  • Sharing a recent post from Howlong Rsl. Charlie presented there last night.
--------------------------
Charlie Lynn served in the Australian Army for 21 years. He is a Vietnam Veteran, a qualified military free-fall parachutist and a graduate of the Army Command and Staff College.

After leaving the Army Charlie organised the annual Westfield Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon, made famous by a 61 year old potato farmer, Cliff Young and ran outback survival programs for mining companies in remote areas of the Kimberley region.

Over the past 28 years he has led 99 treks across the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea, which means he has trekked a total of 11,880 kilometres with an aggregated climb of more than 600,000 metres.

Charlie was elected to the NSW Parliament in 1995 and served as the Parliamentary Secretary for Veterans Affairs under Premiers' Barry O'Farrell and Mike Baird. He retired in 2015 after almost 20 years service in the Legislative Council.

In 2015 Charlie was inducted as an Officer of the Logohu by the PNG Government in their New Years Honours List "for service to the bilateral relations between Papua New Guinea and Australia and especially in the development of the Kokoda Trail and its honoured place in the history of both nations over the past 25 years". Charlie was also inducted as a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen's Birthday Honours and Awards list for his services to the Parliament of NSW.

  • Berlin day 2
A very very long walking tour with a huge amount of sights! Left 09.00, first meal and first time I sat was 18.15!

Mixed day.
On the enjoyable, on the way to the tour stumbled over the Victory Column which was beautiful, then on the tour saw the lovely Museum Island, worlds largest chocolate shop (Rausch) and the beautiful Brandenburg Gate. Then, of course, Christmas markets and beer (litre of).
On the not so nice, saw 2 eras of oppression and atrocities. From the nazis with the site of the university book burning; one of the only remaining third reich buildings remaining; where Hitlers bunker was (ironically now a nondescript parking lot) and the haunting Memorial to the Murdered Jews. Then onto the Soviet separation of Berlin, with a section of the wall and checkpoint charlie ... And I did NOT eat enough today. Only 1 proper meal for supper!

  • The former KGB HQ in Riga; over 60 years thousands of Latvians and other USSR citizens were tortured, interrogated and killed here. It was also used by the Gestapo during the Nazi occupation. It was one of those places where there is a chill in the air, you can feel the evil things that happened over so many years. Particularly sobering was the last room, where political prisoners/ dissidents were shot in a room lined with wood and later leather padding, vans were kept running to further disguise the noise. Awful, terrible place.. But I'm glad I went #lestweforget

  • Dec 7th 1941. A date which will live in infamy.

A lot of technological advances were developed during WWII, including perfecting the use of radio waves for radar, which allowed us to detect approaching enemy aircraft (to help prevent future attacks like this one on Pearl Harbor).

Radio waves, aka radio frequency, are now a part of our everyday lives, used for everything from wifi to cell phones. It is also used in our skin tightening devices, which use bipolar radio frequency.

  • Today we mourn Australian PTE Luke Worsley, who lost his life on 23 November 2007 in an attack against Taliban leaders and their supporters in Oruzgan Province, Afghanistan. Luke, 26, had deployed with Bravo Commando Company Group and was serving with Special Operations Task Group
"Luke was the first man of the team through the door and was met by enemy forces that opened fire at close range, resulting in Luke being killed almost instantly," 4RAR commanding officer LTCOL Mark Smethurst said at the time. "Luke's actions upon entering the room, warning of the enemy threat, almost certainly saved the lives of other members of his team."
You are in our thoughts, Luke. May you rest in peace.

  • Via @defencexp - #lestweforget : Remembering Brave Major Arvind Bazala who was serving with  659 Army Aviation Squadron based in West Bengal. The unit was based in Sukna military base about 10 kms from Siliguri in Darjeeling district of West Bengal. On 30 Nov 2016, Maj Sanjeev Lathar along with his co-pilot Maj Arvind Bazala was tasked for an operational  mission along the eastern border. The missions undertaken by 659 Army Aviation Sqn usually included the information gathering by recce and observation of critical border areas for analysis by the Trishakti Corps HQs based at Sukna military base.
Maj Bazala took off for the mission as planned in the Cheetah helicopter. The Cheetah is a single-engine helicopter , of 1970s vintage and derived from the French Alouette. The mission was uneventful for the most part but when the helicopter was nearing to the base, it developed a technical snag. The engine malfunctioned at about 100 Ft from the ground and the aircraft lost control with the ATC. The helicopter crashed and Maj Sanjeev Lathar and the co-pilot Maj Arvind Bazala got severely injured, who later succumbed to their injuries. Major Arvind Bazala was an ace pilot and a committed soldier who laid down his life in the service of the nation....🇮🇳❤️🇮🇳
