  • “Since I was a child, I was hell bent on being an achiever – topper, head girl, getting into a good college, bagging a fancy job, earning, travelling & looking ‘good’. So by 25, I thought I’d checked all the boxes. I was editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed India, I was dating a kind, smart man, I lived alone & I was financially independent.
More than anything, I was holding the reins to an amazing medium & that was supposed to be great – I was supposed to love it. And at the time, I thought I did. Privilege was on my side. But something didn’t feel right. I’d set my life up as it was supposed to be, but my mental health was quietly protesting.
It had come to a point where I’d wake up at night & cry for hours. I couldn’t be alone – if I was by myself, I’d feel anxious. I lashed out at friends & I’d have negative feelings. I was envious of strangers on Instagram! Even getting out of bed was a challenge. I needed this to stop.
So, I began therapy. It took a year, but I realised that I was associating my identity to my achievements – that was my biggest mistake. I decided to change. I began saving & once I was ready, I quit my job. It was hard, but it was the best thing for me.
It’s been 10 months since & I feel like a new person. I’m building a life that I like – I’m doing work that nourishes & pays me. I’m learning solitude & vulnerability. These aren’t impressive achievements, but they’re my favorite yet! It may not lead to promotions & a marriage by 28, but that’s okay. I don’t want an ‘ideal’ anything. I just want to be happy!
You know, as children we’re given a script to follow till we die. Have a conventionally hot body, a fairytale romance, earn a lot. We get so engrossed in the ‘act’ that we forget to find our own identity. I’m lucky to have realised that I didn’t want to act anymore. Because now I know, the world isn’t a stage & joy isn’t something you perform. It’s knowing who you are when nobody's looking.”

The city that gave me much love, both within and without. The city that gave me love not only from within herself, but also from around the world. The city where I spent some years in my early twenties. The city that I went back to for the first time in nine years earlier in 2019 for a roadshow as part of my book tour organized by HarperCollins. The city that brought back the #fragrance of monsoon and the flavor of wholesome adrak #chai from a street chai wala outside Kamala Mills Compound - during my afternoon breaks with colleagues at KPMG a decade ago. 🌋

Much of my experience of Mumbai and of working at KPMG here, back then, has inspired certain crucial scenes that guide the plot of my next #novel, Twin Flame. And those were the very same scenes I was editing earlier today on the heels of some good news from a legendary literary figure in New York (More on that, later!) But... those memories, from my time in Mumbai in the late 2000s, resurfaced nevertheless. Memories of love and deepening riendships and the sea and the dreams and writing and my lovely landlord back there and so much more. 🏞

This picture, as taken in Jan. 2019 in Mumbai's Bandra West, where I'm seen trying on a black top while street shopping during a break from my Victims For Sale roadshow. 💃

  • Mumbai diaries ❤❤
Amazing experience. Gave me so many perspectives on life. The clear distinction between rich and poor, traveling in a crowded Mumbai local train, pav bhaji, weather, old buidings and most importantly the people. The slums and the narrow lanes, tents with AC - as it is a necessity than a luxioury, the fast phase of the city and crowded places everywhere is note worthy mentions.
