  • It was mostly the mountains that brought me to Antarctica for work 11 years ago. But this icy continent is surrounded by a vibrant, sea-ice covered coastline teeming with life and I was thrilled to have opportunities to work on sea ice during those first few years. I thought those years were mostly behind me because the mountain guide skill set tends to be most compatible with geologists and geophysicists who tend to like dry, rocky, inland places with no risk of drowning! .
.
After a 2 year hiatus I’m happy to be going back again; both to the mountains and to the sea ice, and I’m looking forward to seeing the group I’m working with get lots of cool stuff done! .
.
.
1) Leopard seal (popped her head up out of a hole in the ice nearby, checked us out for a bit, and, perhaps disappointed that we weren’t penguins, dove back down...
2) Emperor Penguin in the midnight sun, huffing and puffing its way back to the colony with a belly full of krill, during an old #BBC project.
3) Weddell Seal coming up for a breath of fresh air in Mcmurdo Sound, 2m off the side of the sea ice road.
4) @1karenhilton in the wild, near turtle rock, 10 years ago!
5) sea ice crack.... they’re like really wet crevasses... .

  • Vince's Cross was placed at the end of Hut Point to acknowledge the death of George Vince of the Discovery expedition. It is just a short fifteen minute walk from McMurdo Station through the freezing cold and chilling wind. Standing here on the edge of Ross Island you cannot yet see the inevitable break up of the sea ice.

  • This is my Dad in Vietnam. A US Navy Seabee... Young, hilarious and handsome... he’s exactly the same today except he suffers from chronic depression, PTSD and metastatic renal cell carcinoma. All products of those 26 years of service.

This year my PSA is to @deptvetaffairs and @usnavy ....my Dad gave 26 years of his life to his country... two tours in Vietnam, a tour at the South Pole that didn’t allow him to be home for the first 2 years of my life and serving presidents and special dignitaries at Camp David.
You’re failing him...your healthcare system is failing him...your mental health system is failing him. You refuse him disability for a disease created by agent orange and asbestos while he served his county. Now he fights for his life without the support and resources he deserves and has EARNED.

So today, I celebrate my Dad and all US Veterans who protected their country and believed that their country would protect them after their service ended, when the damages of that service became evident.
Our Veterans and their families should want for nothing. They should get any and all medical, dental and psychological treatment they need and want. It’s the least we can do considering an average of 20 Veterans take their lives EVERY DAY in this country and countless succumb to diseases created by exposure to chemicals while serving.

My hope for all Veterans is that we do better... that they become a priority... that they get everything they deserve... that they stop dying because a system sees them as a number instead of the amazing, generous and self-sacrificing people they are.
Happy #VeteransDay Pop... I see you. I always have. I got you. You got this.♥️

  • When we walked off the plane I was struck with an endless landscape of white. It was intense, everyone poured out of the plane in thier red jackets. We walked towards the buses and I saw the most famous bus on the continent: Ivan the Terra Bus. "Five more seats" someone yelled.
I sped up my pace and climbed the stairs. With our large jackets it was like giant marshmallows sqeezing into each row. I found a spot and we headed towards the camp.

Spares Marine's success in World Wide Web land does it again and our super swift couriers prove it's not such a "long way to Tipperary" after all!

  • Hut Point, Antarctica. (And a beautiful, smiley Weddell Seal). :) .
I went hiking up to this spot called Hut Point near Discovery Hut where the Scott expedition happened in 1901-1904. When you make it there, you can find many seals laying on the sea ice preparing to give birth to their seal pups. They come popping up from the sea ice, and galumph (the scientific name for seal movement on land) their way to a comfortable spot. Because they don't have that many predators, they are free to lay out on the ice without a worry in the world. They weigh about 1000 pounds, and the variety of sounds they can make are incredible! I love them.

  • In early October I had my first chance to get down to the ice via plane. The most incredible part was to have the rare opporunity to fly via a 757, which means windows! Rather than the stuffy C-17 we got to look out at the continent. Early on all we saw were clouds. Then suddenly all of Victorialand expanded below us. mountains no one has climbed and patches of the Earth no man has stepped on.

  • Scott Base Station, Antarctica
.
Pictured are the pressure ridges of Scott Base. I had the opportunity to walk along these ridges the other day in a near white-out
to see the ice cracks and formations. I have dreamt of seeing ice formations like this since I was a kid :’)
.
Also! I am officially writing for the United States Antarctic Program’s newspaper! It’s called the Antarctic Sun.
And my first article was just published :) It covers all that has happened this past month at McMurdo Station (where I am working).
If you would like to read it, I put it in the link in my bio!

