  • The Upper School American Studies class visited Washington, D.C. today. They visited the Harlem Renaissance-inspired restaurant and bookstore called Busboys and Poets and then engaged in a scavenger hunt in the National Portrait Gallery for art pieces related to their coursework. Junior Emily Tyler stopped for a quick photo with her great, great grandfather, President John Tyler. #instasaints #girlsschool #americanstudiesclass #busboysandpoets #nationalportraitgallery

  • I think a lot about what it means for me to be a migrant living in Washington DC. A way for me to navigate this is through learning about the city’s history, culture and people. Today, I was invited to live paint as a part of @busboysandpoets first open mic in Anacostia.
Washington DC used to be Chocolate City, a predomninantly African-American city with a rich history of culture and arts. Gentrification has significantly changed the life and culture in the city, with the harms being felt mainly by DC natives - as condos are being built, folks were displaced from their own home and pushed out of their city. Right now, ward 5, 7 and 8 are among the most affected communities in DC with the highest rates of poverty. This piece explored what it would look like if the city, instead of investing on corporate development, funded education and the arts, specifically in ward 8; and what it would look like in South East DC if there were more resources, the school to prison pipeline ended, and youth could thrive in their city, with their community through culture and the arts.
This piece was donated to @spitdatdc - the legendary DC open mic hosted by @crochetkingpin and @droopythebrokeballer - follow and check these folks out (if you’re a writer in DC and you don’t know Spit Dat... hmmmmm). Deeply grateful for another night full of great vibes, energy and people. Y’all give me so much life - I can’t even express it.

  • Not my normal, mushy gushy couples photos, but something a bit different and a bit more important. This weekend I had the pleasure of meeting Ken, an incredibly warm and welcoming person. He graciously showed me around D.C. for the afternoon and told me a bit of his story. Unfortunately, part of that story is his current battle with brain cancer. Getting the opportunity to meet Ken and see him with his friends was a huge reminder that we should never ever take time and love and friendship for granted. Hug your friends, tell your loved ones how you feel, do things that make you truly happy. Do all of it now. Life’s just way too valuable to let it ever go to waste. Okay, I’ll get off my soap box now but first here is the first picture I got of Ken on a chilly Saturday morning.
