well.

Z is for Zones of Regulation.
•
Zones of Regulation is a program that helps children improve their self-regulation by improving their control of emotions and behaviors. The Zones help children identify what they are feeling and which zone they are in, track their zones throughout the day, and identify strategies to regulate their emotions and move to different zones.
•
It also teaches children that it is okay to be in every zone, and each zone is appropriate for different circumstances and environments. For example, it's appropriate to be tired (blue) before bed, focused (green) in the classroom, silly and wiggly (yellow) on the playground, and angry (red) during certain situations.
•
Are you familiar with the Zones of Regulation?
•

U - Unilateral Spatial Neglect
________________________
Unilateral Spatial Neglect is one of the most common symptoms of R CVA, however some with L CVA may experience this. It's defined as an impaired ability to attend, orient, or respond to stimuli presented to the opposite side of the brain lesion.
_________________________
If unilateral spatial neglect is present, you will see clients run into their surroundings, ignore food on one side of the plate, and attend to only one side of their body.
__________________________
Unilateral Spatial Neglect can impact functional mobility, self-feeding, hygiene/grooming, dressing, and other self-care and household tasks.
__________________________
Treatment options should work on using the affected UE during ADLs as much as possible and bringing awareness to it. Doing activities in front of a mirror helps with visual feedback if there are no other significant visual impairments. Proprioceptive input is also helpful with bringing awareness to affected side, when appropriate. Provide visual cues, like bright tape, to facilitate scanning to the affected side and promote visual scanning of the environment.

Q is for Quality of Life.
•
Quality of life is defined in the OT practice framework as a "Dynamic appraisal of life satisfaction (perception of progress towards identified goals), self-concept (beliefs and feelings about oneself), health and functioning (e.g., health status, self-care capabilities), and socioeconomic factors (vocation, education, income)."
•
Occupational therapists help clients improve their quality of life by improving self-concept, health, and functioning through the OT process. OT may also improve socioeconomic factors by suggesting workplace accommodations and creating adaptations for an individual to receive education.
•
As OTs, we strive to improve each client's quality of life through occupation.

  • “Long before I knew what occupational therapy was, I knew I wanted to work in mental health. I chose to become an occupational therapist because I wanted a career where I could work collaboratively with clients to meet their goals and reduce barriers to meaningful engagement. I have had the opportunity to work in several different settings and with different client populations at CAMH, and have learned so much from my clients along the way. I really value that at CAMH, I have been encouraged to think outside the box and have been given the opportunity to collaborate with CAMH’s wonderful community of OTs. One example of this is in the design and development of the horse stables and riding program for forensic clients. It has been so exciting to watch this program grow, and see clients learning new skills, increasing their self-confidence, and truly enjoying themselves. It has validated my decision many times over of choosing to work as an OT at CAMH."

  • Ever find it hard to wind down before bed? Are you tired, but your brain can’t seem to shut off?
.
Guided meditations are one strategy I’ve used to help quiet my body and mind before bed, and I love that there are so many of them freely available.
.
Whether using an app like @calm or @headspace or going on @youtube and searching “Guided Meditation”, there are no shortage of choices to play around with.
.
Two of my favourite YouTube guiders are @jasonstephensonmeditation and Michael Sealy.
.
Give it a try and let me know what you think!

I’ve learned that I like a position where I get to work with clients for a longer period of time and collaborate within an interdisciplinary team. I love my current role in the forensic program on Unit 3-2. There are so many varied ways to support clients in their recovery including building clients’ mastery over their illness and risk issues, and getting creative in overcoming environmental barriers and exploring and building meaningful activities for clients." “I recently supported a gentlemen to connect with the amazing Top Rail Stables Program. This program offered so much meaning for my client as he grew up on a farm. He signed up to attend the program every week, but he struggled with a lot of anxiety and almost backed out every week. He was able to develop skills to cope with his negative self-talk and anxiety and he thrived in the program. He stated that the chance to leave the city, breathe the fresh air and interact with the horses was fundamental to his feeling well. It was so rewarding for me to see him develop his confidence and validated my role in looking for meaning for my clients.”

I have never been more proud of myself. Along with finding a career that speaks to my heart and helps me feel whole, I have found my self confidence. This is a story of becoming, and it is only the beginning 🖤
  • Guess what this girl just did? Registered for GRADUATION 👩🏻‍🎓🎉

  • Happy Occupational Therapy Month! To my fellow OTs, COTAs, OTS...keep empowering and inspiring others to live their best life that is meaningful to them and helping them to accomplish their goals to be the best they can be. With any occupation or career, there are challenges (believe me I know especially this season for me) but at the end of the day just remember to be the best OT God created you to be! There will be doubts (I still have them after being an OT for almost 13 years 😬)but just remind yourself you have that professional background you went to school for and with every struggle & failure, there is always growth & lessons that come with it. I’m still learning every day and I have to thank my fellow OT colleagues and OT community who has helped me along the way! So go out there and be the best OT you can be because someone needs you! 💖

  • This summer is going to look pretty different than past summers ☀️ I’m excited and nervous!
.
I have one month left of coursework in the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program here in Saginaw, Michigan before I begin 6 months of fieldwork experiences out of state 🗺
.
I’m moving to Kinston, North Carolina to be at the Caswell Developmental Center (anybody out there live around there let’s be friends)
.
No, @shaneomara_dpt isn’t coming with me 😭 But can we celebrate him for a second? Because he is starting as clinic director of Active Orthopedic Physical Therapy’s Freeland location in about a month- you go boo 😍👏🏽
.
Since everyone always asks - why would I choose out of state fieldwork when my fiancé can’t come with me? WELL funny you ask. Partly because I secured my level II fieldwork back in Dec 17/ January 2018 long before we were even dating 😂
.
Summer 2019 WE are READY for you 🙌🏽

  • Patients often undergo major lifestyle changes to manage their health conditions. #Occupationaltherapy gives them the tools to succeed. Occupational therapists teach patients how to accomplish day-to-day activities, like achieving goals and going to school, in a way that accommodates illness.
In honor of Occupational Therapy Month, thank you to all occupational therapists! You help wish kids realize their dreams every day. #OTMonth
