  • Happy #FossilFriday everyone! 🤠🦴⛏
Anybody up for some #seafood? Today we’re landing this beautifully preserved #Lepidotes! Lepidotes was a large ray-finned #fish from #Jurassic #Europe and Early #Cretaceous #Brazil. One of the most distinct features of this particular fossil are all those enabled #scales. These would have helped protect the fish from all sorts of larger predators and acted almost like fishy #chainmail. Its teeth are another oddity. As opposed to typical mammal teeth we’re used to, Lepidotes had a mouth filled with short, peg-like teeth. Back in medieval times, fossil Lepidotes teeth were often found and called “toadstones”. They were thought to form in the heads of frogs and toads and cute poisoning. While they absolutely didn’t do that, they were perfect for crushing hard-shelled prey. They weee apparently really good at it too! These guys were found in both fresh AND salt waters! Maybe part of their success is in their novel jaw anatomy. These were some of the first fish to have a more loosely attached upper jaw. This allowed their entire mouth to slingshot forward when opening, creating a suction force to bring prey into those crushing jaws! We can actually see this rather often in modern fish like #carp and #bass.

  • Bass tecc

long af but read to learn how to make less awful growls and to never need a bass sample pack again.
Used to struggle with formanty growls, but it's super easy. Start with any dry bass patch with good mid content in a good synth (even a saw will still be gnarly) and automate the level in a growl shape. Getting the vowel sound is pretty much as easy as resonant high pass filters, automate the cutoff with the same control as the level. Apply this to any inbuilt filters using simple highpasses with resonance, I also used two peaks with opposing gain crossing over eachother to build movement in this patch. Put the same control on the frequency of a static flanger and add a chorus to sauce it up.

Won't sound quite right yet, but the rest of the process is literally distorting and compressing it more than you thought was allowed in polite society. In this chain I have stacked at least 5 different distortion patches and 4 compressors on the effects, don't be scared to put two massive under/over ott compressors directly next to eachother, they actually saturate and add new content to the sound at those levels. Try re-arranging the chain to put different effects before and after your distortion/compression. If you lose the movement from your macro in the mess, just apply it to another filter or some volume automation set after your current place in the chain. Automate the pitch up an octave then back down again over a couple measures and slap it next to your macro automation. Done 🔥

And cut out the sub ffs
