  • This is wrong. This administration wants to ignore the Flores Agreement. It’s a violation of human rights.

Imagine being detained (imprisoned) indefinitely after fleeing violence.

The Trump administration announced plans to roll out a new policy that would lift the limit on how long it can detain undocumented children and their families. Instead of 20 days, they may now be detained for an INDEFINITE amount of time in the camps. The new rule seeks to undermine a previous judicial ruling, the Flores Agreement. We will not be silent while this administration attempts to thwart the law. Take action or help organize a protest and help us #CloseTheCamps!! • The news is too much to bear without actionable steps. Please add to this list. Here are a few things we can do to address this mess:
1) The #AmazonRainforest has been intentionally burning for 3 weeks due to #Bolsonaro’s corruption and his goal to illegally deforest indigenous land for cattle ranching. BE LOUD about this. The Amazon Rainforest supplies 20% of our oxygen and home to 30% of all species. Follow and support @sunrisemvmt and #greennewdeal. #prayforamazonas
2) The Trump Administration launched a plan today the effectively ends the #FloresAgreement and allows the government to detail children and families INDEFINITELY. This is racist, inhuman and xenophobic. Follow and support @fams2gether @unitedwedream @raicestexas @alotrolado_org @instabaji @undocublack All of these orgs need your support and are pushing out actions that you can join regularly. #familiesbelongtogether #closethecamps
3) For the first time in 50 years, @plannedparenthood is being forced out of the Title X program for affordable birth control. This is an attack on young people, people of color and low income people who get their health care through Title X. This move also bullies health care providers into withholding abortion information from their patients. #protectX: call your senator and tell them to protect affordable birth control and reproductive health care. 202-601-3441 (link in stories for script). #istandwithpp
4) Yesterday Trump said that Jews who support democrats are “disloyal”, this harkens back to hateful rhetoric that Hitler used when he said “The Jews are not loyal to the state”. Jews and allies are posting affirmatively that they are #disloyaltotrump. You can too! Also, support @never_again_action as well as #jewsagainstwhitenationalism (link in stories to sign up). #neveragainisnow
5) Yesterday, after 5 long years, #ericgarner’s killer, #pantaleo, was finally fired. This is just the beginning. Follow and support @nyjusticeleague for actions and updates.
6) Follow & Support @runforsomethingnow, @fairfightaction & @swingleft to flip the senate, fight voter suppression & elect progressives in down ballot races. #stayhuman #keepshowingup

I’m thinking a lot about the relationship between activism and healing. Activism (broadly, from living publicly to formal organizing and direct action) has been an aspect of my healing as well as the exact opposite. Activism and healing both address the traumas we’ve experienced.

It can feel like a catch 22: how can we heal until the violence stops, but how can we fight it before we’ve healed? But I’m moving away from that conundrum. I’m letting myself heal, and only taking action that supports that healing.

Sometimes it feels selfish or short sighted to quiet the urgency that we must make things better and safer and make it happen now. And then I remind myself the following:

1. I can trust those who have come before me, who have found some healing, who are doing the work they can
2. It’s not an issue of effort or personal morality (whether I did all I could), but of real goals: to change the world and heal. My healing is part of that new world. My healing is part of the activism.
3. I run high risks of being ineffective or causing harm if I lead from a place of unhealed trauma (@aprilharterlcsw writes on this idea).
4. Ideas of high energy, high conflict activism as the only way are ableist.
5. I show up and help out as I can without harming myself.

I wanted to share these ideas and hope you’ll share your thoughts below. Your ideas on non-toxic activism and advocacy on previous posts have helped me so much!

  • This reads like some kind of twisted Onion headline, but no this is real life.
Remember the viral video of Sarah Fabian, the DOJ lawyer who argued that migrant children in detention didn’t need soap, toothbrushes or showers? Today a federal appeals court panel ruled that actually, yeah, children do need those things to ensure sanitary conditions despite the Trump Administration’s effort to say they don’t. This is where we’re at. Literally fighting for a child’s right to soap.
Never did we think we’d wake up in a world where denying children basic hygiene supplies would be up for debate.

Is America great yet?

This picture makes me weep. ⁣
⁣
@vasfsf @rrael and a team of visionary architects and artists constructed a series of teeter totters that could be passed through the US/Mexico border wall so children could play with each other across the divide. ⁣
⁣
The undeniable reality of human connection and equality, flying in the face of artificial walls and imaginary borders that divide and otherize. ⁣
⁣
And also a metaphor for the brink at which humanity finds itself — teetering between achieving more justice and equality and connection; or falling further towards hate. ⁣

Thank you to all involved in this powerful project. ⁣