  • "Control, control, J-71..."
Re-plumbed the whole swamp and ran a transfer through the pumps. It was close to zero for the windchill, everything was gray. Then, the last five minutes there was some nice light. There's a reason why I have a lot of mic photos. I'm working, and these are one of the pauses I have to try and make a few frames.

Hey, guess what?! I figured out a way to share some of my adventures here in Antarctica on IG from my computer! Like this beautiful shot from my adventure out onto the Pressure Ridges near Scott Base with the other Pressure Ridge Volunteer Leaders. I'll see if I can throw up some more updates eventually, including some of my drawings from Inktober and fun Antarctica themed sketches of penguins and seals.

  • Diving under a glacier to film the opening scenes of divers underneath ice for BBC Seven Worlds. For that dramatic wide shot shot we had to swim about 200m away from our exit point - a fair distance when lugging all the kit and without any other point of escape. This location was where the ocean had eroded a large, recessed cavern into the bottom of glacier, and broken sea ice had become trapped and wedged under it. All the immense ice cover made it a very dark and foreboding place, but immensely dramatic. This is my favourite dive site on the planet, and I'm happy we got to share it all with you last week.

  • Exploring the underwater ice caves of Antarctica near McMurdo Station Antarctica. @hughdmiller and I spent an entire week working this dive site which we affectionately dubbed our ice coffin. It was hard to access and involved trying to wedge ourselves (and 200 pounds of lighting and filming gear) through a narrow 1 meter opening. Once inside the cave we had long swims to get to where we wanted to film, and consumed most of our air just setting up lights and getting the camera framed up. 3 hours of diving a day might lead to only a few minutes of footage.
On one memorable dive my battery-heated thermal undersuit caught fire while we were in the cave, and melted through 2 layers of insulation and left some gnarly burns across my stomach. I knew something was very wrong, but we still had to make our exit carefully and cautiously. It definitely felt like one of the longest swims back to the dive hut. Definitely one of my favourite places on earth.

  • An ice cave on Mt. Erebus, Antarctica, where steam escapes from cracks in underlying volcanic rock, melting out chambers in overlying ice. As warm moist air condenses, it forms ice crystals which grow on cave walls in strange forms. On the right is volcanologist Alexander Gerst, inspecting volcanic ash which coats the walls of the largest room. Caves like these are considered good analogs for the kinds of environments which could harbor life on other planets, such as Mars. In 2018, Alex was commander of the International Space Station, and has logged 362 days in space, the most of any ESA astronaut. #NSF #USAP #McMurdo #Ereubs

Let’s do all we can to protect and cherish all of the extraordinary life forms in this life-changing natural resource. (I snapped this photo from one of our Penguin Ranch dive holes under a hut. Let’s do all we can to protect and cherish all of the extraordinary life forms in this life-changing natural resource. (I snapped this photo from one of our Penguin Ranch dive holes under a hut. • It’s 12:00 am in the harshest place on earth. I am standing on a frozen flight line over an Antarctic Ocean. About to fly in the most versatile aircraft to the South Pole where we will medevac out our pt. Once I step off the plane I will be greeted with a -60° windchill and 10000 ft altitude adjustment. #operationdeepfreeze

  • Poignant relic from a violent storm; Aurora’s anchor still embedded in sand at Cape Evans. Ten men from the Ross Sea Party were stranded here in May 1915, when the ship broke its moorings unable to return. Shackleton arrived in Jan 1917 to rescue the men, three had perished.

  • The official trailer is finally out for the series I worked on for several years: BBC's Seven Worlds, One Planet. Marine invertebrates are my favourite group of animals on the planet, and it was great to see our shoot from McMurdo, Antarctica highlighted. It takes a certain amount of crazy to love doing 3 long dives a day in -2°C water for weeks on end to pull something like this off. Big props to cameramen @hughdmiller and @espenrekdalphotography for capturing stunning behaviour of these beautiful creatures, and to the legendary USAP dive team led by Rob Robbins and Steve Rupp @webgoalie that kept us running. Couldn't have asked for better company for an intense and frozen shoot, thanks guys. The show airs on BBC in late October and in the meantime the trailer is available here: ( https://youtu.be/IlFRPkT-hVc ).
